Thoughts Concerning Nellie Davis. Of nil fcho requests that have boon Hindi' of mo and all the du ties that I havo been called upon to perform, the one that now con fronts mo is the grandest of nil. When I suffer my recollection to go back to my school days that ■was spent with Nellie, many fond recollections mingled with sad re flections bloom up before me. It was in school where 1 became per sonally acquainted with Nellie, as I did not have an opportunity to associate with her until we were large enough to attend school. As it happened, >.< were classed together, studied together, spent recess and hours together. Nellie studied well, obeyed her teacher, and was kind to her playmates. Well do I remember being with her at the entertainment a short time before her death. We had pur dolls, and 1 can almost hear Nellie recite her declamation, “The New Toy.” This little poem will remain in my memory while I live' in this in world. Hut little did 1 think that our parting on that night would prove so long a farewell. Next I must speak of her relig ious life. With this, also I chanced to be associated. ! saw her embrace a hopo in Christ, and from that moment to her death, I neither saw her nor heard of an net that was derogatory to a pure character. She abode in the faith, led a Christian life and clutched immortality without a shudder. Nellie sought, the future salva tion of her soul while she was yet very young; but so loyal did she remain to Christ that older mem bers of the church regarded her life purely ideal, and they were increased in the faith by the pious, and religious deeds she wrought. How often have 1 seen her in the revival meeting and when the holy spirit prevailed the Christian part of the audience, it always seemed that Nellie received a bountiful share. Notwithstanding the dear asso ciation, the purity, and the chastity of Nellie,.the great God who gave her an existence into t.lio world saw reasons to take her from our school, our church, and our dear association to a land of perpetual association and blessed union. It is a consolation that the end came peaceful and that she ever became anxious to change worlds. In this reflection 1 am made to exclaim with the poet: “Those feet Mint trod so often The thorny path of life, And the hand that wrought for others Are resting from the strife. Those lips by death are palsied, Yes, silent, is her tongue That brought to others sunshine By the precious words she spake. No shaft like Censors will he raised To give her name renown, the Master lias placed upon her head a gk rious crown Decked vi n stars for kind deeds she has done.” All these thoughts bring to bare upon my mind at their conieth a time when I too must leave this world and I sincerely hope and trust that I may he permitted to join that imperishable throng, and there rest in the shades of paradise forever more with Nellie. May Ahkiu homuik. July 81, 1008. In Memory ol Nellie Davis The respects which we have for our loved ones who have crossed tho silent stream of death, and home entered into the great be yond is made manifest by the vis it which is just made. Wo find that as wo walk the rugged paths of life that one by one at the call of tho Master they are passing over the river, and many who have died in Jesus are sweetly sleeping that sleep from which none ever wakes to sorrow. The passing of the old and the young is to us a gentle reminder that death rides upon the breeze and lerks in every flower. We must now say farewell, un til tho reseroction morning, when the dead in Christ shall rise and all the redeemed shall enter their everlasting home to sing praises to God forever. Auch: Net,son.
