Stay on the Farm.
For years and years the news
papers of tho South, and in Vir
ginia especially, have been ad
vising the young men to remain
on the farm in preference to seek
ing a fortune in the cities, but the
advice has not been heeded, and
daily the farm is being nolected
fora small salary in some city.
A few nights ago, while waiting
for a train in a nearby city, we
engaged in conversation with a
young man who was leaving a
good homo in one of the south-
side counties to go to Baltimore
to accept ;i position with the
street car company in that place
as a conductor. He had been of
fered $51 per month, and jumped
at it without taking into consid
eration the fact that it will cost
him nearly half that amount to
keep him a month, besides inci
dental expenses that can never be
escaped in aicity. Hb was leav
ing a. comfortable home, with
plenty to-eat, pure water to drink
and pure air to breathe, for what
most young men regard as a fine
opening when, they can command
as much as $50 a month. This
young man will have to work
twelve hours each day, Sunday
included, whereas at home he
would have Sunday as a day of
rest. Besides, the prices on farm
prod nets- are-no w so high that a
young man can remain on the
farm and by cl'oso attention to
business have more at the end of
the year than the average city po
sition will net him. He will also
have what money cannot buy—
good health. Young men, stay
on the farm.—Clifton Forge Re
