There i« a big difference in a bad cold and the flu. This you will realize when the latter strikes you. little girl ten cent A nineteen-year ol(L girl is held cry do for highway robbery cU)wn in Flor ida. Now what do you think of this? More schools were closed in ot li ber states last week on account of the flu which continues to rap idly spread over the country. If a murderer in Georgia was to go to the electric chair from the first court trial wouldn’t it be a great saving to its people? There are thousands of cases of flu in the Carolinas. At Climson college thetc were 25o of the stu dents who.had it before the scliooi closed. We notice that a Canadian news paper estimates that the United Stales have left the coffers of that country $300,000,000 this year for stimulants. Right nice little sum. The 1,000 saloons in Kansas City are considerably stirred be cause a Bick lady arose from her bed, picked up the hatchet, went into an adjoining building and burstej up the bar outfit. Black, of New Representative York, has introduced a bill in con gress to permit the sale of beer and light wines in states wanting it, and to provide against more strin gent laws against the sale of li quor. Girl suspects have been ar rested as being in a plot to dyna mite a train Mr. Iloovar was on during bis plensuie trip. If wo men get to domg this what can be expected to become of the coun try? We see that a plea is being made by some of the la .ies to congress men for the females to be given equal rights with the men. If this is done we judge the men will have to help wash the dishes, make up the beds and sweep out the houses. As soon as Walker, who was once president of more than 100 banks, was moved to Bibb county jail he remarked, “1 have found God at last.” It was fortunate for him to get this transfer if he Mrs. Brooksher lias a fine line of Christmas goods. Toys atul dolls for everybody. Every who buys a doll gets a present. The discharge of 10 inspectors by Commissioner ot Agriculture Talmage without cause or a chance to be heard, is illegal, says the su preme court. The State University suspended last week on account of the flu and unable to obtain nurses. Numbers of other institutions in the south have had to suspend on account of this dreadful disease. The man at Cleveland, Ohio, who claimed that Mr. Iloover had not been in tho United .States long enough to take his seat, is in jail charged with lunacy. We guess he will be a goner—to tho asylum. One of the defendants irl the Adair suit in the U. S. Coiftt, at Gainesville, took the flu arid had to be dropped out of the case for a while. It’s enough to make all the defendants sick. It is estimated if the changes suggested, mentioned last week, arc carried out, that it will save the state between seventy-five and a hundred thousand dollars. This has reference to the changes re commended by Mr. State, State Auditor. Doran says it will take $300,- 000,000 a year to dry up the Uni ted States. Which causes editor Shope. of the Daiton Citizen to ask: ‘‘Arc the people of the Uni ted State willing to out up this amount? One of the greatest troubles is that many of those who insist that it is are the ones who pay nothing more than a poll tax.” The County Commissioners of Baldwin county decided last week to drop the work of convicts on the roads and use free labor. Con vict labor on the roads in the win ter is more expense than profit. Because they are to feed and guard during rainy days. When the free laborer is no expense unless he works and pays his own doctor bill when lie gets sick. ‘ E. D. Monton, Effingham coun ty’s game warden, was shot to death recently by W. II. Faulk as a nsult of a quarrel over some fishing nets on theOgeechee river. Before the game law went into tf- foct no trouble was ever heard about fishing or hunting, much less people being killed about eith er, and there was plenty of game and more fish than'' people had time to hunt or catch. We have alieady gotten our new We trust that everybody will leaf turned over—don’t owe any- stay sober and everything will thing. There are a lot of people here and in the county housed up with the flu or colds. Mr. Joe Avery paid South Geor gia a flying visit recently, and a portion of Florida. The big square dance comes off at l’ortcr Springs on Chrislmasevo night, and not Christmas night. Mr. C. S. Woody has moved back to his old home near Auraria from Murrayville, so he can return to gold digging. Mr. BeiuWimpy has been suffer* ing"much ' witliVtonsil litis ^but is improviug’atid we hope he will soon be up and out. One wi.fe locked her husband out the other night when be ca'me home drunk. Right good way to reform a person on a cold nfght. H.'F. Parks’ Commission has been’held up by the Governor tin* til he can investigate his qualifica tions as member on County Board. A number of our patrons sub scriptions to the Nugget are out this week. If it is. wished to be continued they know what to do. Mrs. Sallied West, nee Miss Sal- lie Price, who went from Dalilone- ga, was hero for half an hour or so one day this week from Pittsburg, Pa. Prof.-Ruga wishes to learn the weight of the other hogs he is in terested in in our county for which lie furnished the money for the purchase of the pigs. At Davis’ Chapel Saturday night the box supper was a success— $loi.71. The cakes brought $41.75 and were cut by Misses Edith Brackett and Coro Waters. It was our pleasure last Monday to meet Mr. Win. Baffler, of Washington, in Dahlonega. The gentleman is operating the Baggs Branch Mine near Auraria Is now putting up a stamp mill to crush the ore like the natives used , 1: ur i to do. is not mistaken. But anybody is liable to be some times. In south China the imported western clothing for students in the schools have been abandoned by the Cantor, government. Now if they would abandon the use ol our money and quit listening to instructor sent over there it would be a great blessing to the United States people. . The barrooms seem to be wide open in Kansas City, favorable to the authorities from ali accounts as the Sergeant says he lias made 3,000 arrests this year and only 10 persons have been punished either by jail sentences or fines. This would be a good place for a fellow in a dry town to go and wet hir lips. • 1 J There was a big crowd at the box supper at the court vhouseUhe other night and every one.enjoyed themselves because thefe was something on the program to please ,bpth okl and young. The total amount realized was $143.50 odd cents. The cake bronght •f5o.2f) and was cut by Miss Car ol Taylor, of Dawsonville. We notice where a girl, who says she loaned a DeKalb county preacher, more than $3,000 when they were engaged .and she be lieved he was going to marry her. But soon after lie was accommoda ted she lost his false love and her money too, who now instead of calling him darling sugar babe, us es a shorter and more appropriate ea name—old devil. We have often said when preachers are mean they are tlie meanest people in the world—far ahead of printers, A sixteen-year-old negro boy in Chicago shot and wounded nine policemen during a battle of five hours last week before he was kill ed. It took 200 policemen with shotguns, pistols, tear bombs and machine guns before they co ld break into the building where lie tvas barricaded. This negro would have made a useful soldier in the late war had ho been old enough. We notice that the experiment with the prohibition lias already cost the nation $178,000,000 and deprived the government taxes of .