Mr. Ashley stated in a poster
that tho democratic papers of the
Oth had been publishing lies about
him. This is true, when they
printed his card stating that ho
had been a “citizen of Georgia for
five years.”
Democrats, stand to your colors
and not allow yourselves to be
soft-soaped by any carpet bagger
like Ashley and his leaders and
followers. Be men and stand firm
to what you believe is right, even
if you do have to give up all offices
under the present administration.
Don’t allow yourselves to be pull
ed about by the nose.
It seems that Rev. A. M. Wil
liams, of Savannah, Ga., had his
ballot taken from him during tho
recent electron in Chatham county.
After visiting Atlanta he stated
that he didn’t go near the polls
that day, yet it was found where
“A. M. William-,” voted ballot No.
590, according to the general elec
tion returns filed with the secre
tary of state.
The Blue Ridge Post thinks it a
nice thing for the democratic pa
pers to howl because Mr. Ashley
failed* to pay his taxes, “when he
lives in their midst, developing
their mineral resources and build
ing school houses for their chil
dren.” Can you tell us whose
money he used? We can. It was
Mr. VanVleeks, a northern demo
crat. Why, Mr. Will Keanum, of
Lumpkin county, had to lock up
Mr. Ashley’s tools oyer on the
Cbeslateo river, before ho could
get money that MV. Ashley was
due him.-
The excuse for Col. Farrows re-,
moval from the Gainesville posts
office,- is that he is non resident of
the community. This lets"’ Ashley
out, for no doubt he would be
thankful for the post-office, but
having so mans different homes
can’t come in. The applicants
are: Mrs. James Longstrcet, II.
L. Richardson and Ben Landers,
but as the last two already hold
offices under Uncle Sam, the post-
office will doubtless be given to
some one else. Later.-^Tho lady
has been appointed.
A wVftef in the Mt. Airy Pro-
feclioiVirif Says Ashley ought to be
sent to cotfgfcss because he is a
man of refineni'ent and is a gradu
ate. There is no feasob in this.
We know of men who are just as
good looking, having its much re
finement. with as good an educa
tion’ as Mr. Ashley, who afe plow
ing Steers and would do more good
in congt'OSs in one session than he
could accomplish in twenty for the
people of the south. If Mr. Ash
ley is such an accomplished man
why couldu’t he get office at homo
in the north?
'Hie tone of the following letter
received on Tuesday from Col.
Howard Thompson at Gainesville,
I he petition XJhairrtian of the Central Cam
paign Committee, shows that the
man who crime Up here and started
the report that tho Colonel was
going to support Ashley, is badly
mistaken. Cel. Thompson says:
“Urge the voters through your
■columns to come out and help us
bury “carnetbagism’* for good and
all in the Ninth district. We have
the fight won, but we want to pile
up such a majority for Tom Bell,
our nominee, as will ho a warning
to “transient” candidates not to
“butt in” where they are not
wanted.”
