Swatting Fly Contest Ends THINGS LIVEN The adjounned term ofSupe rior court of Decatur county has been in session since - Monday of last week, this being the second week. It has been one of the busiest sessions held for some time. Last week was the time for the civil docket to be called, and a number of civil cases were dis posed of. The criminal docket was called Monday of this week, and the Court has been busy looking after that feature since that time. The first case called was that of the State vs Emory Harrell who was charged with the murder of Emory Sullivan at Vada some time ago. The case excited a great deal of interest throughout the county because of the prominence of the families directly interested. Strong legal talent was employed on both sides and every point was con tested for with that determina tion that only the strongest tal ent can bring to bear. The jury brought in a verdict of acquittal. The next case was that of a bunch of six negroes arraigned ’his case was concluded Wednes day night. At the time of this writing ^Thursday) the Court is busily engaged in the trial of Douglas Lewis Charged with the murder of Jasper Glover. The killing occurred some weeks ago in the yard at the home of Lewis, who is a tenant on the farm of Glover. A large number of witnesses are being examined and the case is being fought out by some of the strongest legal talent in this section. The trial is being at tended by large numbers of people who are interested in the outcome of the case. It is ex pected that the trial will last a day and a half. The Grand Jury has been in session for two weeks and it is said that that body has had the busiest session in a long ti tie. It is reported that a large number of true bills have been found and that the recommendations of the body will be quite a lengthy document. ,li is understood that some very Selous matters have gone before the Grand Jury and that the Body has been very hard at work For the past two weeks the small boy has been swatting the fly right and left, and in conse quence Bainbridge has learned a lesson never to be forgotton. Every one will tell you that the fly is counted among humanity’s greatest enemies. This campaign has been conducted by the Health Committee from the City Federation of Women’s Club and was a success as far as they could carry it-Namely: from an educational standpoint. However the work must not stop here, we must now have all breeding places for flies entirely destroyed, and for the ac complishment of this excellent work we look to our City Fathers and our Board o f Health. Through them we soon can have a City Clean, a City Beautiful, and a City unsurpassed i n Health. 'rhe contest was a lively one and was concluded with the a- warding of the prizes on Satur day afternoon. The total number of flies killed ran more than one hundred and fourteen thousand which means billions upon billions of flies less for the season 1912. Eager and interesting were the little faces that waited at , up BU’ouncs Legislative Race Seems to be the CKcf Topic of Conversation. The legislative race in Deca tur county is becoming a matter of more interest and thought than people believed would come into it. It looks now as if sev eral candidates may be in the fiield. It will be noticed that a call has been made for a mass meet ing of those opposed to the new county movement for the pur pose of putting out a candidate on that issue if it is thougnt beat. There are a large number of vot ers opposed to a new county be ing formed. There also a large number in favor of the movement for a new county. Mr. Cum mings in his announcement comes out squarely and tells the voters exactly where he stands on the question. Some say they will opose Mr. Cummings on the new county issue. Others say that, while they are not in favor of the new county they are going to support Mr. Cummings be cause there are other things to be looked after besides the new on the charge of murdering p n , c . e '’ ta ' n cases- . The killing bein ^ c , olnrT ? en _ t f';" was done at night and by one or more than one, of a bunch of six. As in the other case this one was also represented by strong legal talent on both sides, and the trial was watched with much interest. It is understood that the result was a verdict finding three of the negroes guilty with a recom mendation to mercy and the other three were acquitted Death of Mr. McKeown The death of Mr. Willis Mc-ji]§I‘* ,T nouncement of Judge Keown, which occured in Deca-|^ , reeecl ® n a8 tur last Friday was a distinctly 1 '* 1 ' *the Albany c.rcu.t w.H shock to his many friends in this 1 *'r 11 ' In issue, city Mr. McKeown, who was', .^ ePark 18 trying h.s first just 24 years old, moved away,*’'? ™ th ? b T encb \ 80 fa . r a3 from Bainbridge when he was^,^ f L, ? bt knc T' *! v< ! n quite a boy, going to Decatur 1 9** I’* 1 faction, and .s likely with his mother. The Course will consist of four entertainments, and they will be given in the Auditorium of our new school House; infact it is the plan to open the Auditorium with the first number. This will be the latter part of January or early in February and the enter tainments following will be a few weeks apart: Tickets will be | ‘"date $2.50 for the course and halfi price for children. It is earnest ly hoped the people of our City will patronize this enterprise, for the Committee has under taken it—not so much in the hope of making money, as to give to the people of Bainbridge a number of high class and whole some entertainments at numerate prices. Lightning Kills Two Mules. A bolt of lightning Friday Killed two fine mules belonging to the Ellis Transfer Company. It is said the mules were among the best the company owned. The mules were being used in hauling dirt about the grounds of the new school building. A hard shower of rain had begun to fall and the colored driver had left the wagon and team and gone into a nearby house to get out of the shower, when the bolt of light ning came.
