STRAINS OF MUSIC
HELPFUL TO SICK
Certain Airs Proved to Have
Curative Effect.
Doctors hnve long discussed the pos- ;
stble therapeutic powers of music, pos
sibly ever since the Spartans, back in j
620 B. C., if you itnppen to recall, in
vited XlialntcHS, a musician of Crete, j
to hurry over with Id-5 lyre and try to ,
lull to sleep a wild and rnr.Uig pestl
liwc.
And now, In several N'ew York hos- I
pitnls and others throughout the conn )
try it is at last having its chance, ap i
plied with (lie benefit of a new pay- ,
Clioiei y which takes it into eon: liter- ,
Htioll.
Responsible for the present endeav
or to pro-vo the point long debated is i
Xlrs. Isa Maud llscu.
Mrs. llsou is a trained musician and i

nttdhtn Ity hirth and was left a widow I
in her early twenties, at which time* ,
site looked about for a field ami en
tered u hospital irainln;; school, it
was during her early years as a autre '
tlmt she heeame Intel '.ad in the ef
fects of music upon the ill.
"During my that months of hospital
life," she says, “1 felt keenly tlie
gloominess uud the depression. Most
of my time off duty i passed at con
certs, and then 1 began to wonder
about my own craving for music and j
whether the patients did not react to
the same surroundings in ttie same
way.
"I began to take notice, and soon 1
found that very frequently a patient
would ask to hear ‘a piece on the pi
ano.’ Some of tlie youngsters would
ask me when 1 tucked them in at night
to sing to thorn. And some from the
slums would express a desire to hour
a hand-organ.
“Then one night an old Irish wom
an, suffering from Inflammatory rheu
matism. could not get to sleep. De
spite tlie fact that she had been given
‘quantum inifflcit’ of an opiate, she
rolled and tossed and moaned. I be
gun to sing an old Irish tune. Site
quieted immediately and was soon
asleep.
“There are many tjilngs to he con
sidered in tlie introduction among the
lli," she says. “Jazz, for instance,
might have a very impractical effect
In many cases becuuse of Its stimula
tion and shock. In upathetic eases it
might have some value, hut its na
ture is such that It should be used
carefully.
“However, certain musical composi
tions have given very strong indica
tion in experiments of having bene- j
Adsl effects. The quieting, soothing
■trains of Schubert's ‘Ave Maria’ have
proved excellent In cases of insomnia,
for example.
“In other eases of distraught nerves,
and even hysteria, the ‘Barcarolle,’ the
‘Meditation’ from ‘ThnlB,’ MacDow-
eil's To a Wild Rose’ and Mendels
sohn's ‘Spring Soug’ have brought ex
cellent effect. We are still experi
menting with others and are making
steady advances In working out the
psychological effects of various sorts
<*f music.”
