Over in Banks county last week
a revival was postponed for a
week until the peachos could be
looked after.
Wo notice that Mr. Turner, of
White, is in the Sanitarium and
wifi not be able to make the race
for the senate.
If everybody were as particular
about religion all through the year
as they are during a campaign we
would have better and more pros
perous ehurchec.
Last Monday when the state ex
ecutive republican committee met
in Birmingham, Ala., the anti-Al
Smith democrats were ordered to
leave the conference.
The recent Roods affected more
than half of Georgia, causing
heavy losses and nine deaths, five
in North Carolina, Hvo in South
Carolina and two in Dominion.
If there is anything wrong with
the democratic platform Gov.
Smith is not to blame for it, be
cause it was framed and adopted
before any one was put in nomina
tion for president.
Up in St. Louis this week the
tossing of a lighted cigarette at
ttvo sleeping children and an argu
ment oyer a dice game at a church
bazar led to a fist fight In which a
ly-year-old girl was beaten to
death. What will St. Peter say
ghoul this?
When you go to vote for Presi
dent think of this: The republi
can party at Kansas City adopted
a plunk in its platform approving
the Dyar anti lynching bill which
would inflict a federal tine of ten
thousand dollars on any and ev
ery county in which a lynching is
committed, the fine to be paid to
the family of the man lynched.
This bill wo^ld 9511150 innocent
people to suffer by, such heavy
taxation and break up a small
county like Lumpkin should such
a thing take place.
The Independent Oil and Finan
cial Reporter, published at Fort
Worth, Texas, says: “Of course
it was polite of the Texas bootleg
gers to apoligize to the consumers
for raising the price of whiskey
and other liquors during the Dem
ocratic convention. They ga ! 'A that
the drouth was greats; y nan
had anticipated anc j as a conse-
C^UfehCG ’.'bl enough supplies were
provided. They explained furth
er to the delegates, and prohibi
tion advocates assembled that they
had thought 3,000 cases would be
sufficient but that the consumption
by the thirsty patriots was greater
than had ever been known in the
South. So it seems that the 36,-
000 quarts of whiskey, augmented
by what the local illicit distilleries
could produce was not enough to
keep the ardent advocates of bone
dry planks sufficiently stimulated
to stick to their pious task. Prob
able the two wettest spots in
America since prohibition went
into effect was Kansas City and
Houston during the two recent
conventions. Both conventions
adopted dry planks and many
were the high sounding speeches
and much earnest ai d prayerful
endeavor was spent .11 I eln-.li of
prohibition. Foreign observers
and representatives of 1 ublicatioi..
will write us down as a nation of
hypocrites who talk and some
times vote dry hut act and drink
wet. ’ ’

Just as soou as the storm ceased
last week our farmers resumed,
their cabbage hauling to Atlanta
The prices being good.
A few days ago when Mrs. New
man returned to Fort Pierce, Fla.,
the worst of the storm was over,
but found things in bad shape.
The windows of her home were
blown out, the floor covered with
water and tilings in bad shape.
We are told that the heavy rains
washed the “furniture” of one dis
tillery away in our county
during the freshet, raining so hard
in the night that the proprietor
couldn’t get to his place of busi
ness, being wet work all around.
There are ain’t, aren’t and isn’t,
words with about the same num
ber of letter*, and the editor of the
Nugget uses the one which comes
the handiest, which may not be
grammar every time, but those
who read the Nugget will under
stand what we mean.
It looks like the “Sous of Rest”
who occupy the court house yard
every day except when it rains,
would keep the ground cleaned
off for the use of it. A Florida,
gentleman remarked last week
that the building was interesting
to visitors but all around the build
ing showed neglect.
You will notice that the North
Georgia Power and Electric Go.
are advertising an application for
charter this week, with the expec
tation of putting everything in
good shape, spreading out and do
ing a big profitable business. It
lias made arrangements to furnish
our sister town Cleveland with
electric lights. Then Bro. David
son can throw bright lights oil
the press when he goes to run
otf the Courier.
Our farmers are receiving a dol
lar per dozen for their cabbage in
Atlanta, and no taxes to pay mat
ters not where they are raised.
The citizens of Atlanta and
Gainesville arc glad for fruit and
stuff to be brought to their mar
kets matters uot where it is pro-
ticed. It is different in Dahlone-
ga. In case a man drives into the
place with a load of melons, peach
es, Ctc., 19 S?! 1 he is appre-YJhsd to
see about taxes, causing dealers (0
about quit eomiug to town. No
wonder sc many peOplo go ofi' to
trade. And if it continues this
TCay another year our citizens will
have to go to Gainesville to buy
their peaches to can, being 70
cents cheaper in the bushel than
they can be had here.
