Washington.—All Turkey stayed at
home one Friday recently while 00,000
oilieiuls took 1 lie first census of the
Ottoman empire,
“Turkey lias made up for tardiness
by asking questions far more thorough
than appear in the famous first census
,of history,” says a bulletin from the
'Washington headquarters of the Na
tional Geographic society.
‘“Take ye the sum of all (he con
gregation of 1 lie children of Israel,
alter tlieir families, by the house of
their fathers, with the number of their
names every male by their polls; from
twenty years old and upward, nil that
are able to go forth to war in Israel.’
“Thus spoke the Lord to Moses, and
Moses, with Aaron’s assistance, col
lected the figures for (lie first census
report, which may he found In prac
tically every home and hotel room. It
is appropriately entitled ‘Numbers,’
the fourth book of the Bible.
"By its breadth of scope the census
William of Normandy ordered for his
new kingdom of England, resembles
modern surveys. He commanded his
minions in 10S3 A. D. to record every
lord and peasant, every acre, every
ox, every mill, every manor, every
wei'r and every plow, the value there
of and—this is forward looking—tho
natural resources, woods, fields and
streams capable of development and
revenue. The report lo William the
Conqueror became the Domesday
Book, unreadable today except by
scholars, yet protected in the public
record office at London ns one of the
most precious possessions of England.
Russia’s First Count in 1897.
"The United States, although a
newcomer in (he ranks of civilization,
was one of the first nations to estab
lish the modern periodic census. Swo
llen took l ho lead before our first cen
sus in 1790, but England, France and
[Prussia did not see the necessity of
regular counting of noses until ten or
twenty years Inter. Russia toolc no
census until ISO".
“Deeply religious settlers of Amer
ica nearly upset our first census when
they harked back to another less
fortunate Bible census. ‘Satan stood
ti]v against Israel,’ our ancestors point
ed out lo the marshals, ‘and provoked
David to number Israel from Beershe-
ha even to Dan.’ What happened?
‘God was displeased; therefore lie
smote Israel. The Lord sent pesti
lence upon Israel; and there fell of
Israel 70,000 men.’
“Fears that our first census would
bring similar destruction upon the na
tion did not materialize, so the mar
shals delivered tlioir reports to Pres
ident Washington within nine months
for all the original states, except Ver
mont, Rhode Island and South Caro
lina. Vermont and Rhode Island en
tered the Union later. The marshal of
SontIi Carolina found workers scarce
at $1 per 100 heads counted.
“Today a visitor at the census bu
reau may see the names of famous
Americans and the answers given to
tho first census takers’ simple ques
tionnaires. John Hancock’s family
consisted of two ‘free white males of
sixteen and upward,’ three white fe
males, seven other persons (servants
no doubt) and no slaves. Progress in
70 years presents a contrast with data
for Abraham Lincoln collected in
1SG0: ‘Age, fifty-one, married, law
yer, value of real estate $r>,000—per
sonal estate $12,000, Kentucky, place
of birth.’
“From one census every ton years
the census bureau hjis increased to
101 censuses, in addition to many spe
cial surveys such as that made to sup
ply data to congress for immigration
quotas. One census collected every
Week shows the number of babies
born. Using these figures the bureau
sets up. its large calculator at an ex
hibit and every 20 seconds announces
to the world that the millions of
Americans lias been Increased, for ex
ample, by baby No. 118,972,331.
Statistics About Buying.
“Not content with counting men,
women and children, where they work,
whether they are in school and if so,
how long; not satisfied with tabulatr
ing the value of wheat grown and
tons of manganese ore dug out of the
ground; not resting even with sum
ming up the business of hats and
hammocks, shoes and sulphuric acid
'manufactured in the United States,
1 the census bureau proposes to ‘com-
i plete (lie picture.’ To finish the por-
| trait in figures of the whole United
States, it is necessary, they say, to
have a census of distribution. That
means an accounting of what is sold
to the housewife over the grocery,
drug and meat counters, and of whut
the wholesaler sells to the retailer.
“Recently the census bureau released
its first experimental distribution sur
vey for which Baltimore served as a
laboratory specimen. Tho weavers of

Black Bear Gels His
Annual “Honey Spree”
There is a famous black bear of
tho Rocky mountains Hint comes
down out of his winter hibernating
don on a “honey spree” every spring
"'hen he hears the caretakers gelting
ready to open Many Glacier hotel in
Glacier National park for the summer
tourists. Two years ago he went ram
pant on lus annual “periodical,” broke
into the hotel and smashed dishes
right and left in nil eager kitchen !
rummage for sweeps. Last spring the
caretaker left a gallon of sirup on
the door sill and that sated bruin He
went back up the mountain side
peacefully licking his chops, and \vns
satisfied to cat roofs and herbs for
dessert.
The offering will become n part ot
l he caretaker’s annual expense, since
it is cheaper to end the “sweet tooth”
craving at the doorstep than have
lids audacious “neighborhood” looter
run amuck within Hie building.
Japs Develop Sweet Tooth
Japanese are very fond of soft
drinks and ice cream, and the setting
up of soda fountains is increasing
each year, according to [hillock A.
Butts 1 , Tokyo, commercial attache. It
is believed that there are about 23 to
30 soda fountains in Tokyo alone.
Although this seems to lien small num
ber in comparison with tiie number in
operation in an American city of the
same size, it shows a large gain with
in the last two or three years. Most
of tlie soda-fountains in use at pres
ent are of American make.
Nothing but Whisky
Could Satisfy Indians
That the Indians of a century ago
had a strong distaste for prohibition
is indicated by an article that ap
peared in tho North American Review
in April, 1827, credited to Gen. Lewis
[Cass, senator and secretary of state.
| At the treaty of Chicago, in 1S21,
the conyuAsslouers ordered that no
spirits should lie issued to tho In
dians, and informed them,' in their
own manner, that the bungs were
driven into the barrels. A deputation
of the chiefs was sent to remonstrate
against this precautionary measure,
and at its head was Topnibe, the prin
cipal chief of the Pottawatomie tribe,
a man upwards of eighty years of age.
Every argument was used to convince
them that the measure was indis
pensable; that they were exposed to
daily murders, and that while in a
state of intoxication they were unable
to attend to the business for which
they were convened.
All this was useless and the dis
cussion was only terminated by the
peremptory refusal of the commission-
erg to accede lo their request. “Fa
ther,” said the hoary-headed chief
when lie was urged to remain sober
and make a good bargain for his peo
ple, “Father, we care not for the
money, nor tho land, nor the goods.
We want tho whisky, Give us the
Whisky!”—Detroit News.
Romances of Industry
More than GO subjects involved in
the romantic task of taking wealth

equipment, including portable lighting
facilities that furnish 12,000,000 candle-

One of the illuminating units is a
huge searchlight somewhat Wke that

Early Air-Mail Delivery
What may have been tho first suc
cessful delivery of mail by air was
made 57 years ugo in France. Out of
a funss of mail stamps of famed

Society of America, is one recording
that oil September 23, 1S70, M. Jules

tion of mail stamps includes those
used in many pioneering flights over

GOLF IN DARKNESS
WITH “FLARE” BALLS
It looked at first like a jubilee cele

flare streaked the night horizon of

But these rocket-like streaks wore
nothing oilier than “luminous” golf

In Ids experiments with the lumi

of them within six minutes. Like
