THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK
The Board of County Commission
ers met in regular session Monday
morning with a full membership pres
ent except Mr. T. E. Rich, who was
confined to his room with grippe. Mr.
A. Parker and Mr. W. W. Gibson re
tired from the Board after long and
faithful service. Mr. Gibson becom
ing one of the commissioners of the
new county of Seminole. Messrs. J.
H. Gray and John Chason, new mem
bers were sworn in and went to vfork
on their new duties. The morning
was spent in paying bills. The min
utes were adopted as read. The
Chairman addressed the retiring
members and wished them all good
luck and prosperity in their work and
he also addressed words of welcome
to the new members. Mr. Gibson in
vited the Decatur Board to go over
and sit with the Seminole board. The
bondsmen of Mr. Murphy, road tax
Collector for 1920, of the Brinson dis
trict, were ordered to have Mr. Mur
phy come in and make settlement, as
more than the legal time had passed
and his settlement had not been made.
Tax errors were taken up and some
of them corrected. Messrs. Townsend
and Smith appeared before the board
in the interest of the Farm Bureau.
Chairman Harrell called the attention
of the board to the financial condi
tion of the county and especially to
the fact that the operation of the
health law and dipping law for the
past two years had cost the county
nearly forty thousand dollars unex
pected expense and that the condition
of the treasury was in bad shape and
would continue to be unless some
scheme of retrenchment was started
by the board right now. He advised
that the road squds be put in two and
the saving of salaries in that alone
would be about $10,000 per year. A
communication from Mr, Rich the
sick member made suggestions along
the same line, the suggestions meet
ing the approval of Mr. Gray. Know
ing full well' that the people of the
county are keenly anxious to see some
evidences of retrenchment by their
county board this, movement was sug
gested as a beginner. The salaries
of the Dip-Vat men will be cut some
as well as other wages. The com
munication of Mr. Rich carried sug
gestions along the same line, he feli
citating the members, the superinten
dent, the clerk and the Editor of the
Post-Searchlight and all the co-work-
ers of the county. Mr. Rich’s sugges
tions were along the same line that
were made by Chairman Harrell and
Mr. Gray. The county decided to em
ploy an auto mechanic to keep up the
county trucks and tractors. This step
will prove a saving to the county. The
camps will be consolidated in a short
while and great expense can be saved.
Mr. Christie of the state Tax Depart
ment attending the session asking
for the state’s share of the delinqu
ent taxes for the past seven years
which amounted to about 3300 dollars.
Taken altogether the meeting was the
most interesting held in some weeks.
The present board will try to retrench.
The statutory expenditures thnt the
board has to make now, expenses re
quired by law that the board can not
help run well up into thousands and
are matters of grave concern to the
