A notice of Mr. G. W. Gurley
j appears in this issue.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gurley are
up on a visit, from Montgomery,
Ala.
Bev. Mr. Elgin preached at
Maeedona church last Sunday at
11 o’clock.
See receivers sale in this issue, j Our office was made bright last
When you visit, Dahlonega call Mondu V ‘W the appearance of Miss
at the Bakery and buy loaf"bread, i N,innio ,,atfieI,| i of Monticello, in
Baked fresh daily. Fancy cakes I CO,upai W with Misa Kice, of
and lunches too.
Beginning September the first
we will publish the announcements
for the successful candidates in the
county primary until the (irial el
ection for 50 cents. Send in the
money l>v that time so as not to
be left off the list. Don’t forget
this, because you would hate to see
this list wit hoot your name after
1 he people have thought enough of
you lo nominate you.
The county primary, which clos
ed last week, was the “dirtiest”
one ever held in Lumpkin. Bet
11s hope that such a one will never
be repeated. All kinds of tales
and misrepresentation were made
and circulated, creating a bitter
feeling that will last for years and
in some instances for life. Wc can
not expect our county to prosper
as long as such things arc resorted
to.
Mr. A. A. McDo igald, of Gad-
distnwn, dropped in to see us last
week for the purpose of renewing
his subscription, instructing us to
coot inue sending the paper until
we joined the pentecostal hand.
Mr. McDougah* is much afraid of
1 hi« movement, and greater since
about two months ago when he
dreamed lie saw all these people in
hell. He said he could look down
and see them in the flames, pre
senting n most horrible sight, one
which lie can't keep oil of his
mind.
It had been dry here for three
weeks up to Thursday of last
week, when we had a ground soak
er and a trash mover, causing ev-
| etybody to lie delighted.
Horn Tom Bell has sent us the
district premium list for the fair
for publication which will appear
as soon as wo have the space. It is
one which will interest ever far
mer in t lie county.
Mr. Joe Davis, residing in New
Mexico, writes us that it is still
dry there and he is going to the
mountains soon where lw; can get
water to drink and to wash his
feet with.
Messrs. John and Jim Hall, of
this place, are having good luck
with their fish baskets kept in the
Chestatee river. They never fail
to bring in some of the finny tribe
every visit they make to their bas
kets. Aud the other day they
brought in sixteen pounds aud a
fourth, which sold 'ike hoi cakes
al 15 cents a pound.
Remember thtt B. R. Meadors |
& Sons keep the beet grade of
lard, flour, coffee, canned goods,
flavoring extracts, bran, shorts,
cotton seed meal, in fact every
thing that goes into the make up
of human feed kept by 11s is of the
very best quality the amount in
vested will buy. And quality
considered the price is always as
low and often a little lower than
the usual market prices. Five
pound cans of cooking oil at 70
cents, fine and clear. Como to see
us, and remember we guarantee
everything sold and will bo glad
to have your complaint and trade.
The new pentecostal church was
■not finished by last Sunday as was
expected but will be in readiness
by next Sunday. Some of the
members said that it would be
called the “Lord Jesus Christ
Church”, but several of the boys
have already named it “Tan-
yard Chapel.” As there were no
kind of a ceremony held at the
laying of the corner stone of this
structure wo judge that something
like the following program will be
curried out before the contract is
received aud everything pronounc
ed good: The divine healer wear
ing a clawhammer coat will enter
the door of the Chapel with two
of the interpreters in the rear
carrying a piece of cedar in one
hand aud -holding to the leaders
coat tail with till
by the choir singing “glo-ree.
The procession will march slowly
to the center of the building where
the highcockalorum will be found
standing on his head with each
foot bearing the photographs of
Mr. Burry aud Miss Trasher, the
founder of this new go called reli
gion m Dahlonega. Around him
they will march and chatter until
they become exausted aud the cer
emony will end.
t his place.
A very interesting meeting is in
progress at Wahoo church, in this
county, so much so that Mr. Tom
Sargent suspended his school for a
week.
One of the pentecostal sisters
has been sick ever since she was
baptized a few weeks ago, and
a brother has been unable to do
| anything for some time, waiting
for the divine healers to restore
him. Although any one ought to
know that they possess nor con
trol such nopower,, a young la
dy having cross eyes is now re
ceiving the attention of these fa
natics, Doing made to believe, that
they can be adjusted so she acjn
look with them straight atone ob
ject at the same time if she will
have faith gu their doctrine. Now
what do you think of this variety
of religion?
Relative to the sheep following
the shepherd of their notion Rev.
Luke Johnson, Presiding Elder,
gave tho most forcible illustration
that has been uttered in Dahlone-
ga, at the Quarterly Conference
Sunday night. Viz: That an
Eastern shepherd was asked by a
stranger and passer by to call his
sheep. The shepherd told him
they would not follow him. even
though the shepherd provided him
with his garb, his staff, etc. He
was convinced when the shepherd
