The fib til returns show Smiths i
majority to be 1,255.
The announcement of \V. W.j
Crisson uppi urs in this issue for
sheriff.
Tho increased appropriations j
made by tile last legislature amount
to $000,000 this year.
It cost some of the state house
officers over $2,800 to make the
race in the recent state primary.
When Mr. Smith takes his seat
then Wo will see what his “pro
gressive democracy” means.
But a few, if any of tho mem
bers were returned to the legisla
ture who supported the dog law.
When the wife of a penniless
Confederate soldier owns over
$1,500 the husband cannot draw a
pension.
A Brown man in tho last)’ weeks
(Convention in Atlanta stood no
more chance than a blind dog in a
meat house. No courtesy was
shown thorn whutevey.
The Hoke Smith convention got
up a platform last week as long as
the moral laws, in which Gov.
Browns administration was con
demned in the most bitter tortus.
Two women in Atlanta wore
fined $25.76 by the Recorder last
week for putting on brecehoB, get
ting drunk and riding in a cab
with a cigarrettu in their mouths.
There is talk of permanently
Ihcnting the lino between Georgia
and Tonnessoo, and if it runs
where the Georgia people think it
does, it will givo tho whole of Cop-
perhill and Tennessee Copper fur
naces to our state.
Down at Eatonfcon last week a
negro, upon returning to his homo
found that tho holy rollers had
taken possession by holding a
mooting. He drew his pistol, shot
into the crowd a few times and the
house was soon empty.
Two hundred Georgia citizens
have tiled a bill' in the chancery
court at Benton, Polk county,
Tcun., against the Tennessee Cop
per Co., at Ducktown, asking to
enjoin tho company from operating
its plant, alleging that the timber
and crops are being damaged by
the smoke and fumes.
Judge Jones and Judge Kimsey
tied in counties during tin last
primary for judgeship, but Judge
Junes received the majority of the
popular vote cast, and Judge Kim-
sey has withdrawn from the con
test. So it will he Judge Jones who
will fill tho chair of the northeas
tern circuit.
When the convention convened
to nominate Gov. Brown the re
tiring chairman (a Smith man)
was invited to remain in tho con
vention. No such courtesies were
extended in last weeks convention,
but on the other hand every Brown
delegate were denied nqy part in
the proceeduro by being howled
down.
Tom Watson undertook to make
a political speech in Atlanta one
night Inst week and was treated
very nicely until he got down to
Hoke Smiths pet measure, the dis
franchisement, speaking unfavora
ble of it, which caused such an up
roar by the Smith supporters that
he had to cense talking; causing
fifr. Watson’s friends to crowd
around him on tho stage so that it
nlmost suffocated him, urging the
speaker to continue. For a while
it looked like there would be trou
ble, causing the police to inter
fere. Mr. Watson blamed ox-Gov-
ernor Smith and Congressman
Hardwick with it, saying that he
would have an independent candi-
out against both.

The pentecostal people here aro
claiming to do a lot of tilings by
prayor which is very misleading
to any one who is silly enough to
listen to them. Claiming to be
able to perform miracles, and not
only get messages from tho Lord
but see and talk with Hun. Last
year while a lady was on her death
lied here some of these believers
went and held restoration services
over her but she died. Early in the
spring, when it was very drv the
so called interpreters claimed they
received a message from tho Lord
saying that it wasn’t going to min
any more. But we have had many
cool, refreshing showers and
ground soakers since. Later one
of the believers got sick and heal
ing s'ir-yiees were held over him
but the doctor had to be called in.
Since then they made an effort to
bring a dead baby to life. That
child now sleeps beneath the sod.
Not many days since a man said
his mother would go to hell be

I On Sunday night one, said during
, their services down at Tan Yard
Chapel while “testifying,” that
prayer would open tho prison-
doors and cause the walls to fall.
This was tried by some of the be
lievers here not long ago, but the
door of the jail remained closed
until the sheriff came with the key
to take two of the three prisoners j
to the court house where the judge j
sentenced one to the penitary for
a number of years and the other
was ordered to be separated from
her children and sent out of the
county. The other prisoner got
out by satisfying the claim mado
agaiust him by borrowing and
paying a lot of money. We give
these facts to prove that what tho
peutecostals claim can be done by
them are out of rouson. Yet peo
ple will attend their services just
and j to hear thorn talk and jabber, oc-
jcasioually giving them money
which eucouragee them and helps
i to destroy tho su+’u enough church-
