. ^p-ojenteil in the article in the Telegraph,"’ lhat *‘thcre is a party opposed to the wnigs nnd that tie name of that party is “lory ! !o r v ! 1 tory '• ! !’’ 1 should have been better pleased had gentlemen quoted us a linje more correctly before they proceeded. Perhaps, limrever. nfore of them may not have seen whai *e really did say. If s>, 1 will now tell them. AVe stated in our certificate, that -Mr. Poo s; jJ that; “there wc.s a party opposed to the whigs then, and there is a party opposed to the whigsuWfc Oort any of you tells its name ?— (after a pause) every school boy can, they have it in their books, tory, tory, tory !” Not withstanding a gentleman would stvear to the name without 'the possibility of mistake.' yet we belifcve tind think we are distinct in our re collection that the above statement is emplia'i- ca jly correct. 1 trust no one will coup rid that jn the above statement, we intended to convey the idea that we understood Mr, Poe to mean that the present democratic party were called tones. Not so. But that it was their rightful name—they should bo called the tory p my.— For he insisted they advocated the same prin ciples advocated by the tory party in the days of the revolution. The idea seemed to be that tory was the name r.ntagonfiical to whig; as school boys could tell who had it, in their books. Now every body knows that school boys have not got it in their books, that the present dem ocratic party is called tories. The idea is alt sur>l, perfectly ridiculous. The truth is, Mr. I poe intended to brand the democratic party | with tory principles, and after he hid dispos- I jessed us of democratic, the naino which we bear and which has been transmitted to us by the illustrious Jefferson—I ask you whigs wh it name did he leave us but tory ? He emphnti- ca'ly stated that the name democrat was a mis nomer—what name I say did he leave us ?— — The answer is upon your lips—tory 1 tory ! ! —t! at term of reproach and scandal—a term tvlii.h implied disaffection to the constitution and to our republican government. I burl it b.ick in his teeth, the charge is upon him soon er than upon us. Again, the certificate tells us that “what Mr. Poe did say was this.—Hu- said there was a whig party in the revolution. IVliat were they in favor of ? The people.— there wns a party opposed to them. What was their name? Tory! What were they in fiver of ? The. King.” It also s’ates, “this was the extent of hi* language. 1 ' And was this, crntlernen you whose nignalures are ap pended to this certificate the extent of his Ian gva^el Did he say nothing more? Have noic of you ever admitted that he called the democratic leaders tories ? . Have nOne of you ever admitted this wns the inference.? Tlrnk [a few minutes. If you have "and told tie- truth, [ini you give the*exteht of his language?— Look at the inconsistency in which you have involved yourselves. They further tell us that earmg his (M r. Poe’s) language blight bemis- prcsenti-d and perverted; be expressly dis horned applying tiio word tory to the Demo cratic party.” If gei-Pemen he only stated what you have sta'vd in your certificate—if this lie the extent of his language, I ask you, if a rational mind could have entertained fears efils being either misrepresented or perverted, k’otthl Mr. Poe, you admit he is smart, could i: have entertai- ed iliese fears ? Put the ques tion to your own consciences, and answer it uot as partisans, betas men of common sense. No g,-nt emeu, this was not toe extent of his lingua"*?.'
