Yes, crime is increasing. (Jap
reason is when a person commitff a
murder, he is charged^with being
a lunatic and has to be tried for
lunacy first.

Objections are being raised
about students of the high schools

We received an article last week
for publication containing two pa
ges and a half of legal si/e paper,
type written, from Jefferson, Ga.,
headed, “Is Democracy Failing?”
Seems to be in Lumpkin county,
as proof of tills fact two republi
cans arc running in the democratic
primary, and one of the latter par
ty (not a candidate but a demo
crat) was asked if he was willing
to accept some money and work
for what they call the “dry com
missioner's ticket. So you see we
are working in harmony in this
part of the vineward.
When Chairman Moore, of the
I
Board of Roads and Revenues re
fused to OK our dollar sta’emeut
for postage used in connection
with the Ordinary’s office, for the
first time in nine years, something
that no ordinary has ever been de
nied before in Lumpkin or any
other county in Gtorgia, Mr.
Moore said: “I have not yet
found any law requiring the coun
ty to pay an Ordinary for any
postage.” This carried,^because
whatever the Chairman says is
law and gospel. We notice
from a report of the Finance Com
mittee some time ago that
they pay Mr. R.C. Menders, Sec
retary of the Board of Rords and
Revenues his postngeb ill. Wher’s
the law lor this? Well, as the
Chairman lias put his seal of dis
approval to our little bill, we will
ask where he found the law for
the Commissioners to appoint a
Policeman for thejeounty before lie
had been a resident of this
county for two .years? The Code
says before a man can hold a coun
ty office lie must be a citizen of
such county not under two years.
And the first of this year the
County Policeman moved his fam
ily into another county while he
stays lie re and boards, goes withlhe
revenue for company, and occa
sionally makes trips with his crew,
who bring in sugar, barrels, ham
mers, buckets, crosscut saws, fun

them to the store, depository for

doesn’t suit him, says the coun
ty was in debt when wo tojk
charge and wo have money in the
Bank, and started the good roads
building in the county, let us talk
a little about it, and get things
straight, as we have a record of
it before us.
When Ordinary Townsend took
clnrg eof the office the bills pre
sented showed that the county
was in debt over $.;oo.oo, besides
outstanding orders of nearly one
thousand doll nrs.
Having a chance to start the
good roads movement by cooperat
ing with government we borrowed
money from Mr. Geo. L Pratt at
crime among youths.
( Bro, Davidson,'of the Cleveland they ate sold at a profit —not for
Courier, is still crying out for a
modern hotel to be built at that
place. Hotels in the mountain
towns are more expense than pvof-
Fhings arc looking mote lively
at the Pyrites Mines than they
have been for some time during
the dark days of winter when but
little in the way of progress
could be made.
We learn that the State High
way has decided to hard finish the
Dahlonega A Atlanta road from
the Davis Bridge a few miles from
Dahlonega to Roswell. Then you
will see people coming anrl going
by onr town at all seasons of the
year, either rain or shine.
The law says that the city school
hoard must be elected by the City
Council of Dahlonega at its
first regular meeting in March ev-
percent interest, and built a hard ery 3 years, timebeing last meeting,
finished road from the county line y et everything else was attended to
to A hapman s store, in the eastern except this important matter, with
part ot the county, includ ng a IK) legal excuse that we have heard
bridge across the creek, and two j 0 f, saying that the council be call-
suialler ones, at a cost of $4933-’j ed together at an indefinite time.
;>3, being half. 1 he government i One cause we learn, was to see
putting up the same amount, being about electing a couple of ladies to
the first federal road money ever
sp.mt in Georgia. There was no
oil tax fund for this or any other
county at that time. Had about 50
m les more roads to keep up then
they have now. Looked after all
and charged nothing. Bought a
truck to null a scrape. Not being
strong enough wc took it off the
county, paid the money back and
later sold the truck to Mr. C. N.
Fitts, no .v our office neighbor. No
expense for car or services what
ever. Wc h id no
purchase of any county supplies
contrary to law unless other mer
chants had a chance. Had no Po
liceman to go visit distilleries and
seize any and everything to be
found at the place, meal, sugar,
overalls, coats, etc., contrary to
Haw, and swear out warrants for
people at a big expense to the
comity. The revenue did this and
violators were tried in U, S, court,
costing the county nothing.
Having received a letter from
Judge Patterson, Chairman of the
Highway Board, in Nov. 1D17,
asking how much money was de
sired to complete the Brockton
road from near Chapman’s store to
Dahlonega we called some prom
inent citizens together to talk over
the matter. A second meeting was
held. And a bond election May
0, 1919. Result—for bonds 589;
against 2S. Sold for more than
serve on the Hoard. This will be a
very difficult matter, because mem
bers of this school board have to
be freeholders, and the lady free
holders in Dahlonega are very
scarce. Another report is that its
indefinite postponement was done
so some of the members of the
council will be away so the others
can select the board to suit them
selves. New a dance or a ball
game can b,e postponed, but the
date of this school board is fixed
store for the j by tlie jegisla lure, and it is a dan
gerous proposition for the City
Council to change it, because it
might give the Board elected at a
different time than is specified by
law trouble to perform the duties
legally. The law fixes a date lor
the election of county officers. In
j Lumpkin we have no candidates
for Coroner or County Surveyor.
Would it be legal for any body of
tnPn to postpone the election indef
initely and wait and hunt up a
candidate to fill these offices to suit
any particular person? No. Well,
the same state law fixed the day
and date for both. And if either is
changed the legislature has to do
it.
it iu the winter season. And since
the construction of good roads
many visitors bring their dinners
and after spending a few hours in
the mountains return homo by

drummers. They used to come
and spend one night at least in
Dahlonega. Now they can work
several towns in a day and be back
at home before night.
