Then;lil< on n Couutrjr Grare-Vord,
linger here. <> man of sorrow.
Torn not from this silent spot.
Linger in tho busy morrow,—
Beenes like this are soon forgot.
Sunbeams stealing out from heaven
Linger here on stone am) sod ;
Linger then from room till even—
Stay, fur than art near to God!
Here, araii) the silent forest,
OM and hoary trees all gray,
nest the richest with the poorest,
’Heath the lulled mound of clay.
Mortals vain, bereft of ladine,
Lie benoath this mnrhlc tomb.
There, the poor, onuntic’d fading,
Hestcth from his toil-doom.
Here, the weary broken-hearted
Find from nil their woes respite,
And the links of kindred parted.
Far away in heaven unite.
Kero the worldly and ambitiona.
Here the wise, the great, the good,
Mnn most virtuous or most vicious,
Servo alike the worm for fixnl. a
Hero, all enmity mnst perish
Fondly nurtured bv our pride;
Why should we such follies cherish,
ilcst wo not here side by side f
Lirserhere in thoughtful wonder.
See the busy world without
Passing heedless, boist'itmi. yonder,
Old and yomig in merry rout.
See. oh! see. how death is reaping
From the wild, unrni.xciooa crowd!
Laughter pealiuc, wailing, weeping—
13'eu the bridal rube's a shroud
Thus all earthly joys ceasing—
Can’st thou wander on with these 1
Slav and leant of life unecasiug
When our portioned time shall cease.
Know, all fleeting is. O mortal.
From the cradle rotha grave.
But religion—at whose portal
Breaks life's changing, troubled wave.
Elio, the one. the never changing,
Stays to guide thee mortal, where
Thousands o'er her psths once ranging,
Find a blissful home fore'er.

Reputation.
Ifyou have earned a gooj reputation by virfuons
nett and lioucst deeds, let that reputation be kept
bright. II you iie alill rjiou the strength of one or two
glorions achievements, \ dh will lose the honor you
have gained, and at last rust out. Poor is he who can
look back only on one bright spot in his career, while
darkness and indifference have settled like a thick
cloud upon his life. Let our achievements over pas
sion. pride and error, lend to other glorious accom
plishments. A really good man is never stationary.
The past is but an incentive to the future. He yet
hopes to win more Isnrels. and perform more glorious
deeds. How true ia the language of—we forget who
—but one who spoke the words of truth—
"The reputation
Of virtuous actions passed—if not kept np.
By an access and fresh supply supply of new ones,
For want of habitation nod repair.
Dissolves to heaps of rain "
. There arc thousand* who if they liad died in early
life, would have left behind them an unsullied reputa
tion and a glorious name. They had built the hope of
their rcuowu upon too feeble a foundation, or they
were carried away by nmhition and ruined. Had Ar
nold diet! before thfi surrender of Cornwallis, his name
would have shone brightly on the paces of liistorv.
IIsil Cromwell frtlleu bv the tine of John Hampden,
would not the bsro name send a thrill of pleasure
through the bosom t Though Cromwell erred through
ambition and rower, he was uot the worst tyrant who
sat upon England's throne.
Let your reputation l>e kept bright—lose not whst
you have gained by a single misdeed ; but persevere
in the path of virtue and honor.
Usrrixcss tw Ilicii.s,—It cannot he too early or
too deeply instilled into the minds of the yoong and
inexperienced, that the means and happiness of rich-
es are, ia a great decree, in every nun's power. A
blind belief in dcatiuv, nr fortuned act* ns a powerful
stimulus to indolence and indecision, and makes men
sit down and fold their bands in apathy. Nothing is
more common in the world than for people to exense
their own iudoleuce by referring the prosperity of
others to the caprice of fortune. S iircess. every ex
perienced roan knows, is ns generally s consequence
of industry snd good conduct, as disappointment is the
consequence of indolence sod indecision. The differ-
eace in the progress which rqeu make in life, who start
with Use same prospects and opportunities, is a proof
•has more depends upon conduct than fortuue; and if a
man. instead of envy ,ng his neighbor’s fortune, should
inquire what means lie has employed, nr these he lias
neglected, he would secure a resi.lt to his wishes.
But tho great misfortune is few have courage to un
dertake, and fewer have candor to execute, such a
system of sell examination. Thousands thus pass
through life angry with fate, when they ought to be
angry with themselves—too fond of the enjoyment
which riches procure ever to he bappv without them;
and too indolent and unsteady, ever to pnrsoe the le
gitimate means hy which they are attainable.
Tho Na;oefic Telegraph.
What if. - :u rue miles of gleaming wire
Stretched out afar n'erhiil and plain.
As if to atriug some massive lyre
lk» wring out earth's redeeming strain T
It ia a lyre, whose every string
Shall vibrate to the praise of man; *
Such tribute to his genius bring
As ne’er vras pain since Time began.
It is the master piece of Earth—
The climax ot ail human micht—
When man. forgetful of Ida birth,
Infringes ou Jxuovah’s right.
It i* the path where lightnings fly.
Obedient to Man's lordly will.
Who forced them from their native sky.
And chained them down on every bill.
Once they were messengers of God,
And flashed through Heaven’s remotest span;
But now they've left their high abode.
To herald oat the ways of Man. #
No more wo’ll trust the carrier dove.
Or iron steed, or lagging gale,
Bnt call the li .ditninga (rum above.
To spread the news and tell the tale.
They far out-speed the rolling Earth,
And put the car of Time aback—
Before the future has it* birth
'Tis past upon the spirit track.
The track—the great highway of Thought—
Where distant nations converse hold i
Ere word is said or deed is wrought,
'Tis past upon the track.
From Eaat Vo W cat—from pole to pole—
Wherever mau has pressed the sod—
The everv thought of every soul.
Is omnipresent like as God.
It binds tbe nations all in one.
And thrills its pulse throughout tbe union.
Till every kingdom, tribe aud ton-ue.
Shall live and act iu full commnuion.

