CARS CAUSE DEATH OF TWO
EVERY HOUR IN DAY. IT.l T .
S. LEADS THE WORLD.
Death? caused by automobile acci
dents in the United States leads the
world. There are 14.8 fatalities for
every 100,000 opopulation against
5.2 in England and Wales, 4.3 in
Scotland, 4.6 in New Zealand and 3.6
in Canada during the year 1923.
In 1924 figures show that for 158
American cities the automobile acci
dent death rate was 19.4 per 100,-
000 population, causing not less than
17,400 deaths in automobile accidnets.
The above does not involve railroad
trains, or three cars and automobiles
when they chance to meet.
The toll of all human life taken by
motor vehicles last year in this coun
try was at the rate of more than two
for every hour in the day. The
National Safety council has compiled
these statistics for the consideration
of the fourteenth annual congress
which opened last monday, September
28th.

LET’S TRY DESTROYING
COTTON STALKS THIS FALL
There are many people who will
hold to the theory that cotton can be
made if the weather is right under
all circumstances. Every authority
in the country knows that to destroy
the stalks in early fall, and to poison,
even in the dryest of seasons is an
aid to production of heavier crops..
Let whole communities, and coun
ties destroy the stalks this fall and
as surely as there are boll weevils,
they will be to a very great extent
exterminated, thus gaining an advan
tage over them in the spring. A
dozen weevils cannot propagate as
rapidly as a hundred, and the fewer
that are left to start the fight in
the spring, the longer one has to ma
ture cotton.
TO\l HARDWICK EDITS PAPER
The Georgia Free Lance is the
latest newspaper to make its appear
ance in the State of Georgia, accord
ing to our latest information. The
paper is owned and edited by Thomas
W. Hardwick, former governor and
COFFEE COUNTY PROGRESS
United States senator. It will be
published at Dublin, Ga., and will be
as independent as Andy Gump was in
his presidential campaign. “Wears
no man’s collar.”
Mr. Hardwick says as much by
stating in a front page editorial that
the paper will he independent in
speech and thought. The sum and
substance of it all is that it will be
a clarion call back to the democracy
of our fathers—the democracy of
Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jack
son. The comment in the first issue
on State politics and things pertain
ing to politics show an independent
spirit.
Fall has arrived, many weeds and
grasses have already gone to seel,
and the dog-fennels and other bother
some weeds will also soon go to seed.
By cutting the weeds year after year
before they mature means num
ber of them will diminish.
A lane looks much better when the
weeds are not thriving in it. A street
looks much better when no weeds
grow in it to make a place for mos
quitoes to shelter during the day.
Even the vacant lots in a town or
city do not look well when weeds and
tell gras- are there to**friar their
beauty.
It would only cost a farmer very
little to mow his lanes. It would
not cost a town or a small city but
very little to have its vacant lots
and unpaved streets mowed. How
much beauty it would add to a city
to have the work done twice a year!
Tourists speak well of the country
home or city where there ere no
thriving weeds. Like the man who
thinks more of himself after he gets
a shave, just so the people of our
county and town would think more
of themselves if the weeds were cut.
Not only entertaining but educa
tional. A gorgeous spectacle of the
Revolution is “JANICE MEREDITH”
at the Rivoli next Monday and Tues
day, containing America’s favorite
love story. adv
“Dutch” Anderson seen in Tennes
see, says a late headline. What we
would like to see is “Dutch” Ander
son captured in Tennessee.
