Sheriff Emanuel west to the
carnival grounds and closest up a
number of their places Tuesday
night. The places are said to
haye contained “games of
chanced arrangements.
Next morning th« Sheriff
went to the near-beer places
where slot machines were being
operated and ordered them clos
ed, which was done. These
have been allowed to be operated
here entirely too long. They
should have been closed months
ago, it reports about their ©per .
tion are true.
There is growing a strong'
sentiment in the community
against all such things and it is
only a question of time when
they will be shut outfalti gother.
It may be necessary to stop car
nival companies from coming to
Bainbridge. Good clean shows
and places of amusement consti
tute one thing, but games of
chance and gambling machines
are an entirely different matter.
When such things are tacked on
to carnivals and shows it makes
the whole thing look ugly to a
large element of people, and
that class refuse to patronize
them at all on that account.
It may also become necessary
for the City Council to pass an
ordinance revoking the license
of any near-beer saloon in future
where one of these machines are
seen in operation.
