TOURIST RETURNED
TIRED BUT HAPPY
Party Which Made ’Round the State
Trip Was Royally Entertained
All Along the Route
COFFEE COUNTY ADVERTISED
The three weeks work put in by Sec
retary Smith, of the Chamber of Com
merce, in planning the round the tates
tour put Douglas and Coffee County on
the map in such a way that many
years will elapse before it is forgotten.
The party got away on fairly good
schedule going to Ocilla, where a
short stop was made. They arrived at
Vienna about 1:30 in the afternoon,
where a barbecue was served and in
formal speeches made by citizens of
the town, which were replied to by
Messrs, McDonald, Overman and Smith
The barbecue was served by the lad
ies of Vienna at the expense of the
city.
Road conditions here made a
change of route necessary, the party
going to Perry w here a short stop was
made. A round of drinks and cigars
were given by the citizens of that en
terprising little city. They w r ere in
vited out to the peach farm of Mr. J.
A. Davis where the rst peaches were
sighted.
The spread made by the Miami Fruit
company at the packing house near
Fort Valley will doubtless be remem
bered by every member of the party.
The party then made Macon for the
night where accommodations awaited
them at the hotel Dempsey. A most
royal welcome was given the party by
that hotel and nothing was left un
done to make the stay there a pleas
ant one by the management of the hos
telry.
Mr. Chas. G. Day, assistant mana
ger of the Ansley hotel, of Atlanta,
was there to insist upon the party stop
ping with him while in Atlanta. After
much argument pro and con the party
decided to accept the hospitality of Mr.
Day and he joined them on the tour
going to Forsyth where a most mag
nificent time was given the tourists for
about an hour.
Barnesville was the next stop of an
hour and thirty minutes. The Gordon
college was one of the points of inter
est at that town. A great many of
the party going there while quite a
few- insepeted the different buggy man
ufacturing plants and other places of
interest.
Leaving Barnesville Secretary Smith
wired the secretary of the Board of
Trade of Griffin and a delegation met
our party five miles outside the city of
Griffin and escorted them to town. A
stop of thirty minutes only was made
at Griffin, although a day could have
been put in quite nicely as there were
twenty-seven mills working up cotton
into everything from a towel to a back
band.
From Griffin the party went direct
to Atlanta for the remainder of the af
ternoon and night, stopping at the Ans
ley hotel with Mr. Day. It is indeed
quite a task to try to describe the re
ception given the party by this beau
tiful hotel. The management left ab
solutely nothing undone for the com
fort of the party. Mr. Day entertain
ed Secretary Smith, Mr. Baker and
family at dinner.
The party left Atlanta going to Law
renceville and Winder, where they
were entertained. The demonstrotion
at Winder was one of the features of
the trip, if it is possible to single out
any particular place.
The run from Winder to Athens was
another feature of the trip; the route
was through the most magnificent
scenery of the trip.
The Chamber of Commerce at Ath
ens left nothing undone to make our
stay a pleasant one and we left them
with much regret after a tour of the
city and State Agricultural School.
