n. 1V1. U I Bainbridge, Ga.
La.
Dr. J. D. Chason, chairman of
the committee appointed to pro
mote a meat packing plant for
Bainbridge, Decatur county and
southwest Georgia is enthusiastic
over the prospects of raising the
capital and organizing the opera
ting company.
A meeting of the central com
mittee, appointed to advise with
chairman Chason will be held
shortly. At this time an appli
cation for a charter will be filed
with the clerk ot the superior
court.
It is proposed to erect a mod
ern meat packing plant in this
city with a daily capacity of 500
hogs and 75 head of cattle. The
plant will be ready for business
by the middle of November at
the latest.
The charter will call for a
! $200,000 corporation with the
| privilege of increasing the capi
tal to $1,000,000, stock will be
placed on the market shortly.
In discussing the proposed
plant with a representative of
the Post-Search Light, Dr. Cha
son said:
‘ ‘The great necessity of a meat
packing plant located in Bain
bridge is apparent to everyone
who gives this important matter
due consideration. Our people
ate awakening to the fact that
the boll weevil is actually in our
midst and that we can no longer
grow cotton at a profit, at any
price.
“The people of southwest Geor
gia have already begun in a limi
ted way to turn to stock raising
as a solution of the problem that
faces them. If the business is
to be fostered and made renum-
erative a market must be provi
ded for the stock. The present
market is limited by the limited
capacity of the packing plant in
Moultrie.
“Many have grown hogs for
the Moultrie market and been
forced to carry them for weeks
at a dead loss, after they were
ready for the plant. This re-
£ duces the profit greatly. The
' BainDridge plant would furnish
a local market that would help
solve this problem.
“This is not a project lor De
catur county alone but for all the)
adjoining counties. Early, Mil
ler, Baker, Mitchell, Grady,
Leon, Gadseu, and Jackson coun
ties all border on and surround
Decatur county and are vitally j
interested in the proposed pack
ing plant.
“This industry must be fos
tered by everyone as it is of in
terest to all alike. Merchant, |
banker, real estate dealer, land
lords, artisan and tenant alike)
are interested. If we fail to
provide a market for our farmers
the merchat’s business will sutler,
hank deposits will tall oif, the
real estate man will be unable to
to market these crops in the
form of milk, poultry, beef and
pork and byproducts.
“It is the duty of every man,
be he farmer, merchant, banker,
railroad man, wage earner, pro
fessional man, or whatever his
avocation, to contribute his sub
scription to this important pro
ject. A failure to do this will
certainly act as a boomerang to
all collectively.
“This is no time to wait for
the other fellow to put up his
ducats while you reap the profits
at his expense. Such a mistaken
principle will spell failure. • “In
Union there is Strength,’’and “in
Division there is Weakness.’’ It
the people of southwest Georgia
allow this project to fail the
fault will be theirs and they will
repent sooner or later.
“Now is the time to think
seriously and act quickly and
courageously. No task is too
hard for our good people, Even