took charge they immediately fol
lowed the voice of tho shepherd.
This illustration caused an ox-
change of smiles in the congrega
tion. Though indirect and the
name of no faith or order was
called, it was evidently under
stood.
Many of our people are getting
tired of liquor being used in our
county to ihfluence votes and wish
to put a stop to it if possible. We
will tell them how to do it by the
next campaign two years from
now: Let those opposed to it. sign
a petition plodding themselvc not
to support any man for office who
will use liquor directly or indirect
ly to ltiftueuce votes. Then if this
is done you will see every man go
to the polls aud vote clear headed,
and all prosecutions and trouble
that often originate from elections
will cease and by and by our taxes
will begin to decrease. But we
can prevent it being done at the
coming primary if those opposed
to the use of liquor, in elections
will try. We will do our part,
other, followed ; Now if any liquor has been used
! in the present campaign in this
manner in our county aud any reli
able person will let us know it we
will giye the name of the candi
date for whom it was used in our
next issue. And on the day of the
election if liquor is used at any
precinct in the county and it is
made known at Dahlonega in due
time a lot of voters here will act
as they should do—vote against
the candidate or candidates for
whom it is used.
Misses Belle and Myrtle Satter
field spent a few days in Dahlone
ga last week.
Subject at the Baptist church
next Sunday morning: “Princi
ples of 1110 Holy Ghost or of the
Devil in Daily Life.”
\\ e hnye made a change in tho
make up of our paper by putting
the locals on the first page and
tho editorials on the fourth.
Miss Daisy Parrot, who resides
at Jacksonville, Fla., cyme in on
Tuesday for a week or twos visit,
stopping at Mr. G. McGuires.
The work of cleaning out the
canal from Dahlonega to the Bar
low mine by ihe Iowa Gold Min
ing Co., was finished this week.
Rev. II. 1). Pace and family
will leave for Mosey Creek camp
meeting next Wednesday. Tho
camp meeting date is 17—28.
A representative from the Lay
men of the Georgia Baptist Con
vention will be at the Association
in Dahlonega next Friday and Sat
urday.
Rev. Luke Johnson preached a
splendid sermon at the Methodist
church last Sunday night. He is
making an excellent Presiding
Elder.
Wo cannot publish personal let
ters where men are mad at each
ether. If one or both violate tho
law tho court is the proper place,
and not the newspaper, to get sat
isfaction.
At Birmingham, Ala., Bast Sun
day Misses Eva and Mnramie Cren
shaw. daughters of Mr. Acy Cren
shaw, who used to reside at Dah
lonega, were seriously hurt by a
train smashing the automobile in
which they wore riding. Others
were badly hurt and two killed.
If every member of tho church
here would support, none but so
ber men for office they would see
their churches prosper hotter, be
cause it would be an inducement
for a, person to try to do right,
thus setting a good example to the
boys that are growing up and help
to keep them out of trouble. Give
this some thought and look ut the
trouble and expense too much li
quor drinking has already caused
Lumpkin county.
At St. Paul’s Quarterly Meeting,
South Lumpkin Mission, last Sat
urday, the name of Mr. Borders,
an exhorter on that charge, was
under discussion for his affiliation
with the pentecostal order. The
church was lenient enough to bear
with him till the 4th Quarterly
Conference. “No man cau serve
two masters”. The Methodist
church doesn’t ask to strangle tho
zeal of one of its members but it I
asks to direct if one remains with
in its pales.
A couple of gentlemen haviug
an interest in the Coosa mine, lo
cated m Union county, were here
last week in search of some ma
chinery to operate it with. Many
years ago tho vein at this mine
was lost, and efforts after efforts
have been made by different mi
ners to strike it since but without
success until the Sumtnerour boys
of Lumpkin went over to try j
their luck, and before a great)
while their labors were crowned
with success, who today have oue
of the best minus in Georgia j
opened up.

order that lias over been to Dah

and a party of young people, Dr.
G. it. Glenn, tho Dahlonega base
ball loam and others attended on
last Wednesday tho splendid exer
cises of the corner stone laying of
tho new dormitory for pupils at
Murrayville.
Dink Garrett, of this county, was
brought in by the sheriff this week
and lodged in jaii on a warrant
swore out by .John Crawford, of
Dawson, charging him with steal
ing his still. Before the time for
the trial arrived an agreement was
reached for a compromise and tho
prisoner was soon released from
jail and on his way home.
Dr. Glenn and “Undo Barney”
Meadors attended Sunday school
at Trinity church on tho Gall cir
cuit last Saturday and wore tho
guests of Mr. Turner Quillian.
Dr. Glenn made a talk on Ideal
conditions of the youth of the dis
tricts, A good time, a large crowd
was reported anil Dr. Glenn secur
ed three new splendid hoys on the
trip for tho college.
Last Tuesday Dr. Glenn told
Hub Strickland, a young darky
who is staysng with him, to go and
put some guano on lean places iu

Some time afterwards the Doctor
was surprised to learn that the

on tho alfalfa in the barn instead
of on that growing in the patch.
