MORE BOLL WEEVILS
By A. S. Bussey, County Agent.
More boll weevils went into winter
quarters last winter than ever since
the boll weevil has been with us. On
top of that, we had a very mild win
ter, one that offered practically no
hardships to the weevil. Consequent
ly, practically all the weevils that
went into the winter came through
and are all ready to start work. All
indications are that with a normal
season we will have a greater number
of weevils to contend with this year
ban ever before.
There are just two things that will
keep the damage of the weevils to a
minimum, namely, dry weather and

poison. Last year we had a very dry
year, an ideal cotton year arid we
won’t probably have another one
like it in another 25 years. It was
not necessary to poison heavily
year, probably two or three early
poisoning sufficing for the season.
Consequently, a lot of our farmers
are saying that poisoning is .not
necessary to make cotton, but that
dry weather is the controlling factor.
This is true to a certain extent,
though poisoning is a large factor.
In a normal season, the boll weevil
will do considerable damage unless
he is checked. This checking must
come about through poisoning.