Some days ago a gentleman was
here looking for a house In or 'neat-
enough Dahlouega to lie could
send a portion of his children to
the Graded School and one to Col
lege. Also to rent some land so
he could farm while they attended
these institution* (<f learning. Do
uot know whether be succeeded.
A few winters ago this farmer left
Union county and located down in
Florida. The climate was delight
ful and country beautiful, causing
the new resident to think that lie
had found a country of sunshine
and happiness for himself and fam
ily to dwell in the rest of their
days. But alas. When spring
opende up and the weather
grew warm these mountain people
began to fed dull aud bad. Soon
getting enough of Florida he mov
ed up inso South Georgia, think
ing it would be better. But here
his family took malaria. The far
mer says that Florida and South
Georgia any be all right for those
used to the country but it doesn’t
suit mountain people who have
(breathed pure fresh air. This is
| why this family raised in the Blue
, Ridge Mountains want to get back
j where they can enjoy life.
The nmv company will begin
putting the electric lines in tip top
shape ns soon as the poles come.
They will he thirty and forty feet
long, creosoted mid when put up
will bo above the trees and then
last for years.
Since tbo toilet lias been install
ed at the court house and warm
drinking water supplied the '“Sons
of Rest” are very much delighted
because they can get in full time.
The only complaint is now the au
thorities do not supply them with
ice waiter.
Even those having water in their
homes here had better keep their
wells in shape in case the ice wag
on breaks down, a dry time comes
in the summer or fall, or a freeze
happens during the winter, or
any of the people run short of mon
ey to pay for style.
We have received a copy of the
State Treasurer’s report ending
Dec. 31st, 1JD7. Also the Comp
troller Generals. The latter gives
the amount of general taxes paid
into the state treasury by each
county, together with an itemized
statement of money received from
the Tax Collectors for special tax
es of every nature, which we wish
to publish later on when we have
time to get it up.
Mr. C. R. Folsom, of Jackson
ville, Fla., after spending, a couple
of weeks in company with his
wife, returned home last Friday.
The gentleman did not seem to be
very much pleased at the start but
after getting acquainted with the
editor of the Nugget and rambling
about over the hills and mountains
‘seemecbto.be very much delight*
fed. Before departing came down
and subscribed for the Nugget'and
informed us that he expected to. re
turn to Dahloncga next summer
and spend his vacation here again.
It is going to be a difficult mat
ter to keep the interior of the court
house here looking nice unless
those entering it will reduce the
size of their chews of tobacco and
spit less. The other day during a
trial some one spit so much on the
wall of the hall that the workman
had fo repaint it. In some coun
ties the judges require a line from
hose who are so careless or
thoughtless as to do this. Anoth
er way would be for a recess to be
given so the jury and others could
go out in the open occasionally
and take a chew and spit.
When a poor woman, whose
character is a little stained, comes
and wants to work to make a
living, a movement is made to run
her out of town. Why uot in
clude the men if they are goiug to
purify the place? They are the
SP’CS to blame mostly. Let a poor
woman of our country be driven
oil with her little children to suf
fer, and at the same time meet at
the churches, pray for the widow
and the orphans, aud collect mon
ey for fatherless and motherless
children in other towns and cities,
ar.d rrrtchihg OUt with help for peo
ple in foreign Qcountiios without
making any enquiry about the wo-
men’s character likd they do he.e.
Where is there any religion about
this?
There is a young fellow in our
county who has a sweetheart and
they each use snuff, the young man
furnishing it. They both live in the
cniirryfive miles apart. Last
Saturday he vveut to the store and
bought two extra boxes of Rooster
Snuff, being the kind they have
been using during their courtships.
The next day afternoon the fellow
dressed up, drove over with the
intention of spending the remain
der of the day in a lover’s snuff
.lipping. But upon arriving and
reaching after his choice snull
found that lie had left it in anotlie
co.at pocket. Of course it is use-
lt.1, lw that the owner of tie
snuff' was soon back at home with-
both boxes in his pocket return
jog, but to his sorrow had ou’y
gotten a little piece when his tar
broke down, preventing any io\e
words being exchanged between
the tsvo that day, disappointment
being caused by the absence of two
little boxes of snuff, which may
have delayed a wedding.
