NEGRO BOATMAN DROPS DEAD;
BOAT OVERTURNS, BODY SINKS
II. M. M’lntosh, Editor of Albany
Herald, in Boat at Time
-The drink that brings content
—Orange Crush.
Editor Able to Swim to Overturned
Craft; Body Recovered Later,
Albany, Ga., Aug. 6.—While pad
dling a boat for H. M. McIntosh, edi
tor of the Albany Herald, on a fish
ing trip in Muckalee Creek, late
Thursday, Major Davis, a negro, was
striken with sudden death, his body
overturning the boat as it fell into
the water. At least, this seems the
only plausible theory for the acci
dent, which precipitated Mr. McIntosh
into the creek, as well as the body of
the boat-paddier.
Mr. McIntosh was sitting in the
front part of the boat with his back
to the negro, fly-fishing, when sud
denly the boat turned over. Mr. Mc
Intosh said he went under, but came
up at once, calling to the negro not
to get excited but to swim quietly
back to the boat, knowing that he was
an expert swimmer. The boat, of
special construction sc that it would
not sink, was floating upside down,
and Mr. McIntosh quickly swam to it.
He then looked around for the negro,
but saw only his hat floating down
stream. The negro’s body never did
come to the surface agains until it
was found about midnight about 20
feet below the point where the boat
capsized.
Major Davis had been chaffeur and
boat-paddier for Mr. McIntosh several
years ago, later moving to Columbus.
He was hack in Albany on a short
vacation, and during his visit here
made arrangements to take his former
employer on one of their old-time
fishing trips. Though a young man,
and weighing nearly 200 pounds, the
negro had previously suffered from
heart trouble, and it is believed that
an attack of this kind suddenly seized
him as he was paddling the boat.
When his body was recovered, there
was no water in the lungs, and his
body was rigid in the position he as
sumed while paddling.
