MEXICO.
The ‘Courierd«* Et na Unis,* of Tuesday,
gives ihe -uhstance of some private letters Irom
Mexico, received in New York. Twoof them
are said to be written by Genls.Santa Anna
,and Almonte, to a friend hi New York city.
The letter of the former bi arsda e at Ssn Lui*
Potosi, 24th November, anti llwt of Almonte at
Mexico, Nov. 29th. S.mia Anna, alter * x
pressing his confidence of tire ultimate success
of the Mexican arms, says that it is . his firm de
termination tu protract the war intetiniiiahly
and to death, sooner than to accept any but un
honorable peace.
The other letters, which are said to emanate
from persons well informed, though unconnect
ed with the Mexican administration, announce
that the Army of Santa Anna numbers between
twenty and thirty thousand men, of whom ten
thousand are excellent cavalry. The g o itest
harmony exists between the influential men of
the country. A reconcilliation has .taken pi >ce
between Santa Anna and ttejnn, whom Presi
dent Sales had compelled to resign his office.
Tn« majority of ihe Congress belong tu the
federative party, and Santa Anna persists in his
renunciation of the Presidency. General 41- n
monte is his favored candidate. Th** English 10 T c ’ , ’
Minister has withdrawn the offer of mediation “ w ’ pr ' llu ‘ J *'
lately made in the name of liis’governun nt.
This retraction is probably to lie attributed to
the reception which tlio offer encountered
some mouths since at Washington.
The clergy have refused to hypothecate the
church property as security for n loan of two
millions; and the gove-nment has resolved, it j
is said, to issue notes of 200 to 20,000 piastres,
based and secured ultinmtely upon the proper
ty of the clergy. Some Havana letter* state
that Santa Anna has threatened to abandon
M icon Volunteers, on the Hte inelancholly dis
peusation.
Resolved, That Lieut. Conner, Lieut. Biv
ills, and Lieut. B u. es, be a Cmumiitee to a-
dopi the proper arrangements fir the recepiiou
and disposition of the bod) until its final inter
ment.
Resolved, That Messrs. Powers, Logan,
Stubbv, Nisbet* Tyner, Scott, McLaughlin and
Bull*, be a general Committee of Arrange
ments, to preset ibe and arraHgo the funeral
ceremonies, m extend invitations, and to exer
cise a general superintendence.
The Committee then adjourned, subject lo