$1,000,000,000 a year. Yet liquor making and drinking continues. The Albany Herald, a prohibition paper, says: ‘‘One of the worst, if not the very worst, of the bad features of prohibition law viola tions in the country is juvinile drinking. The ability of boys and girls to get liquor is deplorable, for it inevitably spells ruin for many of them. At Colorado Col lege, located at Colorado Springs, the college authorities have for bidden “all formal social events” because so many of the students have been guilty of “outrageous conduct” inspired by free drink ing. The college paper is quoted as saving: “The question of drinking at college functions was brought before the eyes of the school rather forcibly at the recent homecoming celebration. The at mosphere was redolent with fumes of corn whisky and synthetic gin,” Mr. Tinkers is a great lover of children and to see them happy, who made a move this week for all children of Dahlonega to be given free transportation to see Santa Claus at Gainesville, the beautiful electric lighted sidewalks of the city and the moving train. Col. West with College bus and others with cars joined him. Seveutv-two children accepted and all had a most delightful time. Upon their return Mr. Tinkers bad candy for !i and every one. llis kindness will never be forgotten by the hi. No doubt from what we learn a girl was murdered near Griti- dle’s Shoals, on the Cheslatee Riv er in the upper section of pur county, Inst Sunday just about dark. A short while before n man and girl were seen passing down towards tho river. Very soon af terwards Mr. Mason who lives on this side, heard a girl screafiling, “don’t kill me, don’t kill me!” Mr. Mason ran down to where the ear was stopped, when the un known man tainting by the auto pulled out his pistol, pointed it’at Mason saying, “dr 11 you go back/’ ,wlio did so and in looking back saw the stranger raise his hand and heard him command the girl, “d—n you, get back in that car!” She was standing behind the car, who was also unknown to Mr. Mason. After tho one compelled to leave arrived at or near home he heard three pistol shots down tlpit way. I11 a short while the stranger passed back. No one was seen in the car with him. The Sheriff be peacable and quiet during the holidays. We are sorry to say but few of the school children take the inter est in their studies pupils used to. There are toe many plays to at tract their attention. There was a big crowd at the Striuger land sale in the eastern part of the county last week. Mr. Henley Wimpy bid the farm off at §2,650 for Mr. Stringer as it was not bringing enough toj suit the owner, llndjsomo rain/ast"! week blit it was light. The farmers have cer tainly had a nice time for turning their land. All who do this will have it ready for planting in case we haveVwet spring like last, de laying all farm work. The Bank of Dahlonega having been the City Depository for the past twelve months, next year the Bank of Bumpkin County will keep the City’s money. This agreement of taking it year about was entered into the first meeting of the City Council in January. This is the last issue of the Nug get for the year I923 on ac- ocount ot Christmas coming next week. The patronage of the pa per has been very liberal this year for which we return our most sin cere thanks. So wishing yon the compliments of the season we will take a back scat for a few days. We do not suppose there is a more modest newspaper man to be found than the editor of the Nug get. Since the ladies have got to wearing short dresses, and the high up athletic suits for girls have been introduced we take off our specks and put them in the’case before starting out in town. We were so when in our teens. Can prove this by our friend, Ool. R. H. Baker, who was with us at Ce dar Mountain Canip Ground and went into an old sisters tent to get a drink of fresh water when the old lady told her little grand child to “kiss the gentlemen.” We ran out at the door without our thirst being quenched or kissing the ba by either. A stranger visited our office last week who said he was an evange list from Florida, who we have learned since is n Pentecost minis ter. It is a long ways for any one to come to preach. The last Pen tecost evaugelist visiting Dihlone- ga created a lot of bell and no good. And we have had other traveling ministers of different de nominations, and but few of them did 16 cents worth of good. But on the other hand carried off mon ey the local preachers ought to have had. Now if a local preacher de sires help and thinks he can’t mas ter the duties and wishes a truiuer it’s his place to foot the bill. Just like anything else. It is our place to pay for what we get if wc get anything according to val ue. This used to be done. We remember forty or fifty years ago when a certain man, who had been occupying the pulpit for a long while went to move from Lump kin to another county, and at the last services held a good hearted official of the church arose and said : “This is the last time broth er — - will appear before you here. He is going to move away. He has been preaching for you i2 long months. Now whatever you think his services are worth come forward and lay the money down. When the nickles and coppers were counted up the amount was only 70 cents. It disgusted him so that he went away, began farming and soon had corn to sell because he understood farming better than lie did preaching, no doHbt the change was perfectly satisfactory to the Lord and the people too, because the ex-preacher could be of some benefit to himself as well as the couintryitoo. and at the same time be a Christian provided lie would give give good weight and meas- W.
