penses of the state.
One man was fined £. : >0 for but

hundred dollars and cost last week
'for allowing -persons to vote in tho
recent primary, (which lie was
helping to hold) whose names were
not on the registration list.
The following is tho expenses of
tho candidates for governor in tho
recent primary: Walker $350.05,
Brown $8,950.75, Smith $17,590.-
10, $10,489.68' being Mr. Smiths
own mouoy. The rest was con
tributed by his friends.
Wo are glad to learn
friend, Mr. Ed Cooley,
appointed court, stenographer by
Judge Jones next year. Mi
Cooley has held this position for
several years and tilled tho place
with satisfaction to all. Besides
this, he is such a big hearted, clev
er fellowdhafc we are always glad
to have him in our town.
Frank B. Gurry, former Judge
of the Jackson city court, got into
it in Atlanta the other day, caus
ing the grand jury to return a bill
against him for assault with intent
to murder, for shooting at another,
for shooting on a passenger train
and for-cursing in the presence of
ladies and also for carrying con
cealed weapons. Very nice con
duct for a former lodge, isn't it?
Tho excuse for the independent
political movement in Lumpkin
county is because the county nom
inees of tho democratic party fail
ed to file a statement of their ex
pense account with tho clerk of
the Superior court as required by
law. This is a fact. Some of the
candidates were ignorant of this
law while others forgot it and were
a day late. Nevertheless we do
not believe it is any reason why
any one who voted in the pri
mary should ity oft- the track
and get up confusion, the main
reason being because they failed
to get their choice. But few, if
any of the successful candidates
will be before the people any more.
Then will be time enough for
those who want office now, to run,
thus prevent a whole lot of confu
sion, and save a single democrat
fyom being killed politically speak
ing. But you are 21. Do as you
please about it.
