Soy lien n (Glycine liispidn), sometimes called Sojn benn, is a leguminous plant, native of China .•ntd Japan. In Japan it is an im portant food plant and has been cultivated l'tom very ancient times. Europeans cultivated if in botanic gardens for more than a century, j before it attracted any attention as a plant of much economic im- portanco. This plant lias been cultivated in the United States for j a number of years, but has been i used as a forage crop for about , fifteen years. ! The bean is an annual plant, I erect, with branching, hairy stems i whose leaves are more or less ! hairy. The flowers are violet coL ^ored and rather inconspicuous; the pods me covered with reddish hair and contain from two to five seed which arc spherical to elliptical and more or less compressed. The plants often reach a height of four feet or more, and may have as many as -foO seed. in experimenting with soy bean and cow pens: Noy bean hav was consumed at tho rate of (5.(5 pounds per cow daily, and cow pea hay at the rate of 7 pounds daily. per cent of soy bean bay and -- per cent of cow pea buy were rejected. Soy bean hay produced U per cont more butter and per cent more milk than an equal weight of cow pen hay actually consumed. Soy beans should be more ex tensively cultivated in the South. They arc easy to cure, and as they grow erect, there is freedom from taugling and for ihis reason, they are easily handled. Chas. \V. Day is, N. G. A. It is a most important moment when the two women, mother and sweetheart, who, best of all in the world, love one and the selfsame man are brought face to face for the first, time. If you are a man contemplating matrimony, if you have found the best, girl in the world, don’t bo rash, don’t intros duce her to your mother until you are quite satisfied she loves you sufficiently to desire above all else to get on well with her mother-in- law to he. Give her time to know you at ! your full worth, let her reflect up- , on the pains of losing you, and , then she will l>e more carcfn she approaches the good lady who has in a measure the keys of life and death in her hand. And, dear girl, try your best to please tho lady. For your own sake this should be done, for your BAHLONE&A, G A, FINE SHOES A SPECIALTY. 'N a DAILY H ACK JLITSTK to and from G ainesyille. FARE. »1.50- CONDITION ON GROWTH, It seems to do best on soils of medium texture that are well sup plied with potash, phosphoric acid and lime. Nitrogen is not so es sential, as it obtains its supply from tho air. It will grow on soils too poor to grow Clover, but does not do as '.veil on very poor soils as cow peas. It lias excellent drouth-resisting qualities and can with stand dry weather much bet ter than ordinary crops. In this country the relation of the soy bean to temperature has not been thoroughly tested, but it requires something near the tern peraturc of corn. It is not injur ed by frost like most plants, and for this reason, it cau be planted I earlier in tho spring. METHODS OF CULTURE. The planting should ho post poned until the ground is thor oughly warm. For only a crop of forage, it could bo sown on land after wheat, oats or barley have been removed. In this case the earlier varieties should bo used. For forage they should be sown broadcast or put in with grain drill. If they are grown for seed, (hey should be planted in drills from 2 to 8 feet .part, according I mo V„'; m as the soil is heavy or light. If ; drilled, from one half to three- ' fourths of a bushel per acre can ! bo used; but if sown broadcast j moro will be necessary. When drilled cultivation should begin | early. HARVESTING. It is best to cut for bay when the beans first begin to form in the pods. Of course, if cut later than this period, the hay would contain a larger i>er centage of fat and protein, but the stems would be rather woody and a large portion would be rejected by the stock, hence it is doubtful if much would be gained by the Inter cutting. If tho harvesting is done at a later peritxl the loss from the shattering of the leaves will be very great. The hay should he handled 11s little as possible, also to prevent shattering of the leaves. The amount of forage obtained per acre varies from 10 to 18 tons. 25 to 10 bushels of seed is the av erage yield. The yield has reach ed 100 bushels per acre. As to its digestibility and nur- trient substances, the soy bean compares favorably with clover, cow peas, alfalfa and the other legumes. As a soil restorer it is equal to cow peas; the. tubercles on the roots of the soy bean are much larger than those of the cow and pray that as you deal with this I mother so may heaven deal with 1 you. j How should a girl behave to her lovers mother? With gentle | courtesy, with ready deference. Much, in fact, as she would bohavc j to her own mother, only with more respect, with moro considers ation, because this mother is a stranger to her. She should not obtrubetho fact how I that, she knows each little prefer ence of her son least sho seems to usurp the knowledge which is the other’s. She should rot ostenta tiously address him by his Chris tian name, much less by a pet name. A touch of formal reserve. CITY DIRECTORY SUPERIOR COURT. 3rd Mondays in April and Goto her. ,J. J. Remember that it is in your power to bestow upon this older woman cither the crowning joy of life or the crowning pain. How anxiously she has looked forward to, and dreaded, the day when her son will say to her, “Mother, I want you to welcome a daughter.” IIow she prays his choice may be the woman to make him happy, and how she hopes sho may be a girl that she is able to get on with. You may say, “Oh, I’m not go- your | ove for her son is real and ing to marry his parents.” “I shan’t see much of them.” And the girl who says that determines ho shan’t see much of them either. “Of course, I shall be civil.” “I mean to try and be nice and kind to them.” These arc the senti ments which the fiance expresses to her friends before she goes ups on the customary visit of inspec tion. , "’his is not the spirit in which to sustain what must be for both sides a trying ordeal. There is no loving-kindness in it, there is nothing but the grossest selfish ness. How is a girl to behave? First of all, she should try and forget herself, forget her own doubts and fears, and think only of thoso of the other woman who is silting waiting her coming. Sho should think of the day which may come when she will bo a mother, when she will have to face this, often the bitterest, hour in a woman’s life, when the son who has been the daring of my heart will bring some bright eyed gir 1 into the room and in a thou sand subtle ways show' her that her reign is over, that sho is no longer true by. loving her for his sake be fore you have had time tc love her for her own. Then she will have tears of joy in her eyes when you kiss her good-bye, and your own lover, much as he may have loved you before, will feel a new passion of reverence added to his love, and you will be glad to know that you have been an angel of unity, not an angel of discord, and that’s what woman was mount to be.— Ex.
