Miss Luoy Carter entertained a few of
her friends Friday evening last with an
art party. Mr. James Stimson won the
prize for the best drawing; some of the
piotures were very comical and pleasing,
especially the one which was drawn by
Paul Trulook. Miss Carter is unusually
agreeable as a hoste-s, understanding
that ail important art of entertaining to
perfection, and a. she is one of the most
lovely young ladies in town, her guests
have the best of times.

Slow Bat Sure.
It will be remembered that last
year when the negro murderer,
Bill Granc, was arrested and lodg-
ed in jail in this city a riot almost
occurred and the local rfiilitary
company was called out to guard
tne jail and to protect the negro
from the mob which collected to
lynch him. Company I guarded
the jail a portion of one day and
one. entire night, thus defeating
the intentions of those who wished
to forestall justice.
It seems that military law pro
vides that such service should
receive extra pay. This happened
about a year ago. During the first
of this week the money due these
soldiers was forwarded to an offi
cer of this city and distributed
among the men. The sums were
small, ranging from $i to £$. It
is probable that tne military com
pany had forgotten both the oc
currence and the money due, but
/'it. was better late than never”

Cettoa Opening.
Mr. Mid Powell brought os in a
flue sample of early ootton last
week. The sulk contained four
open bolls of fleecy white ootton.
Mr. Powell raised the cotton on hit
fine planution jost out of town end
expects to make an unusually large
crop this season.
Ii is very evident that the boll
weevil has not reaohed South Geor
gia yet, or at least not this section,
tor the sample on onr table u free
from blemish, as perfect a aample of
the snowy staple aa can be found
anywhere.
Dastardly Murder in Thomas.
Early Sunday morning while
Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Snipes were
asleep in bed at their home 16
miles North of Thomasville, near
Meigs, a pistol was fired through
the window, presumably at Mr,
Snipes, but the ball took effect in
Mrs. Snipes. It penetrated one
lung and one kidney and lodged in
the woman’s back and caused her
death a day later.
Three boys about twenty years
old ehch, are in the Thomasville
jail charged with the murder.
Soon after the shooting Sheriff
Hight took dogs to the scene ot
the shooting and they soon struck
a trail that led to the Tindall home
not far away, where the sheriff
found and arrested Morgan and
Arch Tindall and Matthew Thom-
The evidence against the boys
is circumstantial, but seems to
point strongly to the guilt of at
least one ot tbe three. Clay from
a freshly dug well near tbe window
through which tbe shooting was
tfohe'at the Snipes house showed
tracks and the same tracks led
through a plowed field towards tbe
Tindall home. When tbe boys
found fitting the tracks, and on
them was sticking some of the
same clay from the Snipes well
Recently it appears that Arch
Tindall wrote an insulting note to
severely abused him. This is as
signed as the motive, and it is in
ferred the shot was intended for
Snipes. Mrs. Snipes was a highly
respected woman and leaves a
large family of little children.
