TheINugget.! DAHLONEGA, AUGUST 6, 1903. The Etowah Gold Mining Co. Enetrod at tlie Dnhloncga, Gft. as Second OlnHs Mutter. Official Organ of both City and County. Some thief entered the mansion and siole Gov. Terrell’s Panama hat the other night. Wo would l*c glad to givo our readers some legislative news but nothing being done. Last week a gentleman in Americas, Ga., shipped a lot of fine melons to a friend in London. Comptroller General W right cs timates that the increase in the valuation of the state tax this year will be great. Weil, it seems that Atlanta is going to get that much talked of depot. It will be large and one of the linosl in Georgia. Four persons were killed by ! Quite a number of gentlemen of | Da 111 onega and other places, met \ by invitation of Mr. C. R. Arnold, j general manager of the above com pany, on last Saturday at the Betz j Mine, now known as the Etowah Gold Mining Company’s works. Among the visitors were: Judge W. W. Murray and J. F. Moore, Esq., of the Crown Mountain Company; Col. Sharpe of Chattanooga, Tenn., who is a largo stockholder in the “Jumbo Mine,” which is, soon to start up on the Chestntee above the Garnet Mills. Also I)r. It. C. Whelchel, Col. W. A. Char ters, II. 1). Gurley, Esq., Major J. F. C.Tillson, W. P. Price, Jr., and Col. W. P. Price,Sr. ; the lat ter gentleman being a director of the company. The object of the visit was to witness the operation of the new machinery, just erect ed, especially the magnificent ore crusher, which reduces the ores to the fineness of flour in an incred ibly short t ime and at once carried by the water, which moves the lightning near Ccdcrtown, On., last Thursday while in a barn. Two J machinery, through a long length of boxes down to a large bin which holds the black sand, and mules were also killed. The bill making it unlawful for a laborer, under verbal contract, to bo taken from one party and hired to another, lias passed the senate. Judson Brinson, the Savannah cigar smuggler, made a confession last week implicating government officers and a hundred Savannah citizens. At Mutewan, W. Vu., one night last week Mrs. W. K. Dayis killed her husband’s favorite woman and then in man’s attire escaped'to the mountains. We notice that some of the weeklies are cheating their subscri bers by double leading their mat ter in order to fill up a good deal of space with but little work. The present members of the leg islature will soon come homo and take a vacation for ten months— not meeting again until June, 1904, unless an extra session is called. One day last week at the explo sion of two gun powder magazines at Lowell, Mass., over twenty per sons were killed and fifty injured. Fourteen houses were destroyed. Last week three negroes reached such gold ns may not have been caught by the riffles on the jour ney. 'I'lie achievement of this new process is to save the gold, which our miners all believe is largely lost and carried into the Etowah river. There was but one opinion among the visitors, and that was: if the new process is not ft wonderful success they were unable to discover a reason why. The host, Mr. C. R. Arnold, is the discoverer of the process and the inventor of the machinery, as well as general manager of the mines. I To drinks lemonade, as did all of his visitor® but in a near by cave, ns cold as Alaska, there was stowed-a way some of M". John F. Betz’s best brewed Philadelphia lager beer, which was drank in rememberance of the only man in America who ever put his hand on Pope Leo's head, and pro nounced a blessing on the man whose death has'so recently inter ested the whole civilized world, and which caused the Pope of Rome, to confer upon Mr. Betz though a Protestant.,* the honor of membership in the order of St. Macon from Danville, 111., fleeing (,lr ;S 01 3 r - ^ The lunch-dinner, of which the visitors partook, was not unlike the splendid menu provided by a Philadelphia connousure, and all from the lynch law. A word to the wise is sufficient. God bless the editor and the Nugget and all its renders. More later on. A fleetionately, J. Neivt. Austin. Thank you, sir. The above ut terances coming from an old man like Mr. Austin are highly appre ciated. He has quite a different feeling for us than the proud preacher here, who wanted us boy cotted and starved out because we wouldn’t stop the press and how at his presence one day. His ac tions have been such as to cause him to lose popularity and his congregations decrease so that he had to advertise “for a fool” fora companion, while the' Nugget is still prospering and gaining strength every day.
