EAST INDIA FUNERAL PYRE
Immolation of Silent Figure While
Brother Looked on in
Bitter Grief.
» ,
Even as we came opposite the bear
ers lifted one of them, all cool and
dripping, from the river and set It.
the slim, small figure, so quiet, so
content, on a half-built pyre, C. F.
Benson writes in the Century. Brush
wood and fagots were built over it
and at the head and foot and sides
the fire was applied. A Brahman di
rected the rites and once, as the
flames mounted and aspired, the
brother, who was watching, clutched
at his heart as there appeared for a
moment at the top of the pyre a
girl’s face, with closed eyes and
mouth that seemed to smile; then the
radiant veil of flame shrouded it
again. The smo*ke rose in gray
whorls and streamers aga.inst the
stainless and tender blue of t.h6 sky,
and still the brother watched, quiet
again and composed; he had given
only that one sign to show that he
loved her whose ashes now lay among
the charred and smoldering logs. Or
rather it was only for the moment
that, thinking of days of childhood
and dawns by the riverside, he forgot
that it was not she who had been
consumed in the flames of the pyre.
Then he remembered again, and look
ing up from the pyre to the dazzling
river he saw there on our boat his
friend, the Brahman, and smiled to
him.

EARTH TREMORS FELT IN NEW
YORK, PENNSYLVANIA AND
OTHER STATES.
ONLY ONE MAN IS KILLED
Movement Was From Northwest to
Southeast, Converging to a Point
in the Atlantic.
New York.—An earthquake lasting
from fifteen to thirty seconds and dis
turbing particularly what are geolog
ically known as the Devonian and
Silurian sections of the northeastern
parts of the United States, took place.
It was especially severe in the cen
tral and northern parts of New York
state. Virtually all of New York state,
including this city, felt the shock, and
New England generally, lower eastern
Canada and parts of New- Jersey and
eastern Pennsylvania were shaken.
Tremors were recorded as far south
as Washington .and as far west as St.
Louis.
At Albany the shock was severe
enough to shake pictures from the
walls of the capitol, and at Bing
hamptcn a laborer was killed by the
caving in a trench in which lie was
working. At Fort Plain the heavy
doors ol ‘a bank vault shook under the
influence cf the quake and from oth
er parts of the state the falling of
chimneys, swaying of houses and de
struction of fragile objects was re
ported.
In New YoTk City the preliminary
tremor was felt at 1:35:15. At 1:35:45
the shock had reached its maximum
intensity and at 1:37:30 the move
ment subsided altogether, making the
total duration of the quake two and
one-quarter minutes, as given by the
seismograph. The period in which the
shock was perceptible by man was
from ten to thirty seconds and started
in a majority of cases about 1:35.
So far as known the movement was
from northwest to southeast with the
boundary lines cf the territory affect
ed converging to a point in the At
lantic.
BLACKS FOR AFRICAN UTOPIA
Scores cf Negroes Ready to Sail for
Dark Continent.
New York. —A ship load of negroes,
mostly farmers and their wives from
Oklahoma, waited here for Alfred C.
Sam to lead them to a negro
Utopia on the gold coast of Africa.
The negro farmers were induced to
come here, they said, by Sam, who
had been collecting colonizers from
Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi.
More negroes w T ere expected from
Galveston and the west, and it was
said that eighty-six were coming from
Boston.
The steamer in which the negroes
expected to seek the gold coast was
the old Curitvba, of the Munson line,
which formerly plied between New
York and Cuba. An officer of the
Munson line said that Curityba was
sold a short time ago to the Akim
Trading company of this city, in which
Sam is supposed to be interested.
Sam, according to the colonists, rep
resents himself to be an African chief.
Reports of his activities have come
from time to time from the South and
Southwest ‘ and New York negroes
were greatly stirred up today by con
flicting reports regarding his project.
Weleetka, Okla. —Between five hun
dred and seven hundred negroes from
various pans of Oklahoma are gather
ed here, the headquarters of Chief
Sam’s African colony. News that Sam
could net be found in New York cre
ated consternation among the colo
nisls. Last week they were told to
report at Galveston, Texas, on Feb
ruary 15 and prepare to sail for the
gold cca t five days later. They were
advised later to postpone their plans,
as the ship would not reach Galveston
for three weeks.
Butcher Taken by Villa's Forces.
El Faso, Texas.—A dispatch from
Ournbre carries the report that Maxi
mo Castillo, the bandit held responsi
ble ior the Cumbre tunnel horror, and
the remainder of his band have been
captured. The capture is said to have
been made at Gabaiin ranch, a few
miles east of Pearson. The report
adds that the prisoner will be taken
to Casas Grandes and executed.
Mobs Attack Jap Parliament.
Tokio, Japan —The Japanese house
(:i parliament was attacked b\ a mob.
It was driven back by the police only
after 'iie entrance gates had been
broken down and scores of people
injured. The rioting followed a big
mass meeting at which resolutions
were passed to impeach the • ab’net
for its attitude in connection with tne
graft charges against naval officers,
several of whom are accused of re
ceiving commissions for influencing
the allotment of admiralty contracts
in favor of a German firm.
Caught in Tower of Windmill.
Harmony, Maine.—Confined in a
tower of a windmill while The whirl
ing sails cut off his only means of
egress, Edwin Pike, a farmer, was de
prived of food and water for three
days and nights. Several tyre, of
wind mills having faded to give hint

BIG EATERS HAVE BAD
KIDNEYS AND BACKACHE
Take a Glass of Salts at Onco If Your
Back Is Hurting or Kidneys and
Bladder Trouble You.
The American men and women must
guard constantly against Kidney trou
ble, because we eat too much and all
our food is rich. Our blood is filled
with uric acid which the kidneys
strive to filter out, they weaken from
overwork, become sluggish; the elimi
native tissues clog and the result Is
kidney trouble, bladder weakness and
a general decline in health.
When your kidneys feel like lumps
of lead; your back hurts or the urine
is cloudy, full of sediment or you are
obliged to seek relief two or three
times during the night; if you suffer
with sick headache or dizzy, nervous
spells, acid stomach, or you have rheu
matism when the weather is bad. get
from your pharmacist about four
ounces of Jad Salts; take a table
spoonful in a glass of water before
breakfast for a few- days and your kid
neys will then act fine. This famous
salts is made from the acid of grapes
and lemon juice, combined with lithia,
and has been used for generations to
flush and stimulate clogged kidneys;
to neutralize the acids in the urine so
it no longer is a source of irritation,
thus ending bladder disorders.
Jad Salts is inexpensive; cannot in
jure, makes a delightful effervescent
lithia-water beverage, and belongs in
every home, because nobody can make
a mistake by having a good kidney
flushing any time.—Adv.
