••Tlrr throe *wecte»t words in the English language
are Mother, Home und Heaven. - ’
Mo nre n—'
The first fond words our hearts express.
In childhood's rosy hours;
When life seems full of happiness,
As nature is of flowers i
A word that manhood loves to speak,
Wh.'ii time has placed upon his cheek.
And written on his bmw.
St mu lessons of the world’s untruth,
Unheeded in his thoughtless youth.
But sadly pondered now;
As time brings back, 'raid vanished years,
A mother's fondest hopes and fears.
Hosts—
The onlv'Etfen left ontoneb'd,
-Free from the tempter’saeure ;
A Paradise where kindred hearts *>
Muv live without a care;
A wife's glad amile is imaged here.
And eyes that never knew a tear,
Save those ofhappinesi.
Beam on the hearts that wander back
Prom off the lomr«end-boaten track
fit sonlid worldlines»,
To ask those purer joys that come
Like angels round the hearth at Home.
Hkavkx—
The end of all a mother’a pnvyara—
Tho Home of all her dreams;
The guiding star to light our path
With hope’s encheering beams—
The haven for onr atono-tossed bark.
From out a world where wild and dark
The tempests often rise—
But still in every darksome hour
This hope will riae with holy power
And point ua to the akies.
Where Mother, Home and Heaven are seen,
Without a cloud to intervene.

Children and An gets.—A Dream.
We remember a remarkablo dream which occurred
at a lime when a little being-came but to leave ua a-
gein, whom we bad hanlly thought couid have claim
ed a place in our heart, but for the void it left ; and it
always recurs to our mind when we hear of new life
and old death meeting thus instantly ua.the threah-
hcld.
We dreamt that we were conveyed byaome myate-
rious guide »the entranre of this earth. It was a
kind of gallery, through which angelic beings, winged
fix! beautiful,' were rapidly passing, all towards tbe
earth i-sorao with grave,others- with hopeful aspects,
their expressions ss various as they were legible.
"What docs this mean we said. “Who are the
passing spirits that pi all one way, and why aro their
countenances so various 1”
Onr companion replied:
“They are guardian angels, each oh his way to take

exposed to. Look at that angel," be said, “with
serious mein, as if a bard duty were before him ! His
charge is the child of the rich and noble of the land,
who will bring him up in pride and luxury • and his
heart will gross hard and salfish, and selfishness in
high places has few sorrows, and without sorrow the
voioa of bis good angel will hardly be beard.
“And see that spirit who passes with eager, hope
ful look ! .To him is committed the child of a vicious
fstber, who is rioting at this moment that a child is
born unto him. Bnt open vicssaroxot so baneful as
specious virtues. The child’s heart will be wounded
and bumbled to the sins of his father, and, in paying
the penalty of another's guilt, he will himself seek the
paths of virtue."
Then another spirit passed, with firm but peaceful
aspect.
“His charge will be-arduous. The child now bom
will bare wilful and tumultuous passions, and his heart
will be stubborn and perverse, and he will defy an-
- thority, and go far wrong. and tbe world brill say there
is no redemption for him, and even bis father's face
will be turned foam him. But, in the sileoce of s sick
chamber, a mother will plead incessantly for him, and
tbe child of many prayers shall yet be brought -home
to tbe fold."
Then came one with anxious mien, and be wai
guardian to a genius who would win the applause and
idolatry of tboasandag and a second with heavenly
compassion. beautiful and moving to. bebold, and be
was hurrying to tbe obscure offspring of sin and shame;
and a third, calm and peaceful, summoned to preside
over tbe even tenor ofa poor orphan, who inherited
the blessings of sainted parents; and a fourth, fall of
- solemn anxiety, who hastened to receive bis Charge
-from a royal cradle; and a fifth, whose countenance of
heavenly wee we dared not ask the cause of; and
many more, all going to their varied posts—to the
children of tbe good and bad, the high and the low.tbe
careless-add the unbelieving—till we were tired of
asking; when, suddenly, came one, distinguished from
all by the radiance of-joy upon-him.
"What it hit charge f” we said, "sorely itmust be
that of some future saint upon earth t"
“No,” said our conductor, “beds the angel of a child
-who has died at its birth, and is going to carry it
straight to heaven."
And then we awi-kc xnd-found-it was only a dream;
but cvereince then we have never heard of the derflli
of an infnnt without thinking of tbe joy onsbat angel's
- countenance.

