a deliberate thrust at Mr. Cum

want to mislead the voters by
trying to get them believe some
thing like a dark plot has been

The only plot that has been
made was by those opposing Mr.
Cummings, in sending out a cir

voters, and at the same time re
fusing to let the editor see one
in time to reply to it.
Such methods are not employ

The rank whiskey papers keep
calling Hooper Alexander a
“fanatic”, "crank,” and-other
such names. Every true and
great man has been called by
some such name. It was so in
all the past ages. It will always
be the case so long as there are
men and papers who want to
flood the country with barrooms
and other dens of vice and shame.
They cannot answer fche charges
that Alexander brings against
them. They go down before his
the author.
It concerns us very little as
to who the author is.
This same thing was tried
once before by Ja certain gang.
It went back on them, and had
exactly the opposite effect to
what they intended. It did the
Search Light good, and helped
the cause the Search Light had
espoused.
You may expect more circu
lars. Some may be signed,
others may not. They are beir§
handled by a crowd who are
trying to do things “in the-dark.
Such methods were used way
back in the ages when people
had become enlightened just
enough to wear clothes. Most
people have quit it now.
Some people are good docters
and business men, some are
good lawyers (in divorce cases)
but when certain people try to
play politics they make a mess
of it. They hurt the very cause
for which they stand. Q

Mr. Editor: —
I hear a rumor to the effect
that Mr. J. T. Lane will reply in
this week’s issue to a little arti
cle you published for me last
week, and that he will attack me
severely, charging that 1 have
made false statements etc. Now
I wish to say just here that I
have always been Mr. Lane’s
personal and political friend, and
while the same personal friend
ship still exists, I reserve the
right to attack his political con
duct, especially when he de
nounces me in the public prints
as a falsifier, so should. I now
appear somewhat harsh, the
reader can readily see my justi:
fication.
I have made no • statement
relative to the new county move
ment or the incidents connected
therewith, but what I still stand
by and am prepared to prove
and also prejv>~>d to prove what
r,iay now be 3hid attacking Mr.
Lane’s action as representative.
Now what is his record? In the
first place, at a public meeting
called in the interest e^the new
county, after he h c ’’ i elect

clearly and enl t)3.1 f^the

was in session, he kepy > «ng
he was r.ot opposny' r the
movement, thereby encouraging
our people to continue spending
time and money in the fight,
while in reality he opposed it to
such an extent that of the twen
ty-one members of the legisla
tive committee before whom our
delegation was to appear, he and
Mr. Bower together succeeded
in keeping all but twelve from
the hearing, but even under
such circumstances 25 per cent
of the number present voted in
our favor. The showing the
new countv advocates made be
fore this committee was so over
whelmingly convincing that he
himself exclaimed “I am between
the devil and.-**”-deep sea.” I
am sure he \\\ eny that the

Mr. Lane to produce the men 1
from whom he claims to have I
received his information. j - =====
What a pity that Mr. Lane
should think that I, or any one!
else, is trying to hurt his busi-'
ness. That is too absurd to con
sider for a moment. He tries to
make the impression that I am
in favor of legislation that would (
be against the interest of the 1
people in the territory generally,
how could I afford to do that
when he knows the nature of my
business is such that its success
is dependent on the success of
the people of the entire commun
ity, and what hurts them finan
cially would in like manner hurt
me. |
It is claimed that Mr. Cum
mings, one of the candidates, j
ownslands all the way from Lela
to the corporate limits of Donal-
sonville. This I emphatically
deny and repeat that he owns
no property in Donalsonville or
nearer it than Lela station.
As to whether the people of
the territory affected really de
sire the election of Mr. Cum
mings and the creation of the
new county, the result of the
election now so near at hand will
convincingly shov;, and I am glad
to know that Mr. Lane says in
substance he will then submit,
and not protest further. Now
we will see .whether he again
“changes his mind.”
Respectfully submitted,
A. R. BENTON.
