The Mayor of Fort Valley slash

a life sentence for having been

a sentence is out of reason, which
authority should not be given any

We are glad to learn that Capt.
A. C. Stringer has 'been appoint
ed Warden of Hall by the Prison
Commission of Georgia, to suc
ceed Capt. M. B. Waldrip, who re-

hear of his success.
The Oglethorpe Echo is of the

Up in Ohio a man received a
letter from 1 soap company stating

for every name received. This

suggest that application be made

In reference to county police
men to enforce the prohition law
or trying to, the Augusta Herald
is opposed to it on acco.nt of the
great expense to the county The
paper says: The Herald wants to
see the prohibition law enforced in
this territory, and for that matter
throughout the country, but we
do not feel like a rich government
should call upon a poor county to
render such service that is plainly
the government’s duty to perform.
If the federal officers—or rather
the one officer—needs any help in
Richmond county, then we say
that it is the sheriff’s duty and
right to assist them to the limit.

We observe that the representa

to introduce a bill for each district

missioner, and one of them to look
after such work as is reported by
each commissioner to be most need
ed. Why would not something
like this be a good law for Geor
gia.

law is defective by which Manley,
the wholesale bank buster, was
tried. Had it been a negro chick
en thief, or some poor fellow kill

Walker, the second bank bsliter

cle Bob Sutton, died in the upper
part of this county last Saturday,

Sam Davis, colored, died here
last Monday. He was industrious
while enjoying good health, and
had saved up enough money to
put him away. Was harmless and
peacable. "
Our office porch was visited by
a grasshopper Monday afternoon.
This is the latest we ever saw a
’hopper out before It must have
heard the editor singing at d

The time has passed without
any new person filing notice with

for Sheriff Hotisley to come and
help catch Nevit Watkins, but as
the Sheriff was attending court in
Gainesville County Policeman Da
vis went but failed to get the out
law. Watkins appeared at the
home of one of the Andersons
across the Blue Ridge—think it
was West—during his absence
last Saturday while lie was full of
prohibition drops, run his wife and
children off, poured kerosene oil
on the house, set it a fire and the
building was soon in ashes and ev
erything in it. In addition to this
killed aud skinned the fatten-

charged in some manner, the ball
passing through his liver and lodg
ing in the back. Notwithstanding
his serious condition he walked u
distance of two miles to the t road
at the old toll gate and when he got
to a house or was found, could not
talk above a whisper. Mr. Har
kins was alive at last accounts.
Ed Worley, now in Atlanta, w^o
is always happy and makes every
one pleasant wherever lie goes,
while up on a visit to his old home
town here last week, went over
into Hail county Saturday night,
together with Frank Wimpy aud
others, to join a large crowd with
many dogs in a big fox chase—one
which had been caught, saved aud
turned loose for this occasion.
Where persons not suffering too
niuch with old age there is noth
ing of any more pleasure for them
to meet together this way, drink
sweetened water and hear the dogs
bark on it run. All past troubles,
if any, are forgotten.
And old friend of ours inform
ed us n few days ago that he had
not drank any for several months
and had about decided to quit it.
We asked him what had brought
about such a change. Said the
last time Ik went tip on the Blue
Ridge with a party he sat up per
fectly straight and drove his team.
But got hold of some liquor and
drank so much that upon return
ing had to give up the lines, take
a resting position in the hard wag
on bed and came down the moun
tain tail foremost. And when
reaching the corporate limits the
present driver had to spread some
thing over him so they could get
in home without tile Marshal see
ing him. Several did but thought
the wagon was partiully loaded
with pork. .
