moreover, is not attainable by any but such as
visit the Islands, furthey would not stand « voy

in ecsiacies nt the night; who ever saw such

what strange forms I see. The tall dnrlj pa

they are excessive in all tliingg, trme children
of the sun, by birth mid in character, they spem

Conversation; and therefore without descending
}oany mure minute particulars, and plumipg
myselfupon my personal immunity from such
violations on the score ofhaving no house, I
agree at once that a house breaker is a detesta
ble character, and worthy of condemnation. A
murderer, altjo, I am not prepared to vindicate.
A knife forced into the stomach nf an elderly
gentleman in a half sleepy stqte after a hi ttle o,f
old poit—a razor dra^n across a beautiful baf-
nyiids throat—or a bullet scientifically inserted
through the eai-hole of a deaf old lady engag-
ecj secieiing her half-year’^ dividend in a black
trunk in the garret—ure disagreeable objects
of contemplation to the phjlunirop/c mind; and
therefore 1 at once coincide in the fervent e.ye-
crqtton in which a murderer js held by every
person I have conversed with on the subjepf.
except the students of anatomy, and twq or
three popular authors ofthe conclusive school.
But there is another miscreant for wliopi I
have no commiseration; a wretch, compared
re-
ry day hc died. After l had
seen him safe deposited under the green turf, I
came home all'in tears and distress, and went
up into my bedroom, which was in the back
part of the house, to meditut? yppn him ; and
there I sot, and sot, and sot; but 1 could’nt
meditate a bit; for evety time 1 tried to think,
the little devils in the next yard made such tt
noise it dnv every th^ng plean out of my lteud.’’ \

“THE RAGING CANAWL.”
It is a question which affords room for pro

er found poets and romancers tq record their
fame." The Erie canal, continues ihe Sym

yet no Coleridge has written out his ‘rln me ;’ ,
many a long Tom Coffin, and vet no Cooper
has been his pilot on the ocean of fame. But

EASTERN CHAIN OF THE ROCKY
MOUNTAINS.
The entire region in the vicinityof the first
eastern chain of the Rocky tMountuins, (says
father De Smet in one of his interesting let
ters.) serving as their base for thirty or sixt v
miles, is extremely fertile, abounding in for.
esls, plains, prairies, lakes, streams, and miner
al springs. The fivers and streams are innu
merable, and on eyery side offers situations fa
vorable for the construction of mill*. The
northern and southern branches of Sascat
shuwin water, the cjistricl I haye traversed, for
a distance of about thtee hundred miles. For-
ests of pine, cypress, thorn, poplar and aspen
trees, as well as others of different kinds, occu
py a large portion of it, covering the declivities
of the mountains and banks of the rivers.
These, ordinarily, take their rise in the
highest chains, whence they issue in every di
rection like su many veins. The beds and
sides of these rivers are usually pebbly, and
their conrsi s very rapid; but, as they recede
front Lite mountains, they widen, and their cur
rents lose something of their impetuosity.—
Their waters are usually very clear. In this
ciimate wens are not unfreqeent. The coun
try would be capable of supporting a large pop
ulaiinn, and the soil is favorable for the ptoduce
of barley, cqrn, potatoes, peas and beans,
which grow here a? well ag in the more south
ern countries.

doomed to remain forever inactive J No’so:

will give them value—a strong, active and en

pious void.
The wild beasts will, ere long, give place lo
our domestic animals: fl icks and beards will
graze in the beautiful meadows that border tbe
numberless mountains, hills, valleys, and plums,
of this extensive region. A large portion of
he surfqceof the country is covered with arti
ficial lakes, formed by the heavers. On our
way, we had frequently occasion to remark,
with wonder and admiration, the extent and
height of their ingeniously conslructed dams
and solid lodges. Tncse are remains of the
tdm'rable little republics, concerning which so
many woijders liavejustly been recorded. Not
more than half a century ago, such was the
number pf b: avers in this region, fhat a good

It has been the fortune of mnqy to travel on
the canal, when its calm waters s ept in tran
quility, and the soft breath of the summer air .
scarcely excited a ripple upon its bosom. .But
when Old Boreas has-awakened from its slum-
beys, and isstqlking furiously over its dangerous
depths, lasliitjff its waves to madness, throwing
qp huge billows upon its banks, and et)gu!phrng
every thing in its dangerous whirlpools, with
threatening waterspouts and roaring tornadoes,
at such a lime, we question whether many huvq
dared the dangers and perils of the “ Raging
Canawl.”
It was a calm night in June, when it wqs my
fortune to be travelling, with a goodlv nupiber
of passengers, upon that staunch and thorough
sea-boat, the “ Doijy Maria.’’ Naught was
heard to break the sj’encp save the sleeping
passengers in the cabiq, who seemed combined
to roll the deep elerna] base of N a Mir s!:i an :
them in one general snore, which shook tho
boat from stpin to sierp, qnd reverhepateij a]oi;g

The grin) sons of NflP^P® 'V’i]3 navigated
the b >at tyere dispersed about thp dpek of the
noble craftj and the skipper was pqcing by the
gangway, quietly smoking hia cigar. Sudden
ly he slopped short in his walk, and his eye
tested upon a small cloud which appeared in
the western horizon, and was growing blacker '
and larger every moment, and then his voipe
rung wi'.J] clear and startling tones—
“Every man to his post!’’
“Ay, ay," growled flip pld water dogs, who_
were soon ready for the approaching storm.
Shortly it burst upon us in all its violence.
“Hard pp your helm!”
“Ay, qy," growled the old muskrat in the.
stern, iipfl she rode the gale nobly; but sudden
ly a hpayy sea gqve her a “side winder,” which,

seemed to rise superior to the emergency.
The storm was now terrific, the waves run
ning mountain high, « ften rising to the veiy
summit of the tow-path, and it was soon seen
the Dolly Maria was no mutch for such a tem
pest, and was gradually drifting before tbo.
wind.
“Breakers abend !’’ shouted the ^)po;-blucl*.
♦‘Where away?"
“Overthe off cow-lock,” was answered.
The decisive moment had tiow come, and thp.
captain saw foal desperate measures alone
would avail, and throng!) the canal horn ghoul-

pipe, and get up more steam in the tea kettle^

But still the anchor dragged, the danger was
everv thfrtpenl becoming more iminiu'-nt, the
roar of the breakers was distinctly heard, aud
ord.-rs were given to light the skill.
“Disci urge ovei'b ‘iinl your tobacco quids,

was perceptibly hgljiem d, ihe anchor caught,

on our despairing souls.
But soon came the appalling cry, ! the he.-,;

Then all hope w as gone, on i a wild .sin ek rose
above tiie raging Storm, but anon wax i-caul foe
calm voice of the captain exh. rtmg us io be