of their character, which, if it were uot developed iu

Valdosta, Laurens Co., April 26, 1847.
Mr. James Vau Valkcuhorgh:
Dear Sir— I have tried your Fitzgerald Patent Mill
for grinding com, and have found it to ntiswer adnur-
ably. No planter that is not in the vicinity of 0 public
mill ought to he without one, if lie can sllbnl to pur
chase, and his family is sufficiently large to require
the use of it, otherwise. I would suggest that several
farmers of a neighborhood should unite to purchase
oue in commnn. which being established in a central
position, would be acrcssaldc to all.
Very Respectfully, yours,
r G. M. TROUP.
Dfmopolis, Ala. March 28, 1847.
Mr. James Van Vafkeuburph:
Dear Sir—Tout last, dated March 12th inat. came
duly to hand. I was then daily expecting the Mill,
but did not receive it until the 15th inst. Since then I
made a fair trial, and I need cot tell yon, that I found
it every thing yon recommended it to be.and more too.
I ground nearly all day, at the rate of seven bushels
per hour*of fine meal,’

Aleaky. Baker Co.. Ga. May 22, 1847.
Dear Sir—l have purchased one of your Fitzgerald
Patent Barr Stone Corn Mills, and am perfectly satis
fied that it would bo greatly to the interest of any
Planter who is not in the immediate vicinity of a good
pnblic mill, to purchase one, being aimplu in its con
struction, and durable in materia), and easily propell
ed by the same gear and power used in ginning cot
ton. Yours respectfully.

Twiggs County, May 17,1847.
Mr. Van Vnlkenbnrgh:
Sir—In answer to yours of the 14th inst-, I take
pleasure in stating that the Mill yon put up for me
performs admirably—I am better pleased than I ex
pected to be. I would not sell it for any price and be
obliged to do without one. 1 have ground in one day
with it with my gin gear forty bnshels of good meal,
and I advise every man that ia able, to purchase one.
