Polk county Florida has just placed a large contract for roads at a cost of $1,500,000 by bond issue. When the present prohibition law keeps most of the money in the state that has been going out for liquor gets into good working order and those dollares are put to work here at home in the regular local channels of trade the people are going to be pleased with every requirement of it. Occasionally some wise guy proceeds tc tell us of the needs of a daily paper here. It would do fine if one could be operated on air and vapor but it takes real support to keep a paper alive and the patronage of the ioeal mer chants in times like these can scarcely keep a weekly going. When the call to arms comes, we have a list of guys here in Bainbridge that [have been abus ing the president because he wont get them up a war to talk about around the post office lobby and on the Park that we are going to see are conscripted for the very first fight. Our county fared well, Mr. Cummings carrying the vote of every county in the state and District delegate John j W. Callahan carrying every' county in the district. The Decatur crowd went in behind their man solidly and put him over with a rush. There is no more staunch demo crat in the state than Mr. Cum mings and he deserved this re cognition at the hands of the democrats in convention as sembled. The Speeder is still in evidence j and will be it seems until they; are fined enough to hurt theiir tol pay. It is a fact that a man j don’t mind a fine of five dollars for speeding his car, but when he^ets hit for fifty he will set up and take notice. The sooner our Mayor begins to lay on fines that are really punitive then that much sooner will the speeders take notice. Most any city official ‘ hates to punish a man for any offense and if the man who speeds hated to break the law as bad as the Mayor hates to pun ish one we would have little of it. But so long as they don’t care enough about the city ordinances to respect them, the officials need not hesitate to give them what they want. A good stiff fine in these parlous times will correct the defect| in their vision that makes every street in town look like a race course and every child look like a chicken.
