PLENTY OF MONEY
Quitman, Nov. 19.—Business
conditions in Quitman and in
the county this fall have been
unprecedented in the matter of
general prosperity. The high
price of cotton and of seed has
turned loose a flood of money
here and has turned loose a
flood of money here has resulted
in much business development.
One interesting fact is that
the farmers are not only paying
up with the merchants for the
year’s supplies, but are buying
supplies for next year on a cash
basis and thus getting them
cheaper than would be the case
if they got them on credit. A
great many old debts and old
accounts have been settled,
which has had a good effect,
j As for trade conditions many
merchants here report that their
Saturday trade is now surpass
ing the usaul Christmas eve day
trade, which is always the
heaviest of the year.
SEA ISLAND SELLS FOR
SO CENTS AT QUIT
Quitman, Ga., NoV. 19.—Long
cotton is quoted in this county
at 50 cents a pound, T. S, Miller
selling a bale at Barwick at
that figure. A large acreage
was planted to long cotton in
the county and one farmer who
had sixteen acres of it made
$2,000. All the leading farmers
are unanimous in saying they
will not plant a large acreage of
of cotton next year and most
most of them are doing what
they can to get their tenants in
line bv warning them that they
must raise more hogs and feed
stuffs next year.
OLD NEGRO
Atlanta, Ga. Nov. 23—A back
seat for Georgia’s colored octo
genarians and centenarians!
Atlantians back from a hunt
ing trip in Flouida have discover
ed a negro Methusela who lays
them in the shade.
They declare that Uncle Toby
Jackson, who lives in Suwanee
county, must have discovered
the famous "Fountain of Etern
al Youth’’ for which the chival
rous Ponce de Leon vainly sought.
For Uncle Toby dates his birth
in the year of grace 1790, which
makes him 126 years of age.
Just received a lot of fresh fish
