The Search Light feels like rising to thank the administra tion for the beautiful paved streets; the magnificent school building, which is under con struction; for the pretty city hall just begun and for the extension of the sewerage system, which means so much for the health of the city, , While the Mayor and Aidermen have been busy many of the private citizens have not been more than a half dozen associa tions for the prevention of tuber culosis, organized on a wide basis in the United Statas. To day such associations have been formed 1rt practically every civi lized country in the world. Even China is begining to take action along this line, while ac tive associations are at work in Turkey, India, Japan, the Phili- pines, South Africa and Iceland. There are 420 local organizations in the United States. The Anti-Tuberculosis work is bei ng practically supported by The Search Light sends Christmas greetings to all, it has been a prosperous year With each subscriber. In back over the past year’s life, we woulff all probably 1 take back some things we have done or said, or would do them or say them differently if we had the opportunity. How clearly our mistakes appear after it is too late to correct them. Some of us can look back over what we have slid and done and find something to be proud of. Some things the Search Light has done that it would do dif ferently, or let entirely alone, if it had the time to go over again. But some things we have advocated and Btood by we are proud of We have fought for pure morals. We have fought for whiskey and all intoxicants to be driven from among our people. We have steadfastly refused to take a whiskey advertisement. We arc proud of our record on all these questions. No child in Decatur county can say of a whiskey advertisement “I saw it in the Search Light.” We are proud of that. No mother can say “The Search Light directly or indirectly helped to ruin my husband or son.” We are proud of that record. We want to continue the agitation of this question untile very weekly papi'er iri" Georgia levels Whis key advertisements off. Most of them now will not take ads at any price. May we live to see the day when none wiU do it. Our front page article last week has brought quite a pUih- ber of favorable comments. A number of new subscribers navfls also come in. There is much comfort in all this. A man is just like a child; when he has a heavy load or a hard task he does bet ter when he is encouraged. It’s good for him. We thank one and all for the words they have sent in or spoken in person. There are some we have never heard a whisper from however, that surprises us. They seemed to have been on our side until we came out so strong. Maybe they are not afraid. We hope they are not Say, can’t you spare the Search Light a Christmas present of a dollar—Just a dollar. It would be appreciated so much, and just now we are badly in need of it. You know whether or not you have paid us a dollar this year. If you have not, just one dollar n ,w as a Christmas present will be one of the very best things you can do for us. And besides you get your date run up a year. See how many will send in the dollar before Christmas day. Upshaw We hope in this territor y for Cyrene In looking Bainbridge Woman's Gab- Program of Band Concert Sunday Dec. 22nd, 1912 idie. He fol lowed this up with a visit to Bainbridge, Whigham, Colquitt and other places. Wherever, he went the people responded very liberally and the outlook for the future of Cyrene is brighter now than it has ever been. Mr. Upshaw will be in the ter ry again sometime the first oi next year. He feels sura > hat he will succeed in raising enough to place the school on solid foot- ing. Mr. Upshaw is considered one of the best financial agents ever put in the field for a cause of that kind. He knows what the struggle for an education means, and knows just how to bring the question home to the hearts of the people. The friends of Cyrene through out the territory are urged to as sist Mr. Upshaw in every way possible. With the cooperation of these there is not the least shadow of doubt about the suc cess of the undertaking to finance the school. The trustees of Cyrene held a meeting Monday in Bainbridpe. Mr. Upshaw was present at that meeting. The trustees are’ Very hopeful now that there will be no further trouble about finartcing the school, and expects it to be larger and more prosperous next year than it has ever been be fore. “The Home as Affected hr Modem Life” was the subject of a forceful paper given by Mr*. Wm. V. Custer at the jDemdibfg. meeting of the Bainbridge Wur man’s Club. Mrs. Custer war most sympathetic in her treat ment |of the strain of modem life—the high cost of living, tUh constant round of effort to gate the best in life either for one'* self or for others, the peculiarly unsettled .situation with regard to child-development—all theaa strains are making nervous wrecks of those passing through this place of civilization. Mr*. Custer pointed out as the solu tion of these problems the intel lectual development of the mass es and added power in the hands of a truly enlightened woman hood. The paper of Miss Onys Willis on "The Divorce Evil” was ex cellent. While divorce has been steadily increasing for a number of years, to a point where Ana divorce from sixteen marriages seems a near-possibility, that the home of to-morrow would be founded on a secure basis of a better understanding and higher ideals. Shooting Affair Near Lakeburf A serious shooting affair occurred over in the neighbor hood of Lakeland Monday morning, in which Messrs. Ross Mcrkinson and Ike Dean both received gunshot wounds. it seemed from the best in formation that can be gathered that Dean, and his wife had sepatrted, she having gone bade to her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Merkinson’s. Dean went to the home Monday morning. Just what words were passed has not been learned, but Dean, accord ing to the report, had his shot gun with him and after a few words pulled dowh on tfitfridii- son. Merkinson had wheeled around'however, and his hade was turned towards Dean when ' the latter fired. Some of the shot grazed Merkinson’s face and a number entered his shoal* . der; one side of his hat was torh away by the shot. It is said that Dean then fired at his own wife, but the shot went wild. He then turned r the /" gun upon his wife’s mother, but ■ missed her also. Dean then started away and was climbing new music, everything new.
