The state democratic convention
convened in Atlanta yesterday.
There has been 10,728 deaths
from cholera in Russia this year.
The vote in the last
counties will he found
ond page.
In the recent primary there
were polled 17,072 less votes than
in tha governors race of 1008.*
Thomas Edison lias invented the
“Kinctophontt”, a moving picture
machine that causes the pictures
to talk.
The messages sent out by Gov-
ernor Brown and Smith on thoduy
of the election cost them $400
apiece.
Col. Sloan, candidate lor solic
itor, carried Union lust week hy
80 votes. Being the only county
in the circuit that went foj him.
The Macon Telegraph claims
that a majority of the legislature
are for Brown and the News of
that city claims t hat it is for Smith.
An old negro the other dijy hav
ing a few words with n youug
man told the man “1 know I am a
negro tint I live in White county."
Preacher Dunlap, of Atlanta,
introduced n moving picture show
in tho church last week so as to
start a revival. Some of the pic
tures were love subjects.
Our message was wrong last
week about one of Halls represen
tatives. It. was S. K. Christopher
who was elected instead of Adams.
W. 1>. Hawkins, the other repre
sentative, was born in Dahloucga.
An empty dynamite tilled with
sawdust, to which was attached a
sizzling fuze, thrown into a negro
church at Murphy, N. C., the
other night, caused the congrega
tion to get a move on it? No one
seemed to be ready to moot the
Lord.
The forest tires in four north
western states have been very de
structive both to life and property.
Over two hundred persons are re
ported dead and millions of dol
lars worth of property lost. A
friend and former citizen of Duli-
louega in Montana says the whoh
northwest seems to be burning,
filliug the elements with smoke,
and sparks are carried many
miles by the wind.
Pension Commissioner bindsey
has sent out additional instructions
to the ordinaries and those mak
ing out claims will find the follow
ing paragraph of interest to them
likely: “The applicant should
not be allowed to adopt thoir tax
returns valuation as the true cash
value of their property to bring
the valuation within the limit of
the $1,500 fixed by law to obtain
the pension. For it is a well
kuowu fact that the tax valuation
represents about one-fourth and
not over one-third of the cash value
of the property returned. The
correct rule for valuing the prop
erty of the applicant should be
its true salable cash value. Wa
cannot, accept a valuation of lands
from $2 to $5 per acre when such
is worth from $10 to $25 per acre
and would sell for more. Tho
Duhlonogn is unfortunate in be
ing infested with those unknown
tongue people, li seems that they
are not out to win souls to Christ, \
hut like the Ciimbtditcs, to create
confusion in churches and gel |
them to running after a f.id. A |
man came to Birmingham by the
name of Pinson when there wire a
holiness band called the |w>ntc*
costal mission. Ono of them, a
I Mrs.*Uole, had a daughter going!
again | to school in Tennessee who came
| home about that time. She)
professed to have received the gift
of tongues. 1 attended two of
their meetings and got enough. I
town heard that girl cackle very much
[like a hen when a hawk is after
her chickens.
You asked me what I thought
of it. Read the I 1th chapter of
1st' Cor. and see what Paul
thought about it. 1 refer to Math
ew 24:21, Mark 13:22, Luke 17
■I 23, Hob. 13:0. Those latter
.I clay tongues don't seem to ho the
[ same kind as those in the day of
tlie Apostles, for they hud inter
preters, and these don’t under
stand the language themselves.
Neither does any one else. Many
dillciviU foreigners were carried
to hear the Birmingham crowd
and none of them knew anything
about it. 1 believe I read in the
NumA'.T that the man preached in
the unknown tongue. Who was
benefit ted or edified? As for pra y
ing in the unknown tongue is sim
ply impossible. For the fellow lms
to have his mind on his ta, to,
te, te, turn, turn too much to even
have prayer on his mind. The
fact that the preacher holds for a
I certain Anode of water baptism
proves that he ih not a holinoss
man. When a man is wholly sanc-
titied, 1st Thess. 5:23, he loses
sight of all those questions that
difi’oreut denominatians differ
about and recognize that but one
spirit they are all baptized into
one body and are all one in Christ,
iBt. Cor. 12:19.
So 1 believe when a fellow
is going about with a fad you may
put him down as being out of a
job. If that .nun can got forty
or fifty into a church of Ins owu
ho has a life time job as long as
they will support him, for no one
else wauls his job unless it is an
other tramp of his ilk, hut while
such rant and cant annoys and dis
gusts ns, we must not lose sight of
the fact that there is a genuine old
time Holy Ghost religion, such as
was in the days of the apostles.
The Holy Ghost is the third per
son in the God head and he isfdu-
iug his ollice work in convicting
ami converting sinners and sancti
fying believers. Just how a Meth
odist can sneer at the doctrine of
sanctification as a cleansing pow
er, 1 don't understand, as that is
what brought the. Methodist
church into existeuee, and the
new testament is full of it. By
reading Paul's epistles you will
find that he was a holiness preach
er. The dpctl iqe of sanctification
was encouched in his commission
to preach. Read 26th chapter of
Acts, what Jesus said to him when
he was stricken with conviction on
his way to Demascils. Dr. Morri
son publishes a paper at Burns
ville, Ky., called the Pentecostal
Herald that is sane and all right,
lie advises holiness people to stay
in their churches. They have a
holiness convention once a year
with delegates from all over the
south and several states. of the
north. They have hundreds of
consecrate evangelists anil workers
in the field. Several holiness col
leges. And there is the Living
Water, published at Nashville,
Tenn., and many other good pa
pers that will give a world of
light. M. Van Worley.

It might be well enough to state
again that persons who belonged
to the militia or home guard can
not draw a state pension. It is
for those who went to the front.
Mrs. Jacob Wilmcrt, Lincoln,
11!., found her way back to porfcct
health. She writes: “1 selfercd
with kidney trouble and backache
and my appetite was very poor at
times. A few week’s ago 1 got
Foley’s Kidney Pills and gave

great relief, so continued till now

Judge Jones and Judge Kimsey
h^ve tied in the convention having
each received ten votes but Judge
Jones a popular vote majority of
28S. The convention has nothing
to do with a tie and it is not known
what these gentlemen mean to do
about it. Judge Jones carried the
following counties with majori
ties given : Rabun, 15, Towns 116,
Hall 808, Stephens 500. Judge
Kimsey carried these: Haber
sham 14, Union 17, White 194,
Lump kin 13, Dawson 413.

ferred upon me, in nominating me
as Solicitor-General of this Cir

1 have worked hard and haw the
consciousness of knowing that 1
have run a clean race, and tt will
be the supreme effort of my life to
give to yon, by a faithful and im

I did not expect to get all the
votes, as 1 recognize the right of
every one to vote for whom he
chooses, and to those who voted
against me 1 desire to say that I
feel kindly towards them, an)t they
will find that I am impartial in
every respect.
I will assume the duties of the
office ’ feeling the responsibility
thereof, and without any “strings”
whatever tied to me, as 1> have not
made any promises to any lawyer,

expressed i>i my circular letter—
“au impartial, just, sober, faithful
and upright administration.”
Gratefully yours,
