Mr. Asa L. Merrick of Syracuse,
New York, was registered-at Hall’s

pany with Mr. J. H. Helmor, -a

Friday night Sheriff Dayis re
ceived a phone message from
the sheriff in Hall county to keep
j a look out for John Barnes, a man

and afterwards traded it for a
gray horse and got $40 to hoot and
was making his way to the moun
tains. Barnes, who called himself
.Tones, arrived in Dahlonega
about 11 o’clock that night and
stopped at the Tate House. He
was ten old to ride horseback com-
torluhly and had hired a negro to
bring him this far in a buggy, giv
ing him two dollars, a lantern and
a poefcet knife to make the trip.
Sheriff Davis didn’t know imy thing
about the old man’s arrival until
morning, after ho had left for Ten
nessee, having hired Tate, Little
field & Co., to have him conveyed
across the Blue Ridge in a buggy.
The Sheriff went in pursuit and
it was on'y a few hours till he had
his man safely imprisoned behind
the bars. When arrested Barnes
said he had rather “drop dead and
he buried right there than have to
face that crowd.” Tho sheriff of
Hall came up after the prisoner
and horse on Saturday and paid
the sheriff of shis county, ten dol
lars, the amount offered for his ur.
