GEORGIA PARKER CLUB
A number of the leading Demo
crats of the state met in Atlanta
last Saturday and organized the
Parker Democratic Club of Geor-
gia. The body is composed of
some of the most conservative and
influential members of the part)
and shows that the Parker move
ment—at least in this state—has
not been all talk. It seems to be
the conviction of the party leaders
throughout the country that Judge
Farker is the most available man
to be nominated and clubs are be
ing formed everywhere for the
purpose of strenthening and fur
thering his cause.
The club organized in Atlanta
Saturday gives every promise of
success. Besides the large num-
ber present, there were letters and
telegrams from as many more
prominent Democrats, promising
support and giving encouragement.
Both of the state senators and the
entire democratic delegation—
with perhaps one exception—have
assured the club of their hearty
and active co operation:
The chief object of this club is
to "protect the state against rad'
cal political action and the send
ing of a delegation to St. Louis
that might cast the vote of the
state for an impossible candidate;
in short it is to organize and fight
for the nomination of Judge Alton
B. Parker as the next bearer of
the national democratic banner,”
and incidentally to put a quietus
on the Hcarst movement.
Hon. A. L. Miller of Macon was
elected president,and Thomas W.
Loyless of Augusta secretary of
the club. Hon. T. B. Felder Jr.
was elected chairman of the exe
cutive committee. Besides these
there were appointed six vice pres
idents from each congressional
district and 22 vice presidents
from the state at large. The exe
cutivc committee is composed of
two members from each congres
sional district.
Hon. Albert II. Russell was ap-
P'mted one of the members of the
executive committee from the sec
ond distriot. Among the vice
presidents from this district were
Hon. J, M. Brown of Bainbridge,
Gapt. Triplett of Thomasville,
Hon, D. H. Pope of Albany, Hon.
J. L. Hand of Pelham and others.
It does seem that the experience
with such talking machines as
Roosevelt and Bryant would teach
people to appreciate the so-called
reticence of Judge Parker.
Dowie csntinues to do the sen
sational in Australia. He is not
very popular in those parts and
the American consul has been re
quested to gently persuade the
prophet 1 to leave.
The most important news from
the bar East is that the reporters
have been ordered to the rear.
Perhaps the public will now have
a rest ^ rom the latest war fiction
while the editors fill the vacuum
with political spiels. Which is
the lesser of these two evils ?

A MODERN CARPETBAGGER.
The house committee which has
been investigating Jthe charges
against Judge Swayne, of Florida,
recommends that he be impeached
of high misdemeanor.
The committee discussed each
charge separately and upon con
cluding their investigations decid
ed that “Judge Swayne has for
feited the respect and confidence
of the bar of his court, and of the
people of his district, "and accord
ing to the evidence against him
should be punished.
The case of Judge Swayne has
created much interest throughout
Fie country. By his tyrranical use
of his power and his utter disre*
gard of the law, Judge Swayne
won the hatred of the entire sec
tion under his jurisdiction; and
since the facts have been made
known, the contempt, of every
fair minded man. His abuse of
the rights with which he was
vested by reason of his office, re
mind us of the days just after the
war when the carpet bagger reign
ed supreme.
Aside from the personal conduct
or misconduct of Judge Swayne
during his term of office,
the case is unusual, because of the
fact, that according to an act of
congress Judge Swayne was not
eligible for the position to which
he was appointed. According to
law he should have resided in the
district over which he has juris
diction, for a certain period at
least, whereas by his own state
ment he had not only never resid-
in the northern district of Florida,
but furthermore he was not a reg
istered voter nor had he ever paid
any taxes in Florida. A remarka
ble state of affairs and we can
only wonder how such conditions
have existed so long as they have.
Judge Swayne was appointed in
1889 but his appointment was not
confirmed until 1890. And since
that time, this man with no legal
right to the office which he has
disgraced, has been allowed to
abuse his power and the people
under his charge. Judge Swayne
is a northerner which makes the
case doubly interesting.
It is said that an impeachment
rarely results in a conviction in a
trial before the senate, The rec
ords show that the "court for the
trial of impeachments” has only
been convened seven times, and in
but two cases did the trial result
in a conviction.
Because of the peculiar circum
stances surrounding this case, it
will be watched by the entire pub
with great interest and it is to be
hoped that this trial will be one
added to the few which have
suited in conviction.
Coaceraiaf Coloael Obear.
The report that Col. Obear
while inspecting the Baldwin
Blues at Milledgeville, was hissed
by the company, seems to have
been without foundation. The
papers published an account of
the reported trouble last week in
which it was stated that the com
pany was angered by remarks
made by Col. Obear; the lieuten
ant in charge resigned and the
crowd after disbanding hissed the
inspector general.
The truth of the matter so it is
said, is that the lieutenant had
failed to comply with the orders of
the inspector general, therefore
was requested to resign, which he
did. As Major French and Col.
Obear were returning to the hotel,
some college boys on the corner
cried, “’Rah for Obear” and this
is probably how the story of the
hissing originated.
Colonel Obear is much admired
in this city and has a number of
friends who will be glad to know
the true version, of the story.
Pat on a Bobtail Flush.
John Sharp Williams, the Dem
ocratic leader in the house, the
other day sounded the keynote for
the coming campaign. His speech
was directed at the “stand pat”
policy of the Republicans.
“What are they standing pat
on?” he asked.
“A straight flush,” shouted Mr.
Warnock of Ohio.
"It’s a bobtail,” declared Mr
Williams. “You’ll find that the
people are not as flush as they
were.”
Mr. Williams asked if the Re
publicans were going to stand pat
on the currency question, on the
trust question, on the postoffice
investigation, on the public land
business and on the ship subsidy.

No Primary in Steyart County.
Lumpkin, Ga., March 27.—The

a primary for county officers, and

They met two weeks ago, and
after arguing and discussing the

Moultrie's Bovine Quern.
The cow is queen in Moultrie.
By a vote of 210 to 68 she has
been of that Georgia town. The
votes have turned the place over
to the bovine species. The tink
ling cow bell will be heard at large
and the plaintive appeal of the sor
rowing calf will bring responsive
echoes from the rambling mother.
For years she has been deprived

from fondly and carefully nursed
