Delightful showers, tho light
in may sections, are visiting the
growing crops, and they are
more encouraging. While crops
in general are not as promising
as they were last year, it is safe
to say that some have better
crops than they had last.
The tobacco crop is surprising
ly good, that is with those who
have any experience in growing
it and made good use of his ex
perience. Some of those who
have excellent tobacco in quality
as well as quantity and beauty of
growth are: Speight & Canty,
Cumming & Chason, The Suma
tra Tobacco Company, Col. Jno.
E. Donalson (Mr. Hoyt Small
wood Supt.), M. C. Williams and
Mr. Tom NcCall is the “Tyrus
Cobb’ ’ for the Amsterdam farm
at Laingkat. There are oth
ers who have very good tobacco.
I have seen the crops grown on
these farms for five years, but
this is the best without a doubt.
The boys test acres of corn are
standing out as spectacular cen
ters on many farms. The ad
verse conditions early in the sea
son caused many to fail, or drop
out, but those who held on with
the “Lincoln” determination
have something now worth see
ing,. We must understand,
boys, that we must make the
farm a business—every year just
as the successful banker, mer
chant or banker does his busi
ness. Many of the boys have
made an honest effort and have
fairly good corn—above the aver
age; but Bernard Duke, Donal-
sol Swicord, Willie Griffin, Jim
mie Taylor and Carl spooner are
well in the lead at this writing.
However, “the race is not al
ways to the swift”, and some
other boy may come out ahead.
Do not become discouraged and
quit if you dhly make 40 bushels
to the acre. This is much better
than 15 bushels. You are learn
ing to make more corn and bet
ter corn profitably, not to get
prizes. If we can bring our aver
age yield up from 14 bushells to
30 or 40 as it should be, this will
be a good step in bettering condi
tions in the South.
The most beautiful plots we
see just at this time are the one
tenth acre plots of tomatoes
grown by the Canning Club
Girls. This is a work worthy of
note and more people shou'd be
interested in this. Every girl in

should be an active member of
this club. We generally find a
