The town of Plainvillc, Ga., was
almost wiped out by fire a few
nights ago.
Three ministers In a wreck near
Mantfield, Ga., last week. This
accident can’t be charged to liquor
but mud manufactured by rain and
maybe too fast driving over a bad
road.
Congress is having a cold sitting
up in Washington at this season of
the year, yet one prohibition talk
er wants the body to passalaw to
make it a felony for any one to vi
olate the dry low.
We sec where several persons
have lost their diamonds and jew
elry yalued at from one to four
thousand dollars by the slick
hands of of thieves. It keeps us
uneasy about ours.
Rev. W. F. Jordon, the min
ister iu Raleigh, N, C., has just
been freed from the pen after hav
ing served thirteen months. Wo
do not know whether lie will re
sume preaching and discuss poli
tics or not.
Some of them are requesting the
governor to call an extra session of
the legislature. There must be a
little money in the treasury. II

We noticed one town in Florida
receutly where they bad five fires
in a week caused by sparks from
the chimneys. Three of the build
ings were a total loss. IIow easy
these fires could have been avoided
by burning the chimneys out when

adopted for Georgia for the next

One member in congress intro

emergency. Must be expecting

Sherman and Hugh Lowe, of
Auraria District, were lodged in
jail the other night charged with
visiting the home of their broth

Officer Davis informed us Mon
day that he got two stills the pre
vious day. One in the Western
part of the county. And the oth
er of 100 gallons capacity, up in
Hightower District. There was
110 oue in waiting at either place.
Mr. D. Parks, who lias been up
at Akron, Ohio, at work for some
time, recently returned home to
stay at least for a while. It is a
cold country as they have already
had a lot of snow, being unpleas
ant fora person from this section.
Officer Wallace and two or three
other non resident officials were
here Monday after a raid. We
learn that they visited Mill Creek
District. The still was out of
place but seized a crosscut saw,
captured a car and twenty gallons
of liquor.
The lights are getting weaker
on account ot the dry weather and
low water. The Company has
many hands at work, as we have
stated before, getting the power
transferred here from Seabolt
Shoals, which will be accomplish
ed in a short while now.
The Lumpkin County Commis
sioner’s last, regular meeting was
held Monday niglit for the
present year—that is the regular
meeting day. But adjourned over

theless they have our best wishes
for their success.
A portion of last week was regu
lar hog killing weather causing a
number of our citizens to butcher
theirs and are today enjoying
themselves eating hogs head and
fatty bread. As well as many in
the country. We are glad to hear
of so many of our citizens begin
doing like they used to—raise
their own meat and keep the mon
ey at home. There has been too
much money sent away for stuff
that could be made and raised at
home.
Years ago Mr. John M. Y.hel-
chel left Dahlonega, his native
home, and located at Anniston,
'Ala., an active young man enjoy
ing good health. lie secured a
position there as letter car
rier, and continuously for thirty-
five years he trudged along
the streets and sidewalks of that
city until the I71I1 day of Novem
ber last was retiled on a pension at
the age of sixty-seven, with weak
legs and in bad health generally.
He performed his duties well and
will be greatly missed, with much
regret as will be seen by the fol
lowing letter he received on the
16th nit., from the Postmaster and
Postal employees: “We note with
sadness that tomorrow forever sep
arates you from us so far as being
listed as an employee of the office,
but we truly hope we shall not be
separated in heart and mind. As
we recall your years of faithful
service side by side with us we
come face to face with many pleas
ant reminders of happy days to
gether, and though we have miss
ed you and will continue to do so,
we want, to extend congratulations
and good wishes for a long, happy
and prosperous retirement. We
have mailed you today a small
token of oik remembrance and
sincerely hope you will derive
many times the pleasure from it
