BAINBRIDGE, GA., JUNE 21, 1912.
Several of the Republican
delegates from Georgia were
hurt in a wreck as they neared
Chicago Monday. Postmaster
Liverman from Bainbridge was
a delegate from this state, but
fortunately he was not on the
train that had the accident.
The anti-fly movement just
started in the city will no doubt
result in the destruction of thou
sands of the pests. The women
of Bainbridge are behind the
movement and that means that
swatting business will be great.
Sidewalk paving must be the
next slogan for Bainbridge. The
only thing needed is for the peo
ple to get behind such a move
ment and the next two years
will see every sidewalk in the
city paved from one end to the
other.
You had just as well settle
your mind on the fact that Bain
bridge has started on her growth
to a greater city. By the next
census she will have apopula
lion of not less than ten thou
sand. Let’s come together and
make it ten thousand in the next
five years.
We are glad the boosting arti-
B;'e in the Search Light lust w> ek
struck such a responsive chord in
the minds of the people. Every
thing said was based on actual
facts. Many things were left
off that could have been said.
The truth is, Bainbridge has be
gun to do things in a real way,
and the spirit of enterprise
awakening in the people will yet
make Bainbridge one of the lead
ing cities of Georgia.
It has been suggested that
during these hot, summer Sun
days :i most Christ-like spirit
would be for owners oi autos to
carry some of the older people
to and from church. This was
suggested by one who has noticed
that this very thing is being done
• by at least one person. He sees
to it that some one of the dear
old mothers or fathers are car
ried. This saves them from
trudging through the extreme
heat, and requires but a few min
utes of time. A kinder, nobler
act could hardly tie thought of.
It seems that the whole Hoke
Smith faction in Atlanta has sur
rendered to the other side. Tom
Hudson seems to have displayed
the same white feather and
ducked under with the others..
We have only two candidates in
the field for Governor now, and
both of these were ardent sup
ports ofjthe Joe Brown faction.
Joe Hill Hall denies this on his
part, but too many of us remem
ber when he came through this
section using all the thunder he
could against.Hoke Smith in favor
of Joe Brown. Those of us who
belong to the Hoke Smith faction
need not get “het up” at all in
this race. But we hope Georgia
will never be divided up again
over two men. We hope in the
future the liattle will Ik* between
the progrt ssive Democrats and
the standpatters. So far as the
editor of the Search Light is con
cerned he is a Progressive Demo
crat, anil he hopes in the future
alwa\s to have some one to vote
for fur Governor who is of the
me t».i iticf.1 faith.
JUST A LITTLE BOOSTOLOQY.
Let’s try boosting Bainbridge.
Maybe after all, that is what the city needs more thai
thing else.
We all know that most children can more r .3sily be i<
greater efforts by encouragement than by threats (r scot
And the same thing is pretty true about grown people.
We are talking now from a standpoint of material®progress
and development. We all know that more enterprises are needed
in Bainbridge. Let’s encourage me* on the inside to put up the
capital for these enterprises, or else if the capital is not here, go
outside and encourage the capital to come here. This can be done
by making it plain to the outsider with capital to invest, that Bain
bridge has the natural advantage of location above any other small
city in Georgia. She is situated in the center of one of the richest
belts of farming land in the south. She is blessed with railroad
facilities and water facilities that give her equal advatages in
freight rates to most of the larger places. This feature alone
ought to make Bainbridge a great manufacturing and shipping
center.
It may be that we have not stressed enough the advantages
enjoyed by Bainbridge from the shipments by the water route,
The city is situated at the head of deep water navigation on the
Flint River. A line of boats that will average among the finest on
the Southern rivers plys the Flint fr6m Bainbridge to Appalachi-
coia and Columbus. If some other places had the advantages of this
liver and these boats, they would be advertised and known through
out the country. From this time on, the Search Light intends
that not only will the advantages offered by the water facilities
be known to the outside world, but with this, every other advan
tage Bainbridge has to offer.
Let us stop kicking and growling for awhile, and come togeth
er in one mighty pull for Bainbridge.
Bainbridge is worth pulling for She is naturally the most
beautiful place in the South. She has the natural location unequal
ed by any other place. She has the climate, the water, the health,
and everything else the investor is looking for. Bainbridge also
has some pluck. Lots of it. This is shown by the many public
improvements now under way and contemplated. If you should
stumble up on any one who has had the impression that Bainbridge
is dead, you can inform him that she is right now doing more than
any other place of her size in Georgia. You can tell him all this,
and then bring him here and point it out to him. You can show
him the busy, working, stirring Bainbridge of today, and then
you can point out the future Bainbridge. You can show him that
here is the natural gateway into Florida for this entire Southwest
ern section. You can point out to him that when the Panama Ca
nal is completed and the Gulf cities spring into new life, Bain
bridge will be in the natural line of this new growth and life and
development. You can tell him that in the near future Bainbridge
will not only lie one of the busiest little cities in the South, but it
will he one of the greatest winter resorts in the South.
The Search Light will take the liberty here and now, to state
that in a very short time a Board of Trade will be organized here
that will take hold and advertise Bajnbridge as she has never been
advertised before. This must be done. This will be done.
Speaking of the anti-fly and
anti-mosquito campaign reminds
us of one of the physicians of the
county said--to us a week or so
ago thtlO^verybody having a
pond or pool or water of any
kind standing about the premises
should pour kerosine oil over such
places. This means certain de
struction to mosquitos in their
first state and keeps them from
multiplying. Every time you
swat a mosquito you destroy an
agent of chills and fever.