BY MISS JAIVX t. BRCCE.
The gay are assembled in palace of light.
And courtiers surround their monarch so bright;
There’s a crown on her brow, the diamonds flash.
As bright as the sunbeams from Heaven that dash :
There’s a glow oa each cheek, therc’ajoyoneachlip;
- They sing and they dance, end tbe ruby wine sip—
The scene is bewitching! the Queen giidcth There,
Be bsppy and cheerful, unknowing of care;'
There's music end beauty, and mingling of mirth.
But it turns, in a wail that's echoed on earth.
' There’s a cry of despair that's borne on the breeze;
"f is wafted by pity across the far seas;
A nation of freemen beyond the dark wave
' Respond urliiocall of the famishing brave.
Tbe noblemen glide iniheir chariots by.
Unheeding the people that suffer and die;
And the lady that rules o’er that nation so bold
BtiU dwelletb in peace—still proudly and cold.
r)h!, England—there waves o’er thy rulers a curse,
-A* black as the plumes of s funeral hearse..
Pole Erin!—there’s gloom on thy beantiful brow;
Thy sans are all bending in agony low;
’Hie husband now weeps o’er his famishing bride,
And squalid young children that gather beside;
There’n-a wail on thy breeze that sighs o'er the dust
- Of one who hath perished for want of a crust.
Up. up. ye pale paapers! up from tbe wayside.
The nobleman's carriage will over yon ride—
And tho world will not heed the wrong hc bath done,
For he's on. aristocrat's privileged son.
Green Isle ! oh 1 green' Isle!—thou art lovely to view,
Bnt want throws a shade o’er thy heavens so blue ;
Thy people are starving—there’s dearth in the laud—
Awake from this torpor, and form an s Ixuid.
0.1 rest ye not now, while ruin and gloom
Are wrapping tbe land like a pall for the tomb;
And are ye not men, thus by tyrants opprert I
Ob I how can ye slumber!—oh! how can ye rest!—
While your wives and your children, in misery • sigh T
Then apaail to arms! nor thue-alavishly lie:
And defend ye your homes—for do you not know.
That he who’d be free roust-strike the first blow?
The Sandwich Iahra dcra nml the Sharks.
The grand recreation of t henatives is the constant-
habit of swimming. In fact, the Sandwich Islanders
are all but amphibious, and seem to he as much at
home in the water ss on the land ; and. at all times of
tha dsy, men, women and children are sport ing shoot
in the harbor, or even beyond the reef, with shoals of
sharks, perhaps, ns their playfellows. These vora
eieua creatures, however, arc |gr 1 ess likely tomeddie
with the aborigines than with foreigners, nottbat they
K fer white meat to brown, but because .they have
n taught by experience that one Hswoin has more
of tho Tartar in til-c than n score of-Europoans. There*
is scarcely an instance ou record in which a native lias
suffered any serious injury from a shark. If, at any
time, the iattcrAoke tlio preliminary step of turning
over on bis sido to get a mouthful, tho former is sure
at least to elude the attack by diving below the mon
ster ; while,if he has a knife or. similar weapon, he
seldom fails to destroy the cue my by carrying tho war
into his interior.
To return to the swimming; it was part of our daily
amusement to watch the rapid, and elegant evolution*
of the performers; more particularly of the ladies, who,
in the great majority of cases, excelled th-ir lords and
Masters ta agility nml science. Even' in-.point of
strength ar.d endurance OOe woman, a short time be
fore ouMRival, IihJ carried off* the palm from her hus j
hand. The whole .-..ary is well worth telling, as illus
trative of something licltcrthan toughness of muscle
or suppleness of limb. A man nml his wife, both Gfaria-
liaits, were passengers in a schooner, which founder
ed at aconstlierable distance from tho laud. All the
natives on board promptly took refuge in the sea; und
the man in question, who had jnat celebrated divine
service in the ill-fated vessel, called hit fellows, r-wne
of them teing converts as well as himself, around him
to offer tp another tribute of praise ami supplication
from the Jeep in which they were struggling, to tarty,
with a com' .matinn of copragt* -ends humility perhaps
unequalled in the world’s history, in onlertleRberatcly
to worship God in that universal temple under whose
restless pavement the spanker and most of Iris bear
ers-were destined to find their graves.
The man and his w[le.Uad each succeeded in pro
raring the support of a covered bucket hy way of buoy;
and away tin v struck with the rest for Kahoolawc,
finding themselves next morning alone in the ocean,

Mr. James Van Valkenbutgb: .
Rear Sir—I have tried your Fitzgerald Patent Mill
for grind ing corn, and have found it to answer admir
ably. No planter that is not in the vicinity-cf a public
mill ought to he without one. if he can .aftbnl'tu pur
chase, and bis family is sufficiently large to require
the useofit, otherwise. I would augget-t that several
farmers of a neighborhood should unite to purchase
one in common, which bring established iu a central

Mr. James Van Volkenburgb:
Dear Sir—Your last. dated'Marcli 12th inst. came
duly to hand. I was then daily expecting the Mill,
hat did not receive it until the 15th inst. Since then I
made a fair trial, and I need not tell you, that I found
it every thing you recommended it to be.and more too.
I ground nearly all day, ati-tbe rate of seven bushels
per bout*of fine meal.

Dear Sifi-1 have purchased one of your Fitzgerald
