Provokes Clash in Senate.
Washington, June 17.—Senators
supporting and opposing Henry Ford’s
offer to purchase and lease the Gov
ernment’s war projects at Muscle
Shoals, clashing today in a two-hour
heated discussion over ways and
peace-time operations.
Senator Underwood, of Alabama,
Democratic leader, proclaimed himself
a “Ford man” and asked an oppor
tunit.v to vote for the acceptance of
the Detroit manufacturer’s proposal
before Congress adjourned.
Senators Norris, of Nebraska, chair
man of the agrieultue committee which
is investigating Mr. Ford’s propo.-al In
connection with other offers for Muscle
Shoals, ulso went on record. He de
clared he was opposed to the accept
ance of tlie Ford tender or to any
other, which would have the effect
of selling properties costing the peo
ple $106,000,000 for $5,000,000 and
leading those not sold to private in
terests for a period of 100 years.
■Senator Heflin, Alabama, joined his
j colleague in a way that left no doubt
| as to his position on the Ford oft'er
I and precipitated a sharp verbal ex-
, change with Senator McNary, Repub-
i lican, Oregon, and with Senator Nor
ris, when he said Mr. Ford had prom
ised to manufacture fertilizers and
sell them at one half their present
selling prices. The Oregon Senator
denied that Mr. Ford had made such
a promise und said he protested
against “such mis-statements.”
House leaders plan to vote prob
ably next week on the Senate amend
ment to the army bill appropriating
$7,600,000 for continuation of work on
the Wilson Dam. The conferee! on
the part of the House, it was be
lieved, would bring the amendment
before the house at that time in ac
cordance with the agreement they
made when the bill was given them
for conference consideration.

catrle had been beneficial to us in
any way. His reply was this: Mr.
Wingate I used to keep about one
hundred head of cows and they were
my bank account, when I happered to
get in a little strain possibly once
every four or five year's, I could draw
on my cattle and get relief and they
co-t me practically nothing to keep
up and raise, however, since dipping
came in, I found it to be such an ex
pensive troublesome, and costly hum
bug and force until cattle raising is no
longer profitable and for this reason
I am getting out of the game as fast
as I can- I only have thirty head
now and I mean to dispose of them as
soon as I can find a purchaser and
just keep one good cow from then
on. Dipping has knocked me out of
a reat little yearly income from my
cattle raising industry that I used as
a side line. We could name many
others that has had the same exper
ience that Mr. Duke has had and they
are butchering and selling out at any
old price that they can get for their
beef.

some deeply interesting sermons here
Saturday and Sunday. The quarterly

The marriage Sunday in Iron City,
of Miss Alice Drake and a Mr. Welch
was an interesting event to a great
number of admiring friends here. Miss
Drake has taught here in our school
for several years and on account of
her sweet quiet, unassuring nature and
disposition, won a warm place in the
hearts of our people, who wish for
them a full measure of bright serene
happiness, and prosperity all throng
this journey of life.
Malcoin - Robinson, a prominent
young man, who holds a responsible
position in Attapulgus, was here Sum
day visiting home folks and friends.
Brother Dawson, of Donalsonville,
filled his regular appointment at the
Baptist church here Sunday, his force
ful discourse on loyalty to God was
deeply interested and inspiring from
start to finish and plainly showed that
God requires all of our loyalty ar.d
allcgience to Him, and if its not given
| in peace on the final judgment day,
we need not expect God’s genuine love
and loyulty to us unless we give Him
ours in return.
D. L. Campbell, prominent citizen of
Gadsden County, attended services at
the Baptist church here Sunday night.
R. W. Arnold, of Chattahoochee,
Fla., was here on a visit to old friends
and neighbors Sunday and Monday.
Group No. 1 in our B. Y. P. U. ren-

Sunday night that we have ever heard.
Each one of the recitations being a
regular sermon within itself, ar.-i

hardest of old sinners. God bless their

Christian duty for the Lord.
