A Narrow Escape.
The following clipping from the

of interest to many of our readers:
“Mr. A. II. Henri, a mining
mctalurgic.il engineer, of Denver,
Colo., is spending a few days in the

Mr. Head has been for the past
eighteen months in charge of the
Bonanza Mines Company in Nicar
agua. The property was produc
ing about $10,000 per month in
low grade bullion which had to be
transported 28 miles with oxen
from the mill to the river and 25o
miles in a small boat 16 feet long
down the river to seaport. The
bullion was put in an iron safe,
locked and sealed, and a do-foot
rope with a float on the end was
| tied to the .safe so in case the boat
| sank the safe could be recovered,
j The ore averaged about $8.oo per
ton and was worked with tunnels
with a crew of eighty men mostly
natives. The company had their
own hydro electric plant mul mill
and used stamps and ball mills for
reducing the ore and recovered
the bullion with the cynide pro
cess.
Two weeks ago a native came in
riding an ox and reported that
Sandino with 200 followers would
be there in two hours and that he
intended to torture the Americanos
in charge and make them deliver
all the gold and clean up what was
in the tanks and zinc boxes and
then kill the Americanos and de
stroy the property. Head and the
other Americans left immediately
and Sandino arrived two hours la
ter. Head hid his trunk in the
brush and came down the river
i“>o miles in a small boat and ship
ped to New Orleans without a
coat. He considers himself lucky
to be alive ami says enough is
enough. No more Nicaraugua for
him.”

We wouldn’t advise tourists to
go b.y Porter Springs to Neel’s

and the road is very rough. The
toad is all right from Dahlonega to
Porter.
Sheriff Housley returned this

The Tax Assessors during their
first sitting here reduced the re
turns made by some, while those
made by others were raised. This
shows how carefully these officials
are handling the scales of justice.
We are requested to state that
conference will be held at Concord
church next Sunday afternoon at
2 130. All members aro requested
to be there and the people of the
entire community ate invited to
come.
As Enon church, ever in Mar
tin's Ford District, has been glow
ing cold since Rev. J. N. Fitts, its
Pastor, passed away, we are re
quested to state that a big rally
will be held there the first Sunday
in June and fVn effort made to put
new life in this church. Rev. VY.
T. Dowdy will preach there that
day.
Both men and women in the
country are now busy working
on the farm making something to
live on. While some of the young
men here in town are playing ball
which is no benefit to tho body,
mind or stomach. One brings
about peace aud plenty. While the
other creates nothing except lazi
ness.
A gentleman from Macon last
week said that lie was told bafoio
lie left home that he could get
board her e at one dollar per day.
Could once when beef was eight
cents a pound, three dozen eggs
for a quarter, big fry size chickens
15 cents a piece, a large gobbler for
73 and a women to cook them at a
dollar a week. But times have
changed. One pound of steak
will cost about half as much now
as half of a grown turkey did
t hen.
The other day while W. T. An
derson, editor of the Macon Tele
graph and President of the compa
ny was in our office, upon learn
ing that the editor of the Nugget
had been Ordinary three terms and
married over one hundred couples,
enquired if we kissed the bride
like the 0:10 performing the cere
mony used to do, and it we didn’t
why? As there were some ladies
present we felt too modest to tell
Mr. Anderson then, but will now.
Years ago it was a rare thing for
a iy one to marry a couple except
a minister. Everything word
along all right until a husband
caught a. preacher kissing l.L wife
a month or so after tlie first public
buss, which caused kissing brides
at their marriage tc be dispensed
with.
