“THE BELGIAN."
“The Belgian” is one of the most
remarkable pictures ever offered to
the publiff.
First.—Because it has as its back
ground the most pitiful tragedy in the
history of the world—the ravaging of
Belgium.
Second.—Because there is portray
ed vividly against this background a
tender and intensely human love story
Third.—Because the cast of this
picture contains the names of such
splendid artists as Walker Whitesides
and Valentine Grant, to say nothing
of a host of others. No such galaxy
of screen talent has ever been assem
bled in th creation of a photoplay.
Fourth.—Because the author of the
picture, Frederick Arnold Kummer,
and its director, Sidney Olcott, two
men pre eminent in their respective
f rts, have collaborated to bring about
that rare combination of author and
director, a result that sounds a new
note in the history of the screen.
The United States Exhibitors’ Book
ing Corporation believes this produc
tion in its conception no less than in
its intricate detail to be the best that
has been offered the theater going
public in months. This wonderful
picture will be shown at the PALACE
THEATRE Thursday the 26th. First
show beginning at 4 P. M. Admiss
ion 15c and 35c.
INSPIRED NOT TO
REGISTER HE SAYS
VALDOSTA, GA.—“I was inspired
not to register and you can take me
out and shoot, put me in jail, do any
thing you please, but I shall never
register, declared Wesley Ricketson,
of Coffee county, when he was ar
raigned before United States Com
missioner O. W. Franklin yesterday,
charged with having failed to regis
ter.
Beyond declaring that he was “in
spired” not to register, he refused to
give any other reason, and owing to
the position he took and his declara
tion that he would not register-, Com
missioner Franklin decided to hold
him for the federal court. His bond
was placed at three thousand dollars,
which he ljas failed to arrange. He
is 36 years, of age.
*
2580 MEN REGISTER,
On last Thursday 2580 men between
the ages of 18 and 45 registered in
Coffee County. The Government esti
mated that over three thousand would
register but for some reason the fig
i
ures did not come up to their expecta
tions. Those between 19 and 36 will
be the first called to service.
Twenty-nine negroes will be called
by the local board tto entrain for
Camp Gordon about the 28th.
A thief broke into Max Canter’s
store the first of the week and took
away the cash register. Only a small
amount of money had been left in
the machine.
A brick was thrown thru one of the
show windows of Durst’s store Sat
urday nigt. This the second time this
window has been broken during the
past two weeks.
A letter from B. T. Rushing states
that he is getting along nicely in the

CARDOFTHANKS,
Through this channel I desire to
thank my friends who so faithfully
assisted and supported me in my re
cent race for Representative of Cof
fee County. I went up against a com
bination of circumstances over which
I had no control and I therefore, the
more appreciate those true and loyal
supporters who stood by me. Be
lieving the office to which I aspired
was of such importance to the people
of the County as to entitle all voters
to a free and honest expression of
their wishes, I had blindly hoped that
the race would be conducted without
the demoralizing influences of money
and whiskey, and I now look forward
to another day when these hopes may
be realized. Again assuring all of
my appreciation of your support, I re
maih, loyally yours,
D. H. MEEKS.

Judge W. C. Lankford, who on last
week was nominated to Congress from
the Eleventh Congressional District to
succeed Congressman J. R. Walker,
has given out the information that at
the proper time he will name Attor

upon him. Mr. Grantham is a son of
Mr. John Grantham, one of the best
farmers in Coffee County. The ap

Georgia Normal Colleg and Business
Institute of Douglas, and while he
was under Profs. W. A. Little and A.
A. Kuhl, they instilled into him the
splendid traits, of manhood he now
possesses. Mr. Grantham for the
past several years has been teaching,
having been the principal of the Ha
hira High School and of the Nash
ville High School. He read law while
teaching and last June was admitted
to the bar and since that time he has

with* the political situation of the
Eleventh District.
