year.
In the schools selected any girl
above the age of ten years may
become a member of the School
Club by securing one tenth acres
of land to cultivate in vegetables,
promising to follow instructions
sent and to keep records of the
crop through the season. Seeds
are furnished by the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture, in ■ co
operation with the State College
of Agriculture, and instructions
for cultivating the crop from
these two institutions. Only a
few varieties of vegetables are
planted, tomatoes, beans and cu
cumbers being selected for the
first year.
These Girls’ Clubs are organiz
ed in same way as the Boys Corn
Clubs b> the County Superinten
dent of Schools and his corps of
teachers, who enroll the members
and send lists to the SchooUSxten-
sion Departmdht of the' College
of Agriculture.
This list should be sent to the
College early enough to insure
names being registered in time
to have seeds and instructions
sent before the planting.
The boys Corn Clubs and the
Girls Canning Clubs are links
which connect school and^iome;
the school may profit as does the
home through the club work.
Every progressive teacher
knows the value of seizing upon
the child’s interest in home ac
tivities and using'it in directing
his education. This teacher fur
ther realizes that soundest educa
tion and the best results in
school room work, can be secused
only when such subjects as read
ing, arithmetic, nature study,
composition,, etc. are used in
dealing with practical problems
Monday for Atlanta, where they
will be present at the great Corn
Show being held this week. Mr.
Pittman came in to the Search
Light office the latter part of last
week and brought a number of
samples from the fields where
the boys of the county made such
remarkable yields. 1
The yields in this county from
Ihe acres cultivated by the boys
in the contest ranged all the way
from 47 bushels 103 3-4 bushels
to the acre. It is expected that
even a greater showing will be
made next year. *
The great Southern Corn Show
opened in Atlanta Tuesday and
closes today, (Ifriday). A big
parade was held Wednesday in
which a thousand farmer boys
were in line. \'
The boys frorj Decatur doubt
less gathered inspiration from
what they saw ind heard during
the big meeting-
It is believed Ithat the Southern
Corn Show wilt go a long way in
bringing the S^uth to the front
as the greatest corn producing
section in the United States, and
Southwest Gfeorgia is being
looked upon as sne of the centers
of this great section.
