In Winston-Salem, N.C., there is a large manufacturer who does not simply advise thriftness and saving among his employes, but who digs down into his “jean,” so to speak, to supply the wherewithal for material and substantial encouragement to these qualities in his work man. Mr. R. J. Reynolds, head of the tobacco firm bearing his name, has inaugurated, to tak<? effect from the first of the year 2 per cent on the aggregate of his year, s wages as a beggining for saving or investment funds. The employee is at liberty to do as he will with the money al though it is paid with the dis tinctly expressed a desire that it be used for sound investment or placed in a saving bank account. Newspaper reports state that about $(50,000 will thus be con tributed annually to the potential savings accounts of over 7000 people. The immediate intrinsic value to the community, to say nothing of the normal value, cannot be measured by that figure, however. By stimulating habits of thrift and saving in. saving in people a tar step for ward has been taken toward making that people prosperous, and self-respecting. The plan is philanthropic, un doubtedly, but it is philanthropy with a method. The thrifty, satisfied worker is usually the honest, efficient, regular worker hence of greater producing pow er and value to his employer. An example has been set that well might be employer. It is in line with the trend of the best industrial spirit of the day.
