Not Popular With All
“Wo will change your Watch into
a twenty-four-hour watch in a few
minutes,” is the wording of a. pos
ter outside a watchmaker’s store in
the Friedriehgtrasse station, writes
a Berlin correspondent of the Chris
tian Science Monitor. The addition
of an inner circle on the dial, show
ing the figures from thirteen to
twenty-four for the hours from 1
{>. m. until midnight, is necessary,
lie avers, since tho twenty-four-hour
clock has now been introduced by
the railways, post and telegraph,
street car and underground com
panies.
Now, also, the German army and
navy have adopted this clock, which,
it is believed, will lie of advantage,
since it will prevent the recurrence
of errors in the miming of time in
military orders. It cannot be said,
however, that the public is very en
thusiastic about the new clock. It
cannot accustom itself to saying 13
o’clock instead* of 1 o’clock, or 23
o’clock instead of 11 o’clock in tho
night.
Mads Hsolders Realize
They Were a Minority
Wendell Phillips, the abolitionist
ort.tev, once had a disagreeable ex
perience while trying to lecture in
Boston. The majority of his audi
ence was hostile. There was yelling
and singing and this completely
drowned his voice. The newspaper
reporters wero seated in a row‘just
under the platform in the place
where the orchestra plays in an or
dinary theater. Phillips made no
further attempt to address the noisv
crowd, but bent over and seemed io
be speaking in a low tone to the re
porters. By and by tho curiosity of
the audience was excited; it ceased
to clamor and tried to hear what
Phillips was saying to the reporters.
Phillips looked up and said quietly:
“Go on, gentlemen, go cn. I do
not need your ears. Through these
pencils I speak to thirty millions
of people.”
After that, tho persons in the
audience seemed to feel that they
were somewhat outnumbered by the
thirty millions and kept quiet.—

Dream Failed to Sava
When the father of Abbas Kan-
did, condemned to death for tho
murder of two, called on his son in
the Cairo prison, the boy asked that
he appeal to the court of Cassatu
against the sentence. lie said that
ho was sure of acquittal because the
night before in a dream he rode a
white horse and carried a black um
brella which was broken to pieces.
As the lad already was dressed in
the red costume of those condemned
to death, it was too late for. the
father to act.
Something Like Long Life
When Napoleon retreated from
Moscow in 1812, was the last time
Ivan Shapkov, of Lahti, Russia, got
drunk, he told census takers recent
ly when lie gave them proof that he
had been born in 1782. As a young
soldier of thirty years of age, he
helped repel Napoleon’s invasion of
Russia. He is now one hundred
forty-five years old and enjoying
life and good health with his sixth
wife, who is eighty-eight ye:m old.

Mixed Seasons’ Sports
When the mercury reached 80 de
grees at Bear Tond camp, Maine,
on one of those abnormally warm
April days, adventurous bathers
braved the icy waters and wont for
a swim, coming back to shore now
and then for a snowball battle, as
there was plenty of snow along the
shore.

W. W. Daughty of Farmingdale,

Blindi i£S3 Strikes Chamois
Many chamois of the Alps, espe
cially in tho canton of Valais, were
found to have been stricken with
blindness, says tho Pathfinder Mag
azine. Some were found at the
bottom of precipices into which
they had fallen. Others were found
going slowly and stumblingly ever
tho snow. Their eyes were covered,
by a filmy skin, but doctors could
not account for the disease.
Record Journey Made
v by American Indians
Eight Hopi Indians and two
Navajos recently returned to their
reservation at Kaibeto, Ariz., aft
er an eleven-month journey to Aus
tralia nnd New Zealand, where
they aided in the presentation of
“The Vanishing American,” ac
cording to the Los Angeles Times.
The Indians were in charge of
Hugh D. Smith, parson at tho res
ervation, and wero led by Nasjah,
the Owl. They were paid high hon
ors in New Zealand by the- native
Maoris and wore guests at the sa
cred meeting place of that race, tho
first time that any outside people
have been permitted to visit it.
Tho Indians christened Australia
Gwen Bikeyah, or Gwen’s Land,
Nasjah, according to report, hav
ing been smitten by a young woman
of that name in Sydney.
The expedition was a strange one
in many respects. It was tho first
time in history that Ilopis and
Navajos had done anything together
peacefully. Their journey took
them farther than any American
Indians had ever gone, 7,000 miles.
After their return to tho United
States the Indians spent but ono
day in Hollywood before going to
Arizona.

Aid for Aviators
A system has been perfected in
France whereby beacons may bo
lighted by radio. The purpose of
the system is to enable airmen dur
ing the night to use wireless as a
means of lighting distant beacons

of indicating not only tho position
of the airmen, but if necessary il

Really Good Definition
Probably the most complete defi
nition of diplomacy was given by a
little boy in an English class: “It’s
the thing that gets you in trouble,”
lie said, “when a boy bigger than
you has told something that isn’t so
and you tell him so without using
it..”—The Outlook.

Snakes Keep Manila
Homes Free of Rats
Pythons are wont to inhabit
Philippine buildings and, playing
the role of cats, are often welcome
to lodgings above the ceiling. One
grows accustomed to a python’s
blind lunges after the rodents. The
ceiling heaves nnd bellows, the rat
squeaks and the snake dines, then
sleeps. But Manila, has developed
objections to this provincial custom.
JTwo harmless 20-foot pythons with
almost insatiable appetites have
been killed this spring in Manila.
Of course, the city has other snakes,
like tho hostile cobras, that home
in the opera house. They make the
audiences restless sometimes when
the whining of a violin or tho sob of
a cello charms them out of their
lairs. On such occasions musicians
may think Manila unappreciative of
their genius, when, in fact, Manila
is just a little distracted and fidgety
about the snakes, and would, under
other circumstances, respond to tho
music with rounds of applause.
Football Centuries Ago
Football was played in Japan
more than 900 years ago, Arthur
IWnley of the British museum has
discovered. “There is a mention of
football by the *woman Murasaski in
her novel of 923 years ago,” ho said.
“They undoubtedly kicked a ball
about, but I should say that tho
game was materially different from
football ns we play it today.”
Heavy Load for Team

fend two and one-half feet high,
Was hauled by a span of horses

.was hauled easily. In going down

Electric Iron Tragedies
Invited to suggest “new uses for
an electric iron,” 500 housewives
have written to the editor of the
Woman’s Home Companion. The
matter of frying an egg on the bot- ,
tom of an iron is a favorite sugges
tion. One devoted reader burned
the baby’s coat propping up the
iron. Another lady tells of trying j
to warm a bed with an electric iron,
with this result: “Warmest bed you
ever saw—-or smelled; next time I
shall use asbestos sheets.”
