Tribute to Gen. Jackson.
On the lltli of August, the news of the death
of the illustrious hero was received at Porto
Grande and in obedience to the general or
der the U. S. Ship Jamestown, Commodore
Skinner, fired a salute of 21 guns. The Got.
ernor of the Island of St. Vincent, on learning
the cause, ordered 31 guns to be fired at nuon
from the fort of Porto Grande, and the Portu
guese colors were at half mast during the week
following in honor of tlie departed hero.
(f/^The degree of L. L. D. has been con-

HicSssor, “we desire for him and his, all the
fuccess which must sooner or later attend on
the worthy son of a noble sire.
The friends of Mr. ©nllionn.
We transfer to our columns the following
jtmarks and extract from the Washington
I’nion of the 5tli inst:
•»Wc dislike to designate any portion of
tho great republican party by the name of any
maoi however distinguished; but we scarcely S3 ^ 8
know in what oilier way to use the information
which we wish to give to our reader-’, without
a :mc such specification. With this remark,
wc lay before our readers the following extract
of a letter, which we received this morning
from a gentleman in Virginia, one of the strong
er and most eloquent of the champions who
ratcreJ the field during tho last eventful cam*
pifgn. Wc da^o not add the kind compli
ment* which he pays to tho “Union”—the
more valuable to us, because he tolls us, frank
ly, that when wc came to Washington, he
'•doubted and feared for our success.”
“The friends of Mr. Calhoun in this part of
Virginia (and they are very numerous) approve
the conduct of the administration and its pur
poses, as understood by them.; and of course
strongly, and witnout exception, condemn the
Course of tho Charleston Mercury. They do
nut hold Mr. Calhoun responsible for it, in
the slightest degree. Indeed, I am fully satis
fied lie has no connexion with H; for, on the
8 th of March last, in a conversation he express
ed his confidence in the a Iministration—his bv-
lief that it would he governed by sound, en
lightened, and satisfactory principles; that he
Iiipsd his friends would at once lake a friendly
relation to it, and give to it a .cheerful and hear,
ty support; ilia*., as to him«ell, personally, ho
«liou!d leave Washington perfectly satisfied ;
ani lie added, that lie gave niethe.se views and
Jhtenieot, that his friends in Virginia might
know them. This, known to me, is conelu-
sire, in iny mind, that Mr. C. disapproves the
con fuel of the Char test oil Marcury. Nay, I
shouIJ be deeply mortified to believe oihcr-
wUe; far it is difficult for mu to imagin'* evpu,
how any patriot can disapprove its public ac-
of Jefferson College, Virginia.
07“The Roman Ca liolic Church has built
and consecrated over tliiity new churches in
the United States within the year. The num
ber of missionaries received from abroad during
the same period is estimated at one hundred
and twelve.
The Decatur Watchman of the 9th Inst.
The Hon. Joiix C. Calhoun, Lady and
Son, left this place on yestciflay morning for
Alabama. Ho arrived in our village on Tues
day evening, and remained one night only.—
lie was visited and welcomed by’ many of our
citizens with a most cordial greeting. We are
proud of his vi.-it to this place, and like him
tho more from a personal acquaintance, and
feel a desire, that at no distant day, his country
should award his merits with that place of
honor his distinguished superiority so richly
deserves. Mis appearance denotes tint lie has
fi ie health, and pos-essed of a mind in the
manhood of i's strength.

STATE OF TRADE.
Matters in the various manufacturing districts have pro
ceeded satisfactorily. The favorable prospects of the har

are rather on the rite. Stocks at b-»rh Leeds and Hudders
field are low. The tnirkel at Bradford is in a flourishing
condition. For all worsted fabrics there is a good demand.
Merinos find a ready -«»)e at firmly supported prices; there
L also a good demand for Yarns. In die Rochdale Flannel
market there is much animation; a brisk demand is experi
enced for pieces, and prices, although not changed, been ve
ry M«*adily maintained. At Bolton every branch of indus
try is brisk; counterpanes meet a ready sale, whilst yarns
are muck inquired Both the printers and bleachers
