Los Angeles, California, report
ed another quake last week.
Editor Williams’ advice is to
make every day Labor Day.
The political speakers are now
taking a rest, some of them trying
to repent of their sins.
The heavy rains last week did a
lot of damage throughout the
state to the farmers.
The state and county fairs will
be the next thing on the progam,
and that big old hog will be soen
again at many if it is not dead.
Paper would soon get scarce and
the price greatly advance if
every lie told in the campaign just
closed could he recorded, besides
give a lot of stenographers employ
ment.
Since the treasurer of the Bap
tist Missionary fund has gone es-
tray we judge that the editor of
the Christian Advocate will have
something to write and think
about besides Al Smith.
The editors of the Dalton papers
have been shown an egg turned
out by a Whitfield county lien
with the letter li on it. The sup
position is that this hen and egg
will he on exhibition at the next
state fair.
We read Sunday where a conn
ty policeman picked up a similar
officer from another county who
had six quarts of liquor, the de
fendant claiming that he was car
rying half of it to a brother with
typhoid. Meat for him to bathe in,
we suppose.
We notice that women and girls
in Chicago began a new fad last
week by throwing away their
stockings and going barelegged.
If it wasn’t so far we wouid go
and pick up some ofjthe smallest
size to keep our shanks warm du
ring the coming winter.
A prominent bootlegger up in
Philadelphia was required to
give a #100,000 bond last week.
He headed a gang that used ma
chine guns, silencers, shotguns
and other weapons to resist and
commit murder when attacked
in their wholesale business.
An anti-Smith preacher was egg
ed a few nights before the election
down in Alabama while making a
speech, But haying seen so many
eggs on a dish before him, did not
get alarmed when he saw them
coming through the open windows
at him. But it is all over now.

carried Pumpkin county. But
from a radio message just received
it looks like Cov. Hardman has
carried the stale.
The Athens Banner-Herald has
this to say, which is the truth:

one that seems to he on iho in-

All \vli,u have thick breeches—
we mean males, will soon have to
hunt them up.
We understand that Mr. W. M.
Wehunt has been appointed Game
Warden for Lumpkin county.
It costs so much to buy a coffin
now that a poor person cannot af
ford to die if they could help it.
Reading of so many losing their
lives within the past few days
by taking a high flight we have
hacked out buying an airplane.
It is a rule of a newspaper not
to publish anything sent in unless
the name accompanies it. Name
not to be told or published by the
editor but for his protection.
We have had some fine weather
this week, drying oil the roads so
the autoist can run his car where
he pleases as fast as he wants to.
Or an editor like ourselves without
a car, can foot it.
Uncles Dunk Ilollifield and John
Sain, two old Confederate soldiers
residing in onr county, are in a
bad shape. Both have smothering
spells when they liedown and have
to sit up to sleep.
Quite a number from Lumpkin
county have been working on the
big dam at Wetumpka, Ala , for a
long time, which is about comple
ted, and several have returned
home or gone elsewhere.
City Marshal Watson is busy
collecting up the street and sanita
ry taxes. While City Treasurer
Boh Meaders is taking in the gen
eral taxes. All are required to be
collected by the first of next
month.
A young lady visitor came down
Saturday and bought eight copies
of the Nugget, saying that some
of them would reach California.
This paper has been road every
week in Florida for several years.
But we are pleased to have others
sent.
Some time back Tal Odum of
Lumpkin county, was given a sen
tence of I2 months and a day i
U. S. prison for violating the li
quor law. But afterwards the
court agreed to let him off by pay
ing two hundred dollars. Not
raising the money lie was recently
ariested and carried to prison to
begin his sentence.
We have learned the reason
why there were noauloists passing
through Suhday. It was on ae
count of the article that was in the
Atlanta Constitution saying it was
impossible to drive through to
North Carolina. One gentleman
said he thought he would try it,
or come us far as ho could, who
made the tiip without a bit of trou
ble. After a rain ceases in this
section the roads soon dry off.
Some are nnder the impression
a stock law election can be held
in any of the mountain districts by
a petition being signed by ten le
gal voters of any such district and
presented to the Ordinary who lias
to call it. It will he seen trom the
Acts of the legislature of lp27 that
no single district can hold a stock
or no fence law’election. Must be
three adjoining districts in the
mountains.
We ate informed that one man
in Wuhoo District started out to
do carpenter’s work. After com
pleting a neighbors smoke house
decided to cover his own dwelling.
One of his neighbors otlered to
swap work and help him. The
reply was would cover it himself,
then when he got done I10 would
be done. At noon the man asked
this same neighbor to help. He
The student who plays the fid

We have been printing a lot of
letterheads. Do you want any?
J. II. Jenkins is going to he it
candidate for member of the Com
missioners of Lumpkin county.
Miss Sidny Roberts was hurt
pretty had tlie other day when she
went to stop olT of a car.
Mrs. W. F. Wimpy, Route 1,
will have a sale on Saturday after
noon tlie 22nd inst, beginning at
2 o'clock.
The baptizing at Mt. Pisgah will
take place next Sunday at the usu
al place near the Power Plant at
10 o’clock.
Mr. G. L. Pratt and two of the
Messrs. DeGees, of Atlanta, were
pleasant visitors to our office lost
Wednesday.
Some are using snuff on cabbage
to get rid of the worms. Just
think about people using a stuff in
their mouths that kills worms.
Thousands of acres of laud in
Lumpkin are being traded to the
government, which will make a
considerable difference in her tax
returns.
All candidates expecting to be
voted for at the general election
are required by law :o send their
names into the Ordinary thirty
days before it is held.
Those sending in births and
deaths to the Ordinary from the
country had better use a two cent
stamp. It is a violation of the
Postal Laws to send by mail any
written matter with a one cert
stamp.
Uncle Lain Mote, of Yahoola,
was here Monday for the first time
in quite a while, seeing about sell
ing part of his mountain land to
the government. Uncle hum is
78 and doesn’t travel about much
now.
Sheriff Crawford, of Dawson
county, was here Monday to see if
any one would sign a bond of one
hundred each for Don'.Howell, for
merly of Dahlouega beiug drunk
and having a pistol while passing
through that county the night be
fore at I2 o’clock a foot from At
lanta. No one signed it here. But
a friend in Atlanta did.
A card received from Mr. La-
peau, Mechelen, Belgium, of the
30th lilt., says: “In order to be
come acquainted with your news
paper, may I have one or two fam-
ple copies of Same and obtain sub
scriptiou price for Belgium, Eu
rope, six months and one year in
American currency?” Price of
Nugget to this point: Ninety
cents for six mouths, or $1.75 for a
year.
The First Year 4 II. Club girls
of the county will have their can
ning and sewing exhibit at J Ste
phens Library Tuesday afternoon,
September 18'h. On account of
so much rain some of the gardens
did not do so well and their ex
exhibits will be iewer in number
as a consequence. Everybody is
invited to visit the Library duriug
the day. Mrs. Mize, State Home
Demonstration Agent. Miss Ed
wards, State District Agent, and
.Miss Collier, Club Girls Agent,
will he the judges. One of these
ladies will probably speak to the
ladies at 3 oclock.
When three women get mad at
each other the devil is to play. So
the devil was played over near the
