Good Koads Indorsement.
Editor Search Light;
At last we have had a Grand
Jury to recommend a system of
better roads for Decatur County.
I wish to congratulate the mem
bers of that jury because when
they recommended good roads they
took one step towards progress and
prosperity.
Now that the ball is in motion
let us keep it rolling. Money and
plenty ot it will be required to
make good roads in Decatur coun
ty. 1 would suggest that a tax of
one dollar a year be placed on all
men subject to road duty and that
the balance needed per year be
taken from the coi.,..y tax to be
set aside by the County Comtiiis-
sioneis. In this way those who
get the most benefit will contri
bute equa'ly and not leel the bur-
den. The railroad companies and
other corporations would share
their proportion of the expenses.
Your good roads article in last
weeks Search Light, Mr. Editor,
meets with my hearty approval and
I do hope that our county will
move forward and nut stop until
there is a system of good roads
throughout the whole county.

The special committee appointed
under a resolution at the last term
of the legislature, to examine all
the books and state departments
at Atlanta are hard at work. 1 Ion.
Joe Hill Hill from the “Stat^ of
Hibb,” chairman of committee and
author of the resolution is in
charge. This should insure a
thorough ai d searching investiga
tion. It is not the idea of the
legislature that any mal-adminis-
tration lias been practiced by the
state departments, yet tor the pub
lie safety and as a matter of
precedent the legislature thought
it best to pass this resolution.
The Journal devoted several col
umns of the Sunday edition to
telling the people just what the
new Si,500,ooo depot means to
Atlanta. The information w a s
unnecessary to any one who has
visi' I that city in the last few
decades.
Hainbridge lays claim to pros'
pects lor a new freight and passen
ger depot.—Times Enterprise.
Not merely prospects, Editor
McCartney. It is an assured fact
that Hainbridge will have not one,
but two handsome new freight and
passenger depots, in a short
while.

teaching his son's Sunday School
class how he achieved success. If
these young Americans profit by
the lesson, this country will doubt

d he theory of the negro bishop
Turner does not seem to simplify
or solve the “race problem.” It
is now a qjestion of the bleached
and unbleached—merely,a inoie
euphonious (?) name for whites and
blacks.
The Pope says there must be no
more female voices in church
choirs. We suspect that his holi-
ness has been reading in his myth
ology of the experience LHysses
had on one occasion with the
Sirens.
Nancy Hanks, the famous mare
that at one time held the world’s
record was sold this week to J. M.
Johnson, of Calais, Me., for the
sum of $q,ooo
Government Aid for Carrabelle Harbor.
Now that the G. F. & A. has a
gulf port terminus at Carrabelle it
will be a very desirable thing for
the road and for the patrons of the
road to have adequate connections
witb ocean transportation lines.
The officers of the road have ex
pressed themselves and will take
steps looking to this end. They
can’t do all that is necessary to be
done however without government
aid. This the people should,
through their representatives in
congress assist in procuring.
The harbor at Carrabelle is said
to be one of the finest on the gulf,
equally as good as the Pensacola
harbor, which is known to be one
of the best in the world. The
depth of water in the harbor will
j he sufficient with a little dredging
to allow seagoing vessels to ap
proach the railway docks and dis
charge and take on their cargoes
directly into and trom freight cars.
A great deal of money has al
ready been spent by the govern
ment in deepening the channel at
Apalachicola without apparent
good results. The last congress
appropriated an additional sum for
the work there. Now that Carra-
belle has been opened up and its
importance as a port has been
vastly increased by the entrance
of the G. F. & A. railroad it is en
titled to government recognition
and aid. One fourth of the money
that has been appropriated to the
Apalachicola river .improvement
will put the Carrabelle harbor in
splendid condition. It will also
require very little money to main
tain it as there is no, large river
emptying in and constantly filling
the channel with its sediment.
That this improvement will be
of vast benefit to the towns and
territory tributary may be seen at
a glance. Goods and supplies may
be brought direct to Carrabelle
from New York, New Orleans and
elsewhere and distiibuted thence
over ihe G. F. & A. as soon as un
loaded from the vessel. Hainbridge
will realize a wonderful reduction
in freight rates and this advantage
will accelerate her growth as noth
ing else can. There is already a
desultory line of steamers plying
between Mobile and Carrabelle.
New Orleans will be one. of the
first to realize the opportunity to
extend her trade into an easily ac
cessible territory. With ’high
freight rates eliminated New Or
leans will be the cheapest and best
market for most of our supplies.
The government is spending
millions of dollars every year on
river and harbor improvement.
Let them give just a little to Car-
abelle and soon, within less than
a hundred miles of us, we will have
a harbor that cannot be excelled
anywhere, and Rainbiidge will
have a commercial importance
second to no city in this section.
Let us back up the G. F. & A.
and help secure the improvements
its officers will shortly seek.
