PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON ISSUES
THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION URGING
THE NATION TO GIVE THANKS TO GOD
President Woodrow Wilson issued
his 19X7 Thanksgiving proclamation,
calling upon the nation, even in the
midst of the sorrow and great peril of
a world shaken by war, to thank God
for blessings that are better than
mere peace of mind and prosperity of
enterprise.
The proclamation, fixing Thursday,
November 29, as Thanksgiving day,
follows:
“It has long been the honored cus

about us. The great duties of a new
day awaken a new and greater nation

Don’t forget that your Christinas
list ought to be a little longer this
year. You have responsibilities out
side of your family and friends. You
owe something to the men who have
gone to France to Aght (n this war.
Every one in thia country who is
not fighting ought to recognize the
fact that he has an obligation to our
soldiers this Christmas. Think of the
condition under which our boys aiw
going to be called to “celebrate”
the Yultide season of 1917. Three
years of war have made us all pretty
familiar with what Christmaa la on
the Western front. No further words
are necessary.
Your chance to make one or more
soldiera a little happier is right hero
and now through our Tabaeco
Fund. The purpose of this fund is
to make it easy for you to send in
expensive gifts of tobacco and ciga
rette to the soldiers and it haa been
worked out to reduce your effort to
the minimum. In fact the price for
this privilege Is not out of reach of
any man, woman or child In this city.
When you realize that only 2Se ia
required from you to place in the
hands of a fighting soldier a package
containing enough smokea for a week,
you can see what you ought to do.
What’s a quarter, anyway? A good
deal to some people, we’ll admit. But
to one of our boys longing for a*
smoke, such a package is worth a
good deal more than its weight in gold
If you have any doubt of that, just
ask us to show you aome of the tes
timony that has been coming over
from the other side. The men are jut
longing for American tobacco and cig
arettes and this country is nobly re
sponding to the demand and sending
thousands and thousands of these
kits to France.
And right now at this moment in
your chance to have your contribu
tion count at Christmas time. Dae’t
put it off, because it takes a lung
time to get these kits delivered and
your contributions today will just
about connect with what we call over
