Proposals,
TNOR Publishing in tbe citv of Pittsburgh, Penn.,
I’ a Weekly Paper to be cillcd THE CONFED
ERACY.—At the suggestion of many friends and
with tlie approbation of several distinguished gentle
men residing in different part* of tlie Union. We have
concluded to commence a Newspaper bearing the a-
hove title. Tho limits of a prospectus will not allow
us to go into a detailed statement of tbe various caus
es which have prompted ns to the undertaking. Suffi
cient fur our present purpose is it to state, that every
true friend to the perpetuation of the Union of the States
must fool deeply mortified to witness the systematic
attempts now unking to dissolve it—and cannot but
deplore tbe silence of the Northern pres*, generally,
upon the subjerl A crisis is at hand. Tho “Aboli
tionists,” “Liberty men” and advocate* of the “Wil-
tnot proviso” seeto * determined cither to force our
Foutnern brethren to succumb to their views, or, as the
alternative, sever the Union.
From the apathy manifested in tbe North, it is sup
posed by many that North of. Mason's and Dixoufe
line but one feeling exist* on rite subject; thougli this
is not so, still, our silence is well calculated to suit tlie
end* sought for by these demagogues. Wc are deter
mined, therefore, so far as we are personally concern
ed, to do our part toward* correcting the evil.
When the institutions of one aection of the Union
are branded r.i “infamous," “wicked,” and “deserviug
the curae of God"—particularly when those irutitu-
tiont were sanctioned or recognized by a Washiugton,
an Adams, a Jelferson, a Franklin, a Henry, and their
contemporaries of Revolutionaiy days, we think it high
time to raise a wanting voice and put an end to the
clamor. Is there more patriotism, more love of coon-
try, or a greater desire to see the present and future
generations happy, contented and free, actuating the
Abolitionists in their present attempt to stray one
portion of tlie Union against the other, than governed
the Heroes und Sages of ’76 ? Tho comparison is
odious.
We have said enough to enable tlie reader to under
stand ns, and we promise on our part, all of our time,
our talent and influence to make the "Citnfrderacy" al
useful, instructive aud invaluable family newspaper.
We mav add that we have engaged as rarrei
dents for tlie “Confederate'' several gentlemen
highest literary at'taimncnts. Were it politic or pru
dent. the names of gentlemen well known throughout
the Union, a* Statesmen and Patriots, aud who have
contributed towards the getting up of tho "Confedtra-
rv," might be given.
rywill those to whom this Prospectus is sent pro
cure us a few subscribers uni send on the names and
money. There is not a paper in the State possessing
the independence to oppose the present war upon our
Southern brethren aud their institutions, and anticipa
ting opposition of the most virulent aud personal char
acter, we cannot but hone that our distant lrivuda will
lend a helping hand. We have already a sufficient
guaranty to promise the continuance of tlie “Confedera
cy” for one ycarat least, atill, wc degjre a circulation,
as without It our object cannot be accomplished.

Griswold’s Improved Cotton Gins.
T HE subscriber will continue tlie manufacture of
GINS on his usual extensive scale, and embraces
this opportunity to thank his numerous customers, for
their liberal patronage heretofore. Thu estimation in
which his Gins nre held, mny be known from the fact,
of bis having sold more than’two thousand, within the
last three years, probably ten to one over any other
factor}’ in the State. This evidence of the superiority
ofhis Gina, may be accounted for by his being the first
to introduce the late improvements, and keeping the
lead by yearly adding now ones; bis first and second
improvements, made tlie quslitv of Cotton perfect,
though sonic were rather slow, "his third tnadg them
sufficiently fast.it then only remained, to make them
more durable and convenient, which has been done he
believes effectually, by several new improvements the
present year—besides, he has the exclusive right for
